First championship links course in 100 years being developed by ambitious group

A first championship links golf course in 100 years is being developed for the north of Ireland by the Galgorm Collection.
The Hospitality group are investing €35 million in building the 18-hole course in Bellarena, Co Derry, on the north west coast between Limavady and Coleraine.
The company said development of Bellarena Golf Links will start next year, subject to planning approval, and open in 2029. It said building the course would bring its total investment in the north west to around €75 million, creating an additional 300 jobs.
The announcement comes as the area plays host to The 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club around 20 miles away. Golf tourism in Northern Ireland generates €99 million annually, a number that has increased 66% since Portrush last hosted The Open Championship in 2019.
Tourist bosses have highlighted capacity is a limiting factor in driving further growth, with only so many visitors able to play on the region's landmark seaside links course at any one time.
Galgorm Collection already owns and runs the championship parkland course at Galgorm Castle in Ballymena and a course at Roe Valley in Limavady.
Galgorm Collection managing director, Colin Johnston, said: "Our exciting plans to develop a new 18-hole links golf course at Bellarena on Northern Ireland's stunning north west coast will deliver a once-in-generation opportunity to drive a new era of golfing and tourism success that will amplify our outstanding and award-winning credentials while also creating hundreds of jobs.
"Preparatory work is already well under way that could pave the way for development from next year before we welcome our first guests in 2029. We look forward to consulting widely on our plans and engaging stakeholders at every level to ensure collective, shared success for the local community, the north west region and Northern Ireland as a whole.'
The announcement was welcomed by Stormont's Economy Minister, Dr Caoimhe Archibald. She said: 'Golf tourism generated a record €99 million for the region last year and this month's Open at Royal Portrush will help to increase this impact even further. I commend the Galgorm Collection team for their confidence and ambition in supporting our drive to amplify the regional prosperity which the sport can bring.'
At the forefront of the region's tourism growth, Galgorm Collection has invested around £120 million in less than two decades and currently employs a team of more than 1,400.
Ellvena Graham OBE, Tourism Northern Ireland Board Chair, said: 'With a rich heritage and stunning views, Northern Ireland is a highly sought-after destination for golfers from across the globe and our golf strategy focuses on maximising our strengths to continue to grow this crucially important part of our tourism offer.
"Galgorm Collection has been a pioneer in developing an outstanding, internationally acclaimed tourism product and I'm delighted that this key, experienced tourism stakeholder is further investing in this area.'
Welcoming the plans, East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell, said: "Tourism is an important element in the economic development of the North West and an investment of this scale by Galgorm Collection will provide a major economic boost for the area and create new job opportunities while also helping to showcase the region's outstanding natural assets.
"This investment will also help ensure that the benefits of tourism are more widely spread, supporting local growth and prosperity. I'm delighted at the news and look forward to seeing these plans progress over the months ahead.'

Pádraig Harrington overcomes ‘crazy' distractions with bogey-free 65 to lead Senior Open

In an exercise of mind over matter, the recently crowned two-time US Senior Open champion managed to chisel out a score without having his best stuff and lead by a shot from Denmark's Thomas Bjorn and defending champion KJ Choi on eight-under at halfway. It was an impressive display of scoring by the Dubliner (53), who admitted he had the rub of the green on the famous Old Course. 'I rode my luck a lot today,' Harrington said after a round that included brilliant recoveries from the heather at the 16th and the trees at the 17th. 'Got my head in the game. Did a lot of good stuff mentally. Short game was sharp.' Despite a three-putt par at the long 14th, he used his length to two-putt for birdies at the first and the driveable ninth and 11th before following a birdie two at the long 15th with another from eight feet the last. More impressively, he survived what he described as three 'crazy' distractions. 'As I was teeing off on seven, I was nearly hit by an acorn coming out of the tree,' Harrington said. 'On that par-five [14th], a bug landed right down by my shoe as I took my backstroke, and I got completely distracted. 'Then on 17, it was actually a leaf. I didn't know what it was. Came in in front of my ball and nearly topped it. I had a weird day in many ways. They didn't cost me.' Despite scoring well, Harrington wants to play better over the weekend and add the Senior Open to his two wins in The Open Championship, having finished second twice and fifth last year. 'Look, I wouldn't want to play like that,' he said on a day when Darren Clarke shot 69 to share 36th on one under but Paul McGinley missed the one-over cut by a shot after a 70. 'Well, I would like to score like that the next two days, but I wouldn't think I'm going to get away with it. Hopefully, it will improve a little bit over the next few days.' In the ISPS HANDA Women's Scottish Open at Dundonald Links, Leona Maguire has her work cut out to catch rookie Lottie Woad. The English starlet shot a bogey-free, seven-under 65 to lead on her professional debut by two strokes from Denmark's Nanna Koerstz Madsen and world No 1 Nelly Korda, who both shot 66, on 12-under par. After winning the KPMG Women's Irish Open as an amateur – confirmed for the Palmer South Course at The K Club next August – by six shots, Woad finished third in the Amundi Evian Championship and turned professional. She had eight single putts yesterday compared to just three for Maguire, who had 33 putts in a one-under 71 that left her tied for eighth, six shots off the pace. Meanwhile, Fota Island's David Howard edged closer to winning his first Irish cap when he battled his way into the last 16 of the Pierse Motor Group South of Ireland Amateur Open Championship at Lahinch. Ranked second in the Order of Merit with the top two automatically selected tomorrow night for next month's matches at Woodhall Spa, he beat Palmerstown House's Ross McCormack 2&1 before seeing off Charleville's Jordan Boles 6&5 to set up a last-16 clash with Irish Close champion Thomas Abom. Abom's brother Liam beat Josh Hill one up and now faces Mark Cadden, but leading qualifier Dylan Keating fell in round one to Seán Desmond, Caolan Rafferty's rival on Saturday, as Colm Campbell lost on the 19th to Paul O'Hanlon.
