Iconical and Sunday's Serenade lift Kiwi handler's spirits at city circuit as he battles for winners this term
Battling what he admits has been a 'tough old struggle' this season, a relieved Jamie Richards celebrated his first double in almost 12 months at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.
Languishing near the bottom of the trainers' championship this term, the Kiwi handler is hopeful his campaign will take a turn for the better after combining with champion jockey Zac Purton to win with Iconical and Sunday's Serenade.
'It's my first one of the year, I think,' said Richards, who moved to 15 wins after his first brace since May last year.
'It's been a pretty tough old struggle to be honest, but hopefully we can get things going again. It's not the sort of place you want to have a lean spell in, but we're working hard, made a few little changes and hopefully we can be strong towards the end of the season.'

Iconical broke through at start seven when astutely rated in front by Purton in the first section of the Class Four Thistle Handicap (1,650m).
Sent out a $10 chance with a Happy Valley fourth his best previous result, the Needs Further four-year-old was never headed when he accounted for Owners' Praise by a length and a half.
'He's one of those horses that always trials well but hasn't fronted up race day yet,' Richards said.
'Usually when that happens, it's just a matter of taking a few races to work it out. He got a lovely ride tonight from Zac, controlled it off the front and ran well.'
Sunday's Serenade helped clinch Richards' double when he made it two wins in a row with a barnstorming display in the Class Four The EWO Challenge Trophy (1,650m).
Relishing a strong speed set by Mighty Commander, Sunday's Serenade swooped from near last to salute as the $3.6 second favourite.
'He's done a good job his last couple of starts,' Richards said after the Ardrossan gelding beat Dragon Star by half a length.
'He was aided by a beautiful ride by Brenton [Avdulla] a month ago and then tonight the pace was on, which suited him to get over the top of them.
'[Sunday's Serenade and Iconical are] only young horses, so let's hope there's more in store.'
Purton, who lifted his seasonal tally to 92 wins, was impressed by Sunday's Serenade.
'I got a little bit further back than I thought I would be and, as it turned out, the pace was strong and it suited him and he came with a strong run,' Purton said.
'He's another one who's turned the corner. It's taken him a few runs, but he's going the right way now.'
Elsewhere on the Valley card, Andrea Atzeni continued his red-hot form with a treble aboard Ricky Yiu Poon-fai's Giant Leap, Mark Newnham-trained Crimson Flash and John Size's A Americ Te Specso.
'It's good going, we hit the ground running but I've had good support,' said Atzeni, who has ridden 17 winners since March 12.
'It's always nice to come racing with good chances and because I can ride light, it makes my job a little bit easier especially with horses like Crimson Flash, who was up in class with a light weight [118 pounds].'
Newnham chimed in with a brace after Fatal Blow also won the first section of the Class Four Dianthus Handicap (1,200m) under Luke Ferraris.
Meanwhile, 10 overseas jockeys have been granted permission by the Jockey Club to ride at the FWD Champions Day meeting on Sunday week.
James McDonald (Prognosis, Voyage Bubble and Lucky Sweynesse), Joao Moreira (Chancheng Glory and Satono Reve), Yuga Kawada (Liberty Island and Gaia Force), Christophe Soumillon (Goliath), Tom Marquand (Lake Forest), Craig Williams (Mr Brightside, Cap Ferrat and A Shin Fencer), Damian Lane (Tastiera and Danon McKinley), Tim Clark (Royal Patronage), Atsuya Nishimura (Lugal) and Adrie de Vries (Calif) will be in action at the showpiece meeting.

Derek Leung ‘chasing hard' as he looks to keep good times rolling on Voyage Samurai

Derek Leung Ka-chun hopes Voyage Samurai can overcome his wide draw as he bids for career win number six in the Class Two Cheung Sha Handicap (1,650m) at Happy Valley on Wednesday night. The 36-year-old has been on board for all five of Voyage Samurai's victories, most recently when the pair dominated from gate to wire to win a 1,600m Class Two at Sha Tin in April. As with most of Voyage Samurai's wins, Leung controlled the fractions to a tee before unleashing a powerful turn of foot from the Dissident galloper to fend off any late bursts from his rivals. Frankie Lor Fu-chuen's five-year-old will need to do it the hard way on his maiden Happy Valley run, drawing gate seven of nine, but Leung is confident of bouncing back from a below-par run at Sha Tin last time where he had excuses. Top win, Voyage Samurai! Derek Leung steers Frankie Lor's ultra-consistent charge to a fifth career win at Sha Tin... 👏#LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) April 6, 2025 'I think 1,800m probably stretched him a bit last time and he has a bad draw to overcome this time,' said Leung. 'He has trialled well though and has been performing well. 'His first run at the Valley won't be easy because of the draw but I hope he can win again. It won't be easy but he's consistent and not fully exposed yet.' Leung has several strong chances on the city circuit's Wednesday card, including Prestige Always in the Class Three Sheung Shui Handicap (1,650m). The Pierre Ng Pang-chi-trained four-year-old posted his best run since a win on seasonal reappearance when third over track and distance last time – his first attempt at the 1,650m trip. Prestige Always closes out the card at Sha Tin as the second leg of a Pierre Ng-@zpurton double after the victory of Fighting Machine! ✌️#LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) September 28, 2024 And in the concluding Class Three Cheung Sheung Handicap (1,200m), Leung rides Very Grateful for Cody Mo Wai-kit, who made a promising debut over course and distance last month. 'Prestige Good ran well last time over this course and distance but he also has a bad draw to overcome,' said Leung. 'Thankfully Very Grateful has drawn the inside barrier. His debut was very good and hopefully I can use the draw to get a good position. He will hopefully improve from his first start.' Leung sits on the 28-winner mark for the campaign and is eight behind Matthew Poon Ming-fai, who leads the way in the Tony Cruz Award standings for the leading home-grown rider. Jockey Derek Leung has enjoyed his trips to Happy Valley in recent weeks. He also sits three winners behind Matthew Chadwick in the race for second and with both of those riders suspended on Wednesday, Leung is not giving up hope of a late surge to overhaul them – no matter how tough the going is. 'I'm eight winners behind, but you never know – I'm chasing hard,' laughed Leung. 'I still have my eyes on the prize and with the great support of trainers and owners, I will just keep trying to ride as many winners as possible.' The city circuit has been a happy hunting ground for Leung recently, with the rider winning the Jockey Challenge at two of the past three meetings. Two meetings ago Leung rode a brilliant treble headlined by the last-gasp success of Gracious Express, while his prior Jockeys Challenge win saw him pinch the spoils despite not riding a winner.

Hong Lok Golf steps into the unknown: ‘If you never try, you never know'

Chris So-trained galloper's winning streak goes on the line at Happy Valley this Wednesday night Hong Lok Golf will put his winning streak on the line when he faces a tricky test on Happy Valley debut this Wednesday night. Victorious in five of six career starts – all at Sha Tin – including the past three on the bounce, Hong Lok Golf will step into unfamiliar territory for the Class Two Cheung Sha Handicap (1,650m). Fresh from a successful Sha Tin Sunday thanks to the victory of Perfectday, trainer Chris So Wai-yin is confident his stable star will take to the city circuit despite having never even trialled there. 'We didn't have too many options for him but owner [Jackie Wong See-sum] really wanted to race him again, so we picked Happy Valley,' said So. HONG LOK GOLF makes it five from six! 🔥 Chris So's rising star continues his red-hot form with a Class 2 win at Sha Tin under @HarryBentley_!# — Hong Kong Racing (@HongKong_Racing) May 4, 2025 'It seems like he will handle the track but we don't know yet – we have to take a chance. If you never try, you never know. 'I told the owner that many things are unknown but he said 'we have to try'. I think it might suit him.' So was thrilled to see Hong Lok Golf draw barrier four for his first appearance at the tight-turning Valley track, ensuring regular jockey Harry Bentley has options. 'It's a small field and having that good draw is most important. The horse is flexible – he can go in front or come from behind – and his form is still good,' said So of Hong Lok Golf, who coasted into second in a recent dirt trial. 'His trial was OK. It was just a soft trial and he looked good.' After Hong Lok Golf's most recent victory in a Class Two on May 4, So put May 31's Group Three Lion Rock Trophy (1,600m) on the table for his galloper. Four wins from five starts! 🤯 Hong Lok Golf just keeps getting better as Chris So lands a 400th Hong Kong win as a trainer... 👏 @HarryBentley_ #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) April 13, 2025 He eventually decided against throwing the son of Grunt in the deep end in a race won by Pray For Mir from 17lb out of the handicap. Cody Mo Wai-kit's charge, who Hong Lok Golf defeated in that Class Two in early May, was hit with a 21-point ratings hike for his troubles. Should Hong Lok Golf win again on Wednesday night and lift his rating well into the 90s, however, So will consider backing him up in the Group Three Premier Plate (1,800m) at Sha Tin on June 22. 'For the Group Three on the 31st, the handicap was no good for us. Cody's horse went up 21 points. That's no good – it's tough to win again,' said So. 'Maybe, we will see [whether we go to the Premier Plate] – let's see how he runs this week first. I want to give him a chance to run at Happy Valley and then we will see. 'I think the 1,650m is suitable for him now but eventually he may need further.' Hong Lok Golf is one of four runners for So at the fourth-last Valley meeting of the season. He also saddles up Young Striker, Our Lucky Glory and Know At Heart.

Britney Wong doubles up again at Sha Tin as Cheval Valiant leads them a merry dance

Britney Wong Po-ni landed consecutive Sha Tin doubles headlined by Cheval Valiant's all-the-way win in the Class Four Lai On Handicap (1,000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. The 26-year-old smashed out of the gates on the Charm Spirit galloper and never looked back, crossing over to the stands rail from gate nine and setting comfortable fractions on the front end. When the pair were faced by a myriad of challengers in the final 200m, Wong galvanised her willing partner and gamely fended off $57 roughie Straight To Glory and $6.8 second favourite Lahore by a neck. It was the second straight double for Wong and the fourth consecutive winning meeting for the 10lb apprentice, who was teaming up with the horse that provided her with her first Hong Kong win back in September. Britney Wong grabs a double! ✌️ Cheval Valiant was the apprentice's first winner in Hong Kong last year and today she's back aboard @DJWhyteTrainer's galloper successfully at Sha Tin... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 8, 2025 'He was my first win and I know him very well,' said Wong of the Douglas Whyte-trained Cheval Valiant. 'Thank you to Mr Whyte for putting me back on because I had to chase this ride, actually, and I'm happy that everything has gone well today and I have had another win. I'm very happy.' There was a huge sting in the tail post race, however, with Wong copping a three-day ban and HK$15,000 fine for careless riding in the early stages. Earlier, Wong got the card off to the perfect start in combination with Manfred Man Ka-leung for the second consecutive Sha Tin meeting when Ruby Sailing was another gate-to-wire winner in the Class Five Chak On Handicap (1,200m). Ruby Sailing is not for catching! 🔥 Apprentice Britney Wong drives the Starspangledbanner gelding to a first win for Manfred Man at Sha Tin... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 8, 2025 It was a maiden victory at the 20th attempt for the son of Starspangledbanner, who showed tremendous early speed to lead from gate eight and never looked in danger of being caught. Wong got serious at the 400m pole and the pair surged into an unassailable lead, winning by one and a quarter lengths from fast-finishing $2.4 favourite King Oberon. Elsewhere, French ace Antoine Hamelin notched another timely winner thanks to Sky Prophet's upset win at $19.2 in the Class Five Chung On Handicap (1,400m). The Casper Fownes-trained four-year-old was made to work hard to get to the lead from barrier 13, but once there Hamelin controlled the fractions to a tee. Sky Prophet won't quit! 💥 Tough first win for the Caspar Fownes trainee at Sha Tin with @AntoineHamelin as he narrowly denies a rampaging Only U in a thriller... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 8, 2025 The pair looked vulnerable to Lapras turning in, but after fending off that rival in a protracted duel, they had just enough to scramble home ahead of the desperately unlucky $1.8 favourite Only U, who lashed home and only missed by a head after a torrid passage. 'It's nice to get a winner today – it's hot, but it's less hot when you win,' said Hamelin. 'I think the horse was in good form and didn't deserve to be so long in the odds. I believed in him [and] I thought he was a chance, the only concern was the draw. 'But he had a good start, he led, he controlled the race and he held that to the line.' Hamelin will depart Hong Kong and return to France at the end of this season, but he will be giving his all until the end of the season. 'I will just do my best to the end. It's hard to plan a target a month before I leave but I will just do my best and try to get as many winners as I can before I leave,' said the jockey.
