LOS ANGELES : A truck crash that set 250 million bees free has sparked warnings in the western US, with police telling people to avoid swarms of the stinging insects.
The accident happened in Washington state in the far northwest of the country, when a semi-trailer carrying a load of hives overturned.
'250 million bees are now loose,' wrote Whatcom County Sheriff on its social media page.
'AVOID THE AREA due to the potential of bee escaping and swarming'.
Roads in the region, which nestles the border with Canada and is just 30 miles from Vancouver, have been closed as bee experts help with the clean-up.
While some beekeepers aim only to produce honey, many others rent out their hives to farmers who need the insects to pollinate their crops.

One or two drinks a day? Gallup poll finds most Americans believe even moderate alcohol use is harmful

WASHINGTON, Aug 17 — A narrow majority of Americans now believe even moderate consumption of alcohol negatively affects health, as US drinking levels continue to decline, according to a recent survey. Pollster Gallup found the number of Americans who said they drink alcohol to be at an all-time low since the poll was first conducted in 1939 — a few years after the United States ended its prohibition of alcohol. The survey found 54 per cent of Americans reported they drank alcohol either occasionally or regularly in 2025, down from at least 60 per cent recorded between 1997 and 2023. Those who did say they drank alcohol reported it was in smaller amounts, with the average number of drinks consumed in the last week being 2.8, 'the lowest figure Gallup has recorded since 1996,' the pollster said on its website. Attitudes toward alcohol, which Gallup has been tracking since 2001, saw the most significant difference in the poll published this week. The number of people who consider moderate consumption of alcohol — up to one or two drinks per day — to be bad for personal health rose to 53 per cent in 2025. For comparison, the figure was 27 per cent in the early 2000s. 'Americans' drinking habits are shifting amid the medical world's reappraisal of alcohol's health effects,' the pollster noted. In January, then-US surgeon general Vivek Murthy called for alcohol to be sold with a cancer warning label on its packaging. 'Alcohol is a well-established, preventable cause of cancer, responsible for about 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 cancer deaths annually in the United States,' he said in a statement. 'Yet the majority of Americans are unaware of this risk,' he added, underscoring the urgent need for public education. — AFP

Police nab four men after roadside riot in Jasin involving stick and wire

JASIN, Aug 16 — Police have arrested four men for allegedly rioting with a wooden stick and an industrial extension wire by the roadside of Jalan Jasin-Bemban here yesterday. Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said in the 9am incident, the suspects, aged between 20 and 57, were among seven men believed to be involved in the riot, following an accident involving three vehicles. 'Bemban police station received a call around 9am from a man reporting an accident along the road. The caller also mentioned seeing a man wielding a wooden stick. 'It is believed that the altercation involved seven men as well as an accident with three vehicles, namely a Volkswagen Passat and a Mitsubishi Triton belonging to the group, and a Toyota Vios owned by a member of the public,' he said in a statement yesterday. He said following the brawl, five suspects fled the scene in a dark silver Proton Exora with an unidentified registration number, leaving the Mitsubishi Triton abandoned at the roadside. Dzulkhairi said two suspects were arrested at the scene, while another two were detained later in the compound of the Jasin District Police Headquarters. Initial checks revealed that a 20-year-old suspect had four previous criminal records. However, all suspects tested negative for drugs. 'Further investigations are underway to track down the remaining three suspects. The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting in a public place,' he said. — Bernama
