
Tiny clawed tracks left in ancient mud are the oldest reptile footprints
Distinct clawed footprints found on a slab of 356 million-year-old rock from Australia suggest that reptile relatives appeared between 35 million and 40 million years earlier than previously believed.
The tracks also push back the origin of amniotes, a group that includes reptiles, birds and mammals, and provide new evidence about how animals transitioned from existing solely in the seas to living on land.
Amniotes represent a crucial part of the transition from aquatic to terrestrial life because they were the only tetrapods, or four-limbed creatures, that evolved to reproduce on land.
Previously, the oldest body fossils and footprints associated with amniotes were dated to 318 million years ago in Canada.
But the new findings, published on May 14 in the journal Nature, challenge such long-held assumptions and signal that the transformation of tetrapods living in water to living on land likely occurred much more rapidly than scientists thought.
'I'm stunned,' said study coauthor Per Erik Ahlberg, professor of evolution and developmental biology at Uppsala University in Sweden, in a statement. 'A single track-bearing slab, which one person can lift, calls into question everything we thought we knew about when modern tetrapods evolved.'
The location of the discovery indicates that Australia, once a central part of the ancient southern supercontinent of Gondwana that also included present-day Africa, South America, Arabia, Madagascar, Antarctica and India, may be the ideal place to look for more amniote and reptile fossils — and where they originated, according to the study authors.
The rock slab, found by amateur paleontologists and study coauthors Craig Eury and John Eason in the Snowy Plains Formation in Victoria, Australia, appears to show two sets of tracks from the same animal that represent the earliest clawed footprints ever discovered.
The shape of the feet is similar to a modern water monitor's, and though the animal's exact size is unknown, it may have resembled a small goanna-like creature about 80 centimeters (31 inches) in length, said lead study author John Long, strategic professor in paleontology at Flinders University. Asian water monitors are large lizards native to South and Southeast Asia, while goannas are large lizards commonly found in Australia.
Hooked claws, a key feature specific to reptiles, might have enabled the primitive tetrapod to dig and climb trees.
The animal that made the footprints is the oldest known reptile and oldest known amniote, Ahlberg said. And it's helping scientists crack the code on how tetrapods evolved.
'Our new find implies that the two main evolutionary lines leading to modern tetrapods — one, the line to modern amphibians, and two, the line leading to reptiles, mammals and birds — diverged from each other much earlier in time than previously thought, likely back in the Devonian Period about 380 million years ago,' Long said.
Prior to this finding, the Devonian Period was believed to be a time of primitive fishlike tetrapods and 'fishapods' like Tiktaalik, which exhibited traits of fish and early tetrapods and began to explore shorelines in limited ways.
But the new study reveals a diversity of large and small tetrapods, some aquatic and others largely or entirely terrestrial, likely lived at the same time.
'One of the implications of our research is that tetrapod diversity at this time was higher, and included more advanced forms, than had been thought,' Ahlberg wrote in an email.
It's crucial to understand when life shifted from being entirely aquatic to terrestrial because it is one of the biggest steps in the evolution of life, Long said. This transition showed that animals were no longer dependent on living in or near water.
The transition occurred partly because amniotes evolved to reproduce with hard-shelled, rather than soft-shelled, eggs.
'The vertebrates' move onto land was an important part, and within that a key step was the evolution of the amniotic egg in the immediate common ancestors of reptiles and mammals,' Ahlberg said. 'So these events form a key episode in our own ancestry as well as the history of the planet.'
The new study pushes the origin of amniotes much deeper into the Carboniferous Period, 299 million to 359 million years ago, which allows a much greater length of time for the diversification of early reptiles, said Stuart Sumida, president of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology and professor of biology at California State University, San Bernardino. Sumida, who wrote an accompanying article to release with the study, did not participate in the new research.
Long has been studying ancient fish fossils from the Mansfield district, where the slab was found, since 1980.
'The Mansfield area has produced many famous fossils, beginning with spectacular fossil fishes found 120 years ago, and ancient sharks. But the holy grail that we were always looking for was evidence of land animals, or tetrapods, like early amphibians. Many had searched for such trackways but never found them — until this slab arrived in our laboratory to be studied,' he said.
Fossils from the Mansfield district have shed light on how sexual organs might have first evolved in ancient armored fish.
Now, the researchers want to know what else lived in Gondwana alongside the ancient reptile they found.
The findings have inspired researchers to broaden the search for fossils of the earliest amniotes, and their close relatives, to the southern continents, Sumida said.
'Most of the skeletal fossil discoveries of the earliest amniotes are known from continents derived from the northern components of Pangea,' Sumida said in an email. 'Discoveries there suggested that amniote origins might be in those regions. It seems clear to me now that we must now expand our search for Early Carboniferous localities in Australia, South America, and Africa.'

Resilience, a Private Japanese Spacecraft, Crash-Landed on the Moon
A Japanese spacecraft has probably crashed on the Moon, the second failed landing attempt for Tokyo-based private firm ispace. The HAKUTO-R Mission 2 (M2) lander — also called Resilience — began its landing sequence from a 100-kilometre-altitude orbit at 3.13am local time on 5 June. The craft was due to land near the centre of Mare Frigoris (Sea of Cold) at 4.17am. The ispace team said at a press conference that it lost contact with M2 when the craft was 192 metres above the Moon's surface and descending faster than expected. An attempt to reboot M2 was also unsuccessful. [Sign up for Today in Science, a free daily newsletter] M2 didn't receive measurements of the distance between itself and the lunar surface in time to slow down and reach its correct landing speed, the team said. 'It eventually slowed down, but not softly enough,' says Clive Neal, who studies the Moon at the University of Notre Dame in Indianapolis, US. He speculates that the failure was probably caused by a systems issue that wasn't identified and addressed during the M1 landing attempt. 'It's something that I believe will definitely be fixable, because getting that close means there's a few tweaks that are going to be needed for the next one,' he adds. If M2 had successfully landed on the lunar surface, the mission would have been the second time a commercial company had achieved the feat and a first for a non-US company. ispace's Mission 1 (M1) probably crashed during a landing attempt in April 2023. Lunar landings are challenging. When M1 crashed, Ryo Ujiie, ispace's chief technology officer said the telemetry — which collects data on the craft's altitude and speed — estimated that M1 was on the surface when it wasn't, causing the lander to free fall. Speaking to Nature last week, Ujiie said the company had addressed the telemetry issue with M2 and modified its software. 'We also carefully selected how to approach the landing site,' he added. Had M2 landed successfully, the craft would have supplied electricity for its cargo, including water electrolyzing equipment and a module for food production experiments — developed by Japan-based Takasago Thermal Engineering and biotechnology firm Euglena. A deep space radiation probe made by Taiwan's National Central University, and the 54-centimetre Tenacious rover were also be on board. The rover, created by ispace's European subsidiary in Luxemburg, was going to be released from the lander to collect imagery, location data and lunar sand known as regolith. Tenacious also carries a small red house made by Swedish artist Mikael Genberg. The craft launched on 15 January from Cape Canaveral, Florida, onboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The rocket was also carrying the Blue Ghost Moon lander — developed by Firefly Aerospace, an aerospace firm based in Texas — which landed on the Moon on 2 March. M2 took a longer path to the moon than Blue Ghost, performing a lunar flyby on 15 February and spending two months in a low-energy transfer orbit before entering lunar orbit on 7 May. Ujiie says the path was slower because it was a low-energy trajectory, meaning that less fuel was used to move between Earth and lunar orbit. Richard de Grijs, an astronomer at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, says there will likely be more private companies trying to land their own crafts on the Moon. 'It seems that the big government players like NASA are quite keen to partner with commercial companies,' he says, because they can develop and launch crafts more cheaply than government bodies. In a world without people, how fast would NYC fall apart? Here's the timeline.
Imagine the ceaseless cacophony of New York City suddenly stopped. No sirens wailed. No cars zoomed. No subways rumbled beneath sidewalks. All eight million New Yorkers disappeared overnight. Now, imagine what would happen next. If no one's around to sweep the sidewalks, weed Central Park, or turn the power grid on, nature would move in—and quick. Dandelions would spring up in asphalt cracks. Raccoons would move into abandoned apartments. Sidewalk trees would outgrow their planters. But just how swiftly would the city disappear beneath a curtain of green? We talked to architects and urban ecologists to map out a potential timeline. With no one to maintain the power grid, the Big Apple would go dark within a few days. The Milky Way would illuminate Midtown as light pollution disappears overnight. Without air conditioning and heat, 'you start getting weird temperatures inside the building. Mold starts to form on the walls,' says architect Jana Horvat of the University of Zagreb, who studies building decay. Some green energy projects in the city might stay lit for longer, such as the solar and wind-powered Ricoh Americas billboard in Times Square. Eventually, though, even the Ricoh billboard would go dark; not because the billboard would lose power, but because there would be no one to replace its LED lightbulbs. Without power, the pump rooms that clear out 13 million gallons of water daily from the subway would be useless, and the train tunnels would begin to flood. 'Probably this water would result in [the subway] being, you know, occupied by new species,' says Horvat. 'Some plants would start growing, some animals' would move in. Likely, species that already thrive in the subway—rats, cockroaches, pigeons, opossums—would be the first ones to take advantage of the human-free passages. Within the first month, the manicured lawns of Central and Prospect Park would grow wild and unkept. 'When you stop mowing a lawn, you get a meadow,' says botanist Peter Del Tredici, a senior research scientist emeritus at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, who wrote a book on urban plant life. Within a month, dandelions, ragweed, and yellow nutsedge would start popping up in the now knee-high grasses of New York's iconic parks. 'First, it's herbaceous plants, but then, you know, you get trees and shrubs and vines,' says Tredici. In a year without people, many of New York's buildings would start to deteriorate. 'The glass facades would be the first to go,' says Horvat. The single-pane glass on brownstones and family homes would be the most vulnerable, but in a decade, even the heat-strengthened glass on skyscrapers would start to wear down and crack. And once windows break, water gets in. 'Then you'll have plants start growing in there,' says Tredici. Apartments would transform into humid hothouses, the perfect habitat for mosquitoes, water snakes, fungus, and rushes. 'It's like a wetland on the second floor.' Without maintenance, the asphalt streets and parking lots in New York would quickly degrade. Freeze-thaw cycles would create cracks. 'Water settles in that crack, and then that's all the plants need,' says Tredici. First, mosses would grow. Within a decade, young trees may even sprout. The London planetree, the most common street tree in New York, is particularly known for its resilience and fast growth rate, and any of its offspring could quickly find a toehold in a deteriorating asphalt parking lot. Within a decade, the Statue of Liberty would also start to deteriorate. The statue's copper plating would start to split, allowing sea spray to break down its interior steel skeleton. Steel 'is a very durable material, but it is very prone to corroding if it comes in contact with damp conditions,' says Horvat: That's bad news for New York, a city made from steel. In the decades since humans abandoned New York, a 'novel ecosystem' would emerge, says Tredici. 'It's not going to look like anything that's ever existed anywhere in the world.' Tredici points to Detroit as a case study. Today, crabapple trees—tough ornamentals native to the Central Asian mountains—blanket Detroit. 'They actually will spread all over,' says Tredici, and after 50 years without humans, Central and Riverside Park's crabapple trees would grow among a young forest full of London planetrees, honeylocusts, pin oaks, and Norway maples (the last three being common New York street trees). Nightshade vines and poison ivy would creep up buildings, and mosses and resilient weeds would cover the higher reaches of exposed windy skyscrapers. Among the greenery, more and more animals would call Manhattan home. Deer, rabbits, groundhogs, and wild turkeys would move in. Larger predators—coyotes, bobcats, black bears, and copperhead snakes—would follow. Peregrine falcons, bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, and great horned owls would nest in hollowed-out buildings, while feral cats prowl the abandoned upper floors of apartment buildings, feasting on mice and birds. Despite their futuristic look, the city's newest spires, such as 10 Hudson Yards and 111 West 57th Street, would be the first to fall. These buildings rely on slender, reinforced steel skeletons encased in reinforced concrete. But when the power shuts off and water seeps in through these buildings' glass curtain walls, these high-rises would rot from the inside out. The Empire State Building and Chrysler Building would likely outlast their younger rivals. Built to support much more weight than necessary (a safety precaution in the early days of skyscrapers), these giants' steel frames are bolstered by thick masonry and interior walls. Ten Hudson Yards might last a century. The Empire State Building might last 50 years longer, but eventually even these historic titans would collapse. After a century, New York City would 'become a forest,' says Tredici. A canopy of mature trees over a 100-feet-tall would replace the city's skyscrapers. Soil would regenerate. Concrete, one of the world's 'strongest' construction materials, says Horvat, would dissolve. New York's carefully manicured river parks, such as the Hudson River and East River Park, would transform into wetlands teeming with eels, egrets, turtles, beavers, and muskrats. But even as skyscrapers fell and forests grew, parts of New York would 'survive for centuries in this ruinous state,' says Horvat. Cracked marble lions would stalk the forest floor. Soil and underbrush would obscure once-gleaming granite fountains. Rusted steel beams would jut out from dense root systems. Even without humans, pieces of New York would endure—a fragile legacy for the future to either uncover or forget. Coal mines on Alberta's eastern slopes could push fishery ‘beyond recovery': study
CALGARY - Old coal mines on the eastern slopes of the Alberta Rockies are leaching chemicals that are poisoning the fish downstream, says a new study by Alberta government scientists. It also suggests any new coal developments could result in 'population collapse' of fish species in a nearby lake. The findings were made in a provincial government study posted online May 27. The paper is awaiting peer review. The scientists who authored it were not made available to speak to reporters. The other authors not employed by the province did not respond to requests for comment. Alberta has responded to the study with an advisory saying people should consider 'limiting consumption' of three fish species drawn from Crowsnest Lake, a fishing spot downstream from the coal mines. Those species were found to have dangerously high levels of selenium, a mineral found in coal-rich deposits, in their body tissue. The authors write the study shows that 'biological impacts of (mountaintop removal) coal mining can persist long after mining operations end.' They suggest that 'any further coal mine development may well push the Crowsnest fishery beyond sustainability.' The study comes after the Alberta Energy Regulator, or AER, granted an Australia-based coal company permission to start a controversial coal exploration on the eastern slopes. The project was initially rejected in 2021 when a panel ruled the likely environmental effects on fish and water quality outweighed potential economic benefits. But the regulator said last month it's possible there will be runoff from the nearby pit lake that Northback Holding Corp. is using. It ultimately concluded the project won't have any effect on the water quality downstream. The AER said that 'out of an abundance of caution,' Northback will have to comply with a directive for managing drilling waste in response to concerns over selenium. The new study measured selenium levels in fish from Crowsnest Lake, which is fed by creeks connected to Tent Mountain and Grassy Mountain – both former coal mine sites. Alberta has a fish tissue selenium guideline of four micrograms per gram. The authors write that every single fish sample analyzed exceeded this value. Average selenium concentrations were highest in Brown Trout, coming in at 18 micrograms per gram. The authors write that the selenium levels could lead to 'behavioural changes, physical symptoms ... respiratory issues, reproductive issues and ultimately population collapse.' Accumulating fluid in body tissue or fin and tail damage are among other side effects. Most people are exposed to healthy levels of selenium through grains and flours, but Health Canada says elevated consumption can lead to hair loss, decreased cognitive function and gastrointestinal disorders. The high selenium concentrations can only be explained by 'the incorporation of legacy coal mine pollution,' the authors write. The study goes on to say selenium levels in fish in Crowsnest Lake are similar to those found in water bodies near Fernie, B.C., that resulted in Teck Mining Company, which owned and operated a nearby mine, being forced in 2021 by B.C. provincial court to pay a $60 million fine – the largest fine ever imposed under the Fisheries Act. Fish populations in those mining-impacted streams were found in 2011 to have an average selenium concentration of 7.6 micrograms per gram. Nine years later, the adult westslope cutthroat population had suffered a 93 per cent decline, the study says. The authors conclude that factors including the emergence of Whirling Disease, drought conditions, high fishing activity — and now high selenium levels in fish — make the Crowsnest Lake and River 'an especially vulnerable system.' 'Any new development of coal mining along the eastern slopes may well push the Crowsnest fishery beyond recovery,' they write. Colin Cooke, one of the authors, published a 2024 study that found a former coal mine in the Crowsnest River watershed was releasing selenium to fish at rates more than dozens of times higher than federal and provincial guidelines. Cooke is a senior aquatic scientist with the Alberta government, according to LinkedIn. Peter Doyle, CEO of Evolve Power Ltd., formerly Montem Resources Ltd., which previously sought to restart an old mine on Tent Mountain, said in an email that the company is complying with terms set out by the AER. 'As reflected in other work by the author, there are numerous contributors to water quality in the Crowsnest River valley, not related to Tent Mountain, including changes in upstream conditions, changes in weathering rates and other anthropogenic changes in the watershed,' Doyle wrote, referring to Cooke's 2024 study. That report notes those factors, among others, could be contributing to contaminant levels and concluded that coal mining activities in the Crowsnest River watershed 'have been impacting ecosystems downstream for decades.' Northback, in an email, wrote that Crowsnest Lake is unrelated to its Grassy Mountain project. 'However, with our own project, Northback is committed to adhering to the highest environmental standards and ensuring a safe water supply.' Ryan Fournier, press secretary for Alberta's environment ministry, deferred questions about monitoring and enforcement to the AER. He said the province is funding a series of studies and submitting them to peer-reviewed academic journals as the province revises its coal policy. He also said the authors were not available to speak to media because they 'are not trained spokespeople.' The AER told The Canadian Press that it has directed Evolve Power, the Tent Mountain owner, to submit a 'selenium management plan proposal' that targets reductions in selenium in mine-affected water. Evolve was to submit that plan by July 31 of last year, but the AER said it granted the company an extension to March 31, 2026. The energy regulator also said that while selenium levels are elevated, 'there is no evidence of non-compliance on monitoring or selenium management requirements at this time.' The province announced in December it would allow coal mining to take place in Alberta under certain conditions. However, it exempted Northback and Evolve Power's projects from those rules because they were considered 'advanced.' Fisheries and Oceans Canada said in a statement that it doesn't comment on provincial permitting decisions and it hasn't been asked to review the local impacts to wildlife in the area.
