Jakarta [Indonesia], August 12 (ANI): An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 rattled Indonesia on Tuesday, a statement by the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said.As per the statement, the earthquake took place at a depth of 39km.In a post on X, the NCS said, 'EQ of M: 6.3, On: 12/08/2025 13:54:27 IST, Lat: 2.09 S, Long: 138.81 E, Depth: 39 Km, Location: West Papua Indonesia."
Earlier on August 7, another earthquake of magnitude 4.9 on the Richter Scale occurred at a depth of 106km.In a post on X, the NCS said, 'EQ of M: 4.9, On: 07/08/2025 20:59:00 IST, Lat: 1.03 N, Long: 98.80 E, Depth: 106 Km, Location: Northern Sumatra, Indonesia."
Indonesia is located between two major tectonic plates, namely, the Australian Plate and the newly separated Sunda Plate. The tectonics of Indonesia is very complex, as it is a meeting point of several tectonic plates. Indonesia is located between two continental plates: the Sahul Shelf and the Sunda Plate, and between two oceanic plates: the Pacific Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate. The subduction of the Indian Plate beneath the Sunda Plate formed the volcanic arc in western Indonesia, one of the most seismically active areas on the planet, with a long history of powerful eruptions and earthquakes. This chain of active volcanoes formed Sumatra, Java, Bali, and the Lesser Sunda Islands, most of which, particularly Java and Bali, emerged within the last 2-3 million years. The Pacific and Sahul plate movements controlled the tectonics of the eastern portion of Indonesia.Subduction occurs along Southeastern Sumatra and West Java. Sumatra is more active in recent years despite being in the same subduction margin. The reason for the lack of frequent seismic activity over West Java is a problem of time frame and not of tectonic activity. While it may only take a hundred years for a large-scale earthquake to occur off the coast of Sumatra, it may take roughly 500 years off the coast of western Java. (ANI)

Google And NASA Are Going To Use AI To Help Astronauts In Space With Their Health

Last Updated: Google is working with NASA to build a new AI virtual doctor that looks to help the astronauts with any medical or health issues. Space missions with astronauts on board will get health assistance from Google as the company looks for new frontiers to use its evolving AI tools with NASA. The tech giant is going to assist the space agency and its troops in space with an AI-powered medical assistant that will be trained to take care of the astronauts who spend weeks or months in their spaceflights for their missions. Having a doctor on board can be a long and expensive exercise so the agency is relying on tech assistance to make this work in a better way. NASA is able to help its crew in space when the missions are short but the longer duration launches need better assistance, especially with varying health concerns. The AI has been designed to handle these issues and even monitor their conditions autonomously. The Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant (CMO-DA) is being developed to help the crew when they are unable to contact the doctor or anyone on Earth during their mission. The AI model for medical help offers different ways to chat. You can do it via text, images, and even voice. Google is powering the AI doctor through its high-tech Vertex AI cloud network, which promises efficient performance. The joint AI effort will allow NASA to own the source code of the app and help Google refine and improve the AI doctor with health and valuable data. Early tests of CMO-DA have shown encouraging signs for the space agency. The AI doctor was able to accurately diagnose the issues related to ankle injury, ear pain and more. The report says 88 percent accuracy for ankle-related issues, 74 percent for flank pain and 80 percent for ear pains. NASA wants the virtual assistant to go beyond the usual health issues and also link the AI model to detect and treat effects of being in space for a long time. Google is clearly using AI beyond the regular tasks and putting it for genuine use. It is helping researchers decipher the language of whale using AI and helping them study the mammals in deep ocean. view comments First Published: August 13, 2025, 13:46 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Mysterious Comet Enters Solar System, NASA Confirms It's The Fastest Interstellar Object Ever

Last Updated: Details about a mysterious interstellar object detected in the solar system on July 1 are now out, as shared by NASA scientists with the world. An exciting new update has emerged from NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C, about a mysterious interstellar object – 3I/ATLAS, which is speeding through our solar system at extraordinary velocities. Detected on July 1, the 3I/ATLAS has fascinated scientists in the USA and the rest of the world for running through the solar system at an astonishing speed of 1,30,000 miles per hour. According to NASA's Hubble Space Telescope observations, the 3I/ATLAS is the fastest interstellar object ever detected, with its remarkable speed of 130,000 miles per hour. Capable of travelling 209,000 km/hour, 3I/ATLAS surpasses previous interstellar visitors such as Oumuamua and Borisov in speed. Scientists are attributing billions of years of gravitational interactions, known as the 'gravitational slingshot effect", to the object's velocity, with passing stars, planets and nebulae imparting additional momentum to the comet. Given its rapid flow, the object is only briefly visible to the scientists, who have had to undertake their studies on the fleeting window of opportunity. NASA is hoping to capture as much information as possible about the 3I/ATLAS. NASA's Hubble Space Telescope observations have also found other details about the fastest ever interstellar object in the solar system. When observations from Vera C. Rubin Observatory were revealed, it was believed the 3I/ATLAS's icy core could be 7 miles wide (11.2 km). However, the latest estimation claims it is much smaller, at most 3.5 miles (5.6 km) across and possibly 1,000 feet (320 meters) in diameter. Despite the readjusted estimation, 3I/ATLAS remains the largest interstellar object ever discovered. It has also been confirmed through NASA's powerful telescopes that 3I/ATLAS is not a solid rock but only a comet, which is a chunk of ice containing frozen gases and dust surrounded by a halo of evaporating material. Another great revelation from the study is the estimated age of 3I/ATLAS. According to a thorough analysis by NASA, this object has been orbiting the Milky Way for at least eight billion years, which is nearly twice as old as the solar system itself, with an estimated age of 4.6 billion years. While navigating through the solar system at incredible speeds, the 3I/ATLAS poses no threat to Earth, according to NASA scientists. When the object reaches the closest point to the sun in October, it will be on the opposite side of the Sun relative to Earth during this time, which eliminates the risk of collision and any significant gravitational disturbances. view comments First Published: August 13, 2025, 12:12 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
