PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment as Asean chair to defending the bloc's centrality and long-standing principle of active non-alignment.
Speaking at the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Anwar warned against rising geopolitical orthodoxy and bloc politics that risk destabilising the region.
He said Southeast Asia does not need a new Cold War, and called instead for an equilibrium built on openness and cooperation.
'Preserving our autonomy is not about resisting others. It is about strengthening ourselves. This, in essence, is what Asean centrality is about,' Bernama quoted him as saying in his keynote speech.
He criticised 'coalitions that build walls instead of bridges', warning that they fuel an arms race and erode the legitimacy of multilateralism.
'A stable region is not one braced for conflict, but one grounded in openness, transparency and habit-forming cooperation.'
Anwar also stressed the importance of continuing to engage with major powers and middle powers alike.
'We will engage all who are willing – major powers and middle powers alike – not to set one against the other, but to maximise our own strategic space,' he said, stressing the importance of balancing ties with the US, China, and partners across Asia, Europe and the Global South.
Referencing the Johor-Singapore special economic zone as an example of what bilateral cooperation can achieve, Anwar said Asean offers a wider canvas for such partnerships.
He also cited outcomes from the recently concluded 46th Asean Summit and related summits in Kuala Lumpur, citing the adoption of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Asean 2045, progress on Timor-Leste's admission, and deeper engagement with the Gulf Cooperation Council and China through joint summits.
Touching on regional flashpoints, Anwar called for calm, direct and consistent engagement with all parties in the South China Sea dispute.
'We have no interest in seeing tensions spiral into confrontation, least of all in waters so critical to our own security and prosperity,' he said.
The prime minister said all parties must uphold international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, adding that Malaysia rejected the idea of spheres of influence that silenced smaller nations.
He said true stability does not come from dividing the world into zones of control, but from creating space for all countries to participate meaningfully in shaping the global order.

In birthday message, King reminds civil servants loyalty means trust and integrity — not blind worship

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, today expressed his appreciation of the Madani Government and its civil servants, who have worked hard to manage the country's economy and development. Sultan Ibrahim said the success of the recent Asean Summit was proof of the country's leadership's ability to strengthen regional and international cooperation. 'Although there are those who underestimate Malaysia's capabilities, with hard work and a spirit of cooperation, especially by civil servants, all challenges and obstacles have been successfully overcome,' said His Majesty. Sultan Ibrahim was speaking during the Royal Address at the Investiture Ceremony for the year 2025 in conjunction with the King's official birthday celebration at Istana Negara. Also present was Her Majesty, Raja Zarith Sofiah, the Queen of Malaysia. Present at the ceremony were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Cabinet Ministers. Sultan Ibrahim also reminded civil servants to provide excellent service and practise the second principle of the Rukun Negara, which is 'Loyalty to the King and the Country'. 'Loyalty does not mean worship, but honesty and trust in carrying out the duties and responsibilities given, and not betraying the country and the people's trust,' said His Majesty. The King stressed that civil servants must be free from the influence of political parties, be neutral and always prioritise the interests of the country and the people. 'Government officials must ensure that every decision made is in accordance with the conditions and regulations set, not according to the dictates of politicians. 'Every expenditure must also be closely controlled, and cannot be used as desired, by ministers or members of Parliament, to fish for votes, to the point of causing the government's debt to increase,' said the King. Sultan Ibrahim also called on all enforcement agencies to carry out their duties with full integrity so that the people do not lose trust and continue to respect the uniform they wear. — Bernama

Introduce e-voting in MMC for greater credibility, urges senator

Senator Dr RA Lingeshwaran said there have been many complaints over the years of ballot papers reaching the doctors after results are announced. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Ballot papers for the Malaysian Medical Council elections are not reaching many of the 74,000 doctors in the country, which raises questions on the credibility of the annual election process, says Senator Dr RA Lingeshwaran. Speaking to FMT, the former director of Sungai Bakap Hospital in Penang said there have been many complaints over the years of ballot papers reaching the doctors after results are announced. Lingeshwaran said he, too, had not received ballot papers a few times; on average, only 20% of the ballot papers are returned to MMC, he said. The senator acccused MMC of not improving the election process despite complaints, and urged the new director-general of health, Dr Mahathar Abdul Wahab, to introduce an online election process in view of the large number of doctors involved in the polls. 'The frequent transfers of doctors in the government sector also contributes to their not receiving the ballot papers,' he said. 'Postal voting for such an important government organisation makes the system obsolete and questionable in today's digital world. He urged MMC under the new leadership of Mahathar to introduce e-voting as soon as possible. 'MMC has the database and the means to put it into practice,' he said. MMC is the national medical regulator and is empowered to register and licence medical practitioners and regulate their standards. It is headed by the health director-general and nine appointed doctors from the universities and 17 elected members, 15 of which are from Peninsular Malaysia and one each from Sabah and Sarawak. The council started sending out ballot papers to doctors from May 23. They have until July 25 to return the marked ballots.

Not for sale: Sultan Ibrahim stresses titles like Datuk and Tan Sri must be earned, not bought

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, stressed that federal awards of orders, stars and medals are not for sale or lobbying, but are only given to individuals who are truly deserving and have rendered service to the government and the country. Sultan Ibrahim said that although the government has outlined the conditions for consideration, he will still re-evaluate each proposed candidate. 'In my view, only individuals who have served and rendered service to the government for a long time, or who have brought glory to the country, should be accepted. Indeed, not many pass the conditions every year. Although there are parties who lobby, I will not entertain them. 'The ranks of Datuk and Tan Sri are not for sale. If you have a lot of money, do charity, help the poor and needy,' said His Majesty. In this regard, the King said that the successful recipients today should appreciate and be proud of the awards they have been bestowed with. Sultan Ibrahim said this at the investiture ceremony for 2025, held in conjunction with the official birthday celebration of the King at Istana Negara here today. Also present at the ceremony was Her Majesty, Raja Zarith Sofiah, the Queen of Malaysia. Present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Minister of Communications Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Cabinet Ministers. Meanwhile, the King also expressed his gratitude to the entire nation for the wishes and prayers that always accompany him in every step he takes in carrying out his duties and responsibilities as the Head of State. 'I would also like to express my gratitude to all parties who have made all the events in conjunction with my birthday celebration this year a success. 'Let us pray to the presence of Allah SWT, may this beloved country of Malaysia be blessed and remain peaceful, progressive and prosperous,' said His Majesty. — Bernama
