Watch a Tween Justin Bieber Predict His Pivot to R&B in 2008 Interview

Yahoo4 days ago
Was Justin Bieber pulling a long con on us this whole time? The singer who surprise dropped his soulful, 21-song Swag album on Friday doubled-down on his seventh album's swerve to a more spare, less pop radio-ready vibe in a throwback video he posted on Tuesday morning (July 15).
In the way back clip from a 2008 interview with Canadian broadcaster CTV's eTalk program, Bieber, 31, is asked by the interviewer if he gets nervous when he sings. 'To be honest, no, not really,' says tween JB, who was likely 12 or 13 when the chat was recorded. Looking dwarfed by the red leather chair he's sitting on, Bieber says of his chance to showcase his talents, 'I would never have thought this opportunity would happen, like, it's out of this world.'

Flashing forward to the day when he might have some success and a recording deal, London, Ontario-born Bieber predicts that when his day comes, 'I see myself doing more, like, R&B.' The video is cued to the sultry Swag between-the-sheets soul ballad 'Too Long,' which features the grown man lyrics, 'Yeah, sometimes I get insecure/ I be trying you know I do/ But I wanna let go/ Keep on stroking my ego while you're stroking my…'
In the full version of the conversation, Bieber talks about playing guitar, piano and trumpet after teaching himself to strum when he was 'really little,' and posting videos online of his early efforts that, at that point, were starting to rack up views. 'It's kind of weird, because I'm just like a normal person. I play sports and stuff with my friends… it's kind of different for me,' he says shyly about the widening spotlight. He admitted then had sometimes didn't tell his friends about his cover song videos because he just wanted to be 'a regular kid.'
At the time the video was recorded, Bieber said he had just returned from hanging out with one of his musical heroes, Usher. Soon after, he would sign with his longtime, now former, manager Scooter Braun, who discovered those early YouTube videos and signed the singer to a joint venture management contract with Raymond Braun Media Group (RBMG). The pair would team with Island Def Jam to release Bieber's debut EP, My World, in Nov. 2009.
While Bieber's career would mostly follow a pop path in the years to come thanks to hits such as breakout 2010 smash 'Baby' and Billboard Hot 100 No. 1's 'Boyfriend,' 'What Do You Mean?,' 'Sorry,' 'Love Yourself' and 'Peaches,' on his first full-length since 2021's Justice he appears to have been fully in charge of the look, feel and sound following his split with Braun in 2023.
The result is an album featuring a new cast of contributors including Carter Lang (SZA), Australian singer Eddie Benjamin, indie guitarist-singer Mk.gee and Dijon (Kanye West, Bon Iver), as well as features from rappers Gunna, Sexyy Red, Cash Cobain and Lil B on songs that get back to his early love of Usher-like balladry. On seductive, spare tracks that chronicle his turbulent personal life and struggles in the spotlight, Bieber seems to have achieved his early dream on an effort Variety said in a review, 'lands somewhere in between Bieber's greatness and his proclivity to give in to his artistic impulses, for better or worse, existing in a pocket of R&B that can often feel aimless but is nevertheless intentional.'

'I'm extremely nervous': Students rock out on stage for Bluesfest's final night

On the final night of Bluesfest, crowds could hear 'Mr. Brightside,' 'Girlfriend,' and 'Sweet Child O' Mine' resonating from the LeBreton Stage. But The Killers, Avril Lavigne and Guns N' Roses didn't make an appearance at Ottawa's biggest music festival this year. Instead, the guitarists, pianists, drummers, bassists and singers from about 10 different schools or community groups were rocking out on stage, with some performers as young as seven years old. The performers were part of Bluesfest's Be in the Band and Blues in the Schools programs that offer elementary and high school students mentorship opportunities from local artists. Following weeks of music practice during the school year, the students perform at their school or local community centre. Some are then offered the opportunity to take their show to Bluesfest. 'It's a pretty big deal,' said Bluesfest community programs manager Alan Marsden. 'You come together for a show in your community and see your kids performing up there. 'It gives you a sense of pride.' Blues in the Schools — 'a large bucket of cuteness,' according to Marsden — was up first. Twenty-two Grade 2 students from Corpus Christi lined up and sang just under 30 minutes worth of music, accompanied by dance moves and harmonicas simulating train sounds. The student's teacher, Jeannie Wong, has been involved with Blues in the Schools for 26 years. She gives up her summer holidays to prepare the children to have the 'one-of-a-kind experience' of performing at Bluesfest. 'I'm always excited to learn something new, but also bring that love of music and excitement for the children to spark that passion in them,' Wong said. 'It's thrilling to see the kids so excited and the light in their eyes when they finally get up on the stage.' Be in the Band was up next, with 18 separate sets of musicians, mostly playing rock or pop tunes to an audience that grew throughout the night, particularly when the rain started just before 8:30 p.m. Each group sang a song or two before cycling off the stage to make room for the next. Louisiana Saucier from Hadley Philemon Wright High School in Gatineau, Que., plays bass. This was her third time performing with Be in the Band. Before hitting the stage, the 14-year-old said it can be nerve-wrecking to play for a crowd — but it's still a great experience. 'It's fun to be in a band with people my own age,' she said. 'It's nice to just create something.' Not every performer is as musically experienced as Saucier. Seventeen-year-old Aspen Horgan, from Norman Johnston Secondary Alternate Program, had never touched a bass prior to getting involved with Be in the Band. 'It's just surreal, honestly,' Horgan said backstage before performing. 'I'm extremely nervous … Bluesfest is such a massive thing.' Horgan's band, The Tragically Dustins (an ode to their teacher, Dustin Wenzel), performed 'Coffee Girl' by The Tragically Hip with a cool and calm demeanour under the warm glow of purple, red and white spotlights. 'I was very in the moment,' Horgan said, adding that the sizable crowd ended up fading into the background. Rosy Tlem, also 17, was one of the lead vocalists from Notre Dame High School who sang a rendition of Rihanna's 'Umbrella' and Bruno Mars' 'Finesse.' While on stage, Tlem and the two other vocalists often took each other's hands as they called on the audience to sing along. 'It's do or die,' Tlem recalled after the show. 'This is my secret desire to perform in front of people.' For some of the young artists, the music programs gave them an opportunity to grow closer to their fellow musicians, as well as nurture a passion for music. 'I've had kids tell me that the program transformed their lives. Saved their life, even,' Marsden said. 'Music is really important to me. I really wanted it to be important to the people who are involved, too.'

However, the brand has been quietly in the works since 2023, when the singer stepped out in white sneakers emblazoned with 'SKYLRK' on the sole. Bieber isn't new to the fashion scene — he was previously a co-founder of Drew House, which he launched in 2019 with stylist Ryan Good. However, in April, the entrepreneur confirmed he had cut ties with the label. 'I Justin Bieber am no longer involved in this brand,' he wrote over a screenshot of Drew House's Instagram account. 'Drew House doesn't represent me or my family or life,' he added. 'If your [sic] rocking with me the human Justin Bieber don't waste ur money on Drew House.' Now, he's on to his next style venture. Justin Bieber coughs up millions to Scooter Braun after financial dispute — but the singer still scored a win: report

Justin Bieber has settled his financial dispute with Scooter Braun and the result is costing the singer a pretty penny. The 'Sorry' singer and his former manager reached a settlement agreement on Thursday that calls for Bieber to cough up millions in owed funds to Braun's Hybe company, per TMZ. Reps for Bieber and Braun did not immediately respond to Page Six's requests for comment. As we previously reported in May, an independent audit conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) revealed that Bieber owed Braun more than $8,806,000. At the time, a source exclusively told us the money owed came from a loan Braun made to Bieber over debt accrued due to his canceled 2022 'Justice' tour. 'He stepped in to help him,' the insider shared. Bieber's last minute cancellation of his tour reportedly hurt his pockets. After he accepted a $40 million advance from AEG (the company backing the tour) and backed out, the company asked him to repay them $26 million of the money that was already loaned to him. That's when Braun stepped in and paid Bieber's $26 million debt to AEG through his Hybe company. According to the terms of their settlement agreement reported by TMZ, Bieber was asked to pay back the $26 million owed. Braun will also be repaid half of the $11 million that he alleged Bieber owed for various unpaid commissions over the years. Bieber's growing debt seems to have coincided with recent reports of him experiencing a list of financial woes. Bieber — who has an estimated net worth of $300 million — sold his music catalog for $200 million in 2022. In May, it was reported in a TMZ Investigates documentary 'What Happened to Justin Bieber?' that the singer was forced to sell his catalogue because he was on the verge of 'financial collapse.' 'Justin said, 'I gotta sell it now.' And he sold it in December. That's how broke he was,' said TMZ executive producer Harvey Levin in the documentary. It also appears likely that the debt played a role in his distant relationship with Braun — who, at one point, shared a close relationship working with the singer for 15 years. Last month, Braun revealed his relationship with Bieber, 31, is currently not 'the same as it was.' 'I think there comes a point where I understand he probably wants to go on and show that he can do it,' the 43-year-old said. 'I think you get to a point as a man where you want to show the world you can do it on your own,' Braun continued. 'And I completely respect that. 'I think at this point, that's what he's doing,' he added. 'Myself and everyone from the old team is rooting for him.'
