Marseille's Adrien Rabiot Up For Sale After 'Extremely Violent' Bust-Up In Dressing Room
Marseille had called the players' behaviour "unacceptable" in a brief club statement published on Tuesday.
Marseille president Pablo Longoria announced on Wednesday that the club has decided to place star player Adrien Rabiot and English winger Jonathan Rowe on the transfer list due to an 'extremely violent" dressing room altercation.
'What happened was extremely serious and violent, something I've never encountered before," Longoria told AFP in an interview.
'We had to make a decision because what occurred went far beyond what is acceptable in a football club, as it would in any organisation."
The incident took place following Friday's 1-0 defeat away to Rennes in their opening match of the French Ligue 1 season, a game Marseille lost to a stoppage-time goal after playing for an hour with an extra man.
Marseille condemned the players' behaviour as 'unacceptable" in a brief club statement released on Tuesday.
'I wasn't in the dressing room, but the staff who were told me it was incredible, violent, aggressive, and went beyond any limits," said 39-year-old Spaniard Longoria, who has been Marseille president since 2021.
The incident is a significant setback for the 1993 Champions League winners, who finished second in Ligue 1 last season to qualify for Europe's elite club competition.
'Roberto De Zerbi has been coaching for 13 years, and (sporting director) Medhi Benatia has been in top-level football for 22 years. I started out in professional football 20 years ago," Longoria added.
'I think we all have enough experience to say we have never seen anything like it in a dressing room… Even in the worst punch-ups, there are rules. Not in this case."
England Under-21 international winger Rowe spent last season on loan at OM from Norwich City, and that deal was made permanent in the summer.
The 30-year-old Rabiot, who has 53 caps for France, joined Marseille at the beginning of last season as a free agent after leaving Juventus.
He had an outstanding first campaign at the Velodrome, but Marseille have not succeeded in persuading the former PSG midfielder to extend a contract which will expire at the end of this season.
However, Longoria insisted that the decision to put Rabiot up for sale was not related to his contractual situation.
'The decision was very clear. It protects the club as an institution and it protects our season going forward. It is not negotiable for me to be president of a club where there are no rules," Longoria added.
'Honestly, as a club, we are the victims in this situation. A fight like this is unheard of in the world of football."
Marseille's second game of the Ligue 1 season will be at home to newly-promoted Paris FC on Saturday.

Alcaraz, Djokovic on US Open collision course
Carlos Alcaraz was put on a US Open collision course with Novak Djokovic on Thursday as the draw for the men's and women's singles tournaments were revealed. Alcaraz, Djokovic on US Open collision course Spanish star Alcaraz faces a potentially awkward route to the final where a possible showdown with world number one Jannik Sinner could be waiting at Flushing Meadows. Alcaraz, who could supplant Sinner as world number one depending on results in New York over the next fortnight, will have to hit the ground running starting from Sunday. The Spaniard faces big-serving American hope Reilly Opelka in the first round. If the tournament follows seedings, the 2022 US Open champion will meet former world number one Djokovic in the semi-finals. Djokovic, who is chasing a record 25th Grand Slam title, will begin his campaign against Learner Tien in the opening round. Seventh seed Djokovic leads Alcaraz 5-3 in previous meetings, and defeated the Spaniard over four sets in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open earlier this year. The 38-year-old Serbian icon's form remains a mystery though heading into the final Grand Slam of the season. Djokovic has not played since his run to the semi-finals at Wimbledon last month. Top seed and defending champion Sinner meanwhile will begin his campaign against Czech Vit Kopriva in the opening round. The 24-year-old Italian, who retired during the first set of his Cincinnati Open final with Alcaraz earlier this week, could meet Britain's Jack Draper in the quarter-finals. In the women's singles draw, world number one and defending Aryna Sabalenka will open her campaign against Switzerland's Rebeka Masarova, the world number 109. Second seed Iga Swiatek, the reigning Wimbledon champion and 2022 US Open winner, is in the other side of the draw and begins her bid for a seventh Grand Slam singles title against Colombia's Emiliana Arango. Swiatek's path to the final could see her meet 2023 US Open champion Coco Gauff in the semi-finals. Gauff faces Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round. Elsewhere, Venus Williams faces a daunting task if she is to prolong what could be her farewell US Open appearance beyond the first round. The 45-year-old US tennis icon was granted a wild card into the first round of the tournament, some 28 years after she reached her first US Open final as a 17-year-old in 1997. Williams faces Czech 11th seed Karolina Muchova in the first round. rcw/dmc This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

US Open draw: Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff in same half; defending champ Sabalenka, Rybakina on quarterfinal collision course
Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka has been handed a tricky draw at the US Open, as the women's singles draw for the 2025 edition of the Grand Slam was revealed on Thursday. She had overcome American Jessica Pegula in the final last year to claim her maiden US Open title, and became the first woman in eight years to hold both the hard-court majors in a single season. The No. 31 seed heads into the tournament on the back of a title-winning run at the Citi Open last month. No. 9 seed Elena Rybakina is Sabalenka's projected round-of-16 opponent. The Kazakh had defeated her in straight sets last week at the Cincinnati Open. If Sabalenka can navigate safely past her quarter, she could potentially meet Pegula in the semis. The 2024 finalist, who reached the semifinals of the new-look US Open mixed doubles alongside Jack Draper, will face Egypt's Mayar Sherif in the first round, and has No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva as her projected quarterfinal opposition. The bottom half has two former US Open champs, Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek. The Pole, who narrowly missed out on the US Open mixed doubles title alongside Casper Ruud, as the pair went down to Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori on Wednesday, will start her quest for a second major in New York against Colombia's Emiliana Arango. She could run into No. 29 seed Anna Kalinskaya in the third round and No. 13 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the fourth round, who beat her in the Miami Open last year. Wimbledon finalist and No. 8 seed Amanda Anisimova could be her quarterfinal opponent. Gauff, on the other hand, has Australian Open champion Madison Keys, the No. 6 seed Naomi Osaka, in the same quarter.
