Wrapped in history: Nyonya ‘popiah' brings Peranakan heritage to the table
SHAH ALAM, May 15 — At first glance, Nyonya popiah may resemble the typical spring rolls sold at street stalls or night markets.
But with its crispier skin, richer filling, and signature sambal and sweet sauce, this Peranakan delicacy tells a deeper story rooted in cultural heritage.
However, Jennifer Lee Choo Neo, the Cultural and Social Committee Member of the Persatuan Peranakan Baba Nyonya Kuala Lumpur dan Selangor (PPBNKLS) said the delicate wrapper and rich filling reflect generations of heritage from the Chinese Peranakan, or Baba, community.
'Nyonya popiah is more complex to prepare, with a wrapper made from wheat flour, tapioca flour, eggs, warm water, and salt. The batter is rested for 30 to 60 minutes for a softer, more flavourful texture — unlike regular spring roll wrappers, which use only flour and water.

'To create the wrapper, the batter is gently spread in a thin layer over a flat pan,' she said during a Peranakan Chinese cooking demonstration for media practitioners held in conjunction with the Nyonya Heritage@The Saujana Hotel programme, held here recently.
Lee, 58, said the filling is made from fresh ingredients such as jicama (sengkuang), cucumber, bean sprouts, omelette, fried tofu, and prawns, combined with sautéed fermented soybean paste (taucu) and garlic, resulting in a complex blend of sweet, spicy, and aromatic flavours.
As for the sambal, she explained that it uses either fresh or dried chillies, garlic, toasted wheat flour, and palm sugar (gula Melaka), while the sweet sauce is made from a mixture of palm sugar, flour, and a bit of soy sauce.
'Although slightly tedious to prepare, this delicacy is often a special choice for various events, including birthday celebrations or weddings,' said Lee, who is a third-generation Baba descendant.

Nyonya popiah is one of 15 traditional Peranakan Chinese dishes featured in the 'Baba Nyonya Heritage' initiative at The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur throughout this month, symbolising a fusion of heritage cuisine and modern hospitality.
The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur General Manager Jasmine Ong Li, said the campaign is not only aimed at introducing Baba cuisine to the public, but also serves as an important platform to revive time-honoured recipes rich in stories and cultural values.
She added that other featured dishes include buah keluak, lobak masak lemak (braised radish in coconut gravy), nasi kemuli, pai tee, stuffed cencaru (fish), ee pioh soup, pajeri eggplant, Nyonya sambal belacan, fried tamarind prawns, and various traditional kuih.

She said each dish was carefully curated to ensure authenticity in terms of cooking techniques, secret ingredients, and traditional preparation methods inherited from the Baba community's ancestors.
Meanwhile, PPBNKLS President Vivienne Lee @ Lianah Abdullah said to support this initiative, the association provided intensive training to the hotel's culinary team, covering the ingredients and preparation methods.
'Our collaboration is grounded in a shared goal — to preserve and elevate Peranakan heritage for future generations. To us, this partnership is about safeguarding and reintroducing Peranakan heritage, because each dish carries meaning, not just flavour,' she said, adding that Peranakan Chinese cuisine is increasingly gaining popularity among the younger generation. — Bernama

He said the invitation was extended to the groups last month, Bernama reported. 'I've started (the talks) and I urge my counterparts to send their teams, officials and military intelligence personnel to continue to engage,' he said during a question-and-answer session following his special address at the Shangri-La Dialogue here. When asked about the possibility of elections in Myanmar, Anwar said the immediate priority is to ensure peace, security and the delivery of humanitarian aid. He noted that Asean leaders have continued to push for an extended ceasefire and the protection of all humanitarian aid workers. 'If the elections are fair and more inclusive and do not exclude parties, then, of course, we are ready to accept, although (the process) may not be perfect,' he added. Myanmar's State Administration Council announced in March that they will hold a general election either in December this year or January 2026 at the latest, according to international media reports.

Anwar warns against new geopolitical orthodoxy, reaffirms Asean centrality

(EPA Images pic) PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment as Asean chair to defending the bloc's centrality and long-standing principle of active non-alignment. Speaking at the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Anwar warned against rising geopolitical orthodoxy and bloc politics that risk destabilising the region. He said Southeast Asia does not need a new Cold War, and called instead for an equilibrium built on openness and cooperation. 'Preserving our autonomy is not about resisting others. It is about strengthening ourselves. This, in essence, is what Asean centrality is about,' Bernama quoted him as saying in his keynote speech. He criticised 'coalitions that build walls instead of bridges', warning that they fuel an arms race and erode the legitimacy of multilateralism. 'A stable region is not one braced for conflict, but one grounded in openness, transparency and habit-forming cooperation.' Anwar also stressed the importance of continuing to engage with major powers and middle powers alike. 'We will engage all who are willing – major powers and middle powers alike – not to set one against the other, but to maximise our own strategic space,' he said, stressing the importance of balancing ties with the US, China, and partners across Asia, Europe and the Global South. Referencing the Johor-Singapore special economic zone as an example of what bilateral cooperation can achieve, Anwar said Asean offers a wider canvas for such partnerships. He also cited outcomes from the recently concluded 46th Asean Summit and related summits in Kuala Lumpur, citing the adoption of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Asean 2045, progress on Timor-Leste's admission, and deeper engagement with the Gulf Cooperation Council and China through joint summits. Touching on regional flashpoints, Anwar called for calm, direct and consistent engagement with all parties in the South China Sea dispute. 'We have no interest in seeing tensions spiral into confrontation, least of all in waters so critical to our own security and prosperity,' he said. The prime minister said all parties must uphold international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, adding that Malaysia rejected the idea of spheres of influence that silenced smaller nations. He said true stability does not come from dividing the world into zones of control, but from creating space for all countries to participate meaningfully in shaping the global order.

Philippines defence chief says China needs to overcome ‘deficit of trust'

(AFP pic) SINGAPORE : China has a 'deficit of trust and credibility' it needs to overcome in order to mend its fraught defence ties with the Philippines, though any breakthrough in the near term remains unlikely, Manila's top defence official said on Saturday. Defence secretary Gilberto Teodoro told Reuters that the threat of China's growing military prowess was 'undeniable', echoing comments from Pete Hegseth, the counterpart from his US treaty ally. 'China's activities are getting more expansive and more aggressive. Their demonstrations of force are getting more frequent, and in the West Philippine Sea, we are getting used to their activities, but they have expanded the areas where they are doing it,' he said, referring to the South China Sea. In a wide-ranging interview on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue defence meeting in Singapore, Teodoro spoke of the frustration of dealing with Chinese military counterparts who rarely stray from talking points and propaganda and represent an institution that exists to serve the Communist Party leadership. 'I believe my foreign affairs colleagues are trying their level best to engage China. But, on the defence side, what we have seen is that China has to overcome a deficit of trust and credibility,' he said. 'They continue their activities while gaslighting us that because the proximity and the defensive capabilities of the Philippines are not on par with Vietnam, so they choose us as an easy target,' he said. But, Teodoro said both the US and the Philippines wanted to peacefully deter China and he remained confident in Washington's security commitments after meeting Hegseth in Singapore. The Philippines has been among the most vocal critics of China's growing assertion of sovereignty in the South China Sea, in contrast to some of its neighbours like Malaysia, who have adopted a more cautious stance. 'No country in Asean is subjected to the same amount of intense activities in all fronts by China, but the Philippines,' said Teodoro. China's defence ministry did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment. China's foreign ministry earlier this month urged the Philippines to stop provocations in the South China Sea and officials have frequently accused the US of sowing discord in the region. China claims almost the entire South China Sea, despite overlapping claims by Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan. A 2016 ruling of an international arbitral tribunal said Beijing's claims, based on its historic maps, have no basis under international law, a decision China does not recognise.
