
For Formula E, ‘sustainability is at the heart'
In the world of professional sports, winning is everything.
But Formula E, which hosted the second Tokyo E-Prix this weekend at Tokyo Big Sight, is a notable exception. Founded with a mission of promoting electric vehicles, Formula E has always placed sustainability at the forefront of its raison d'etre.
Now in its 11th season, those efforts are paying off.
Since its fifth season, Formula E's carbon emissions per race have dropped by 41% thanks to improved efficiency, and the series is on track to meet its science-based targets in line with keeping global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. In 2020, it became one of the first major sports organizations to reach net zero and is one of the best-performing sporting organizations in the area of sustainability.
'We've accepted since the get-go that Formula E is not single-minded, but actually like a bicycle organization,' said Julia Palle, Formula E's vice president of sustainability.
'We're using, in essence, the platform of motorsport, but sustainability is at the heart. It runs through the vein of the organization.'
Culture shift
Drivers don't reach elite levels of motorsport without being ultracompetitive and Formula E's 22 drivers are no exception. Among that number are former Formula One drivers like Saturday's race winner Stoffel Vandoorne, Jean-Eric Vergne and Sebastian Buemi, who is also a four-time World Endurance Championship champion with Toyota Gazoo Racing.
So to create a championship with a twin focus of competition and sustainability was no easy feat, and it didn't happen overnight.
'It takes time to build a culture,' Palle said. 'It definitely took us a good couple of seasons before we could sense that the culture was really implemented and running through not only Formula E as a business but also the ecosystem.'
'For the teams and the partners joining the series, obviously the electric element is very important and they understand that sustainability is at the core of the series.'
That jives with the sentiments of team bosses, who say that sustainability is never far from the forefront, even when championships and titles are on the line. That's in large part because sustainable operations are not optional and are part of the rules and regulations that govern Formula E's 11 teams.
'In some sports, winning is the most important thing and teams can self-destruct for the purpose of winning. They'll do whatever it takes. But in Formula E, we do that but within the environment that we created,' said Sylvain Filippi, Envision Racing's managing director.
'Everybody is aligned,' said Nissan team principal Tomasso Volpe about the team's sustainability initiatives. 'We give ourselves targets to improve in different (key performance indicators) year after year. And so far we have improved in all of them.'
For the Yokohama-based electric car pioneer, the benefits of participating in Formula E go beyond promoting the brand to a large audience, with the tech developed for its race team often making its way into road cars. For example, the development of more efficient batteries for the race car has helped the company make major improvements in the battery life for its commercial vehicles.
Those kinds of improvements will become even more important in the coming years — by 2030, Nissan is aiming to have most of its car lineup be electric.
For a team not backed by a major automaker such as Envision Racing, which is owned by Chinese renewable energy firm Envision Energy, the purpose is a bit different and comes down to raising awareness about key technologies that can help improve the health of the planet.
'We're not here to sell cars,' said Filippi. 'We're here to promote sustainability, fight against climate change and get people excited about solutions that will help the climate. That's really what it's all about.'
EV headwinds
Global growth in electric vehicle sales has slowed, but experts are still optimistic about a continued rise in uptake in the coming years. In 2024, more than 20% of the new cars sold worldwide were electric, according to the International Energy Agency.
Growth has been particularly slow in Japan, where hybrid vehicles remain the far preferred option. Last year, sales of electric cars experienced their first decline in the country in four years, falling 33% to just under 60,000 cars.
For Palle, those headwinds only reinforce the sport's mission to spread electrification to new markets, Japan included.
This year marked the second Tokyo E-Prix, and Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike noted the importance of building momentum toward net zero when the race was first announced in 2023.
'I think we're racing in Tokyo because we have this shared vision with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government of achieving the net-zero transition,' Palle said. 'And so they are using us basically as a platform to support the EV campaign and the strategic approach that they are promoting to their citizens.'
The opportunity of a home race was not lost on Nissan's Volpe. Showcasing Nissan's prowess in electrification for a home crowd was an exciting opportunity, particularly because this year's event featured two races following strong ticket demand for the debut event in 2024.
'I hope that this big attendance helps to change the perception of electric vehicles,' he said. 'Because when you see electric vehicles fast and racing ... we hope that this makes people consider electrification as a key technology to be excited about when they drive a normal car.'
Model for others
Formula E scored 81 out of 100 in the 2023 Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sports (GSBS) report, tied with German soccer club Borussia Dortmund for the top spot. The average score within the sports industry was 47.
'Sustainability is literally lived in Formula E, and the entire team's dedication was felt throughout the audit process,' said GSBS CEO Christian Hartmann.
So beyond Formula E's goal of influencing consumer habits, the sport also sees itself as a model for other organizations to follow.
'It's very important to keep in mind that in sustainability, there's no such thing as competition,' Palle said, adding that Formula E regularly shares its challenges and successes with other organizations.
'The reality is that every sport thinks it's very unique, so some things might not be able to be scaled up, but it's very, very clearly defined as part of our mission to share and evangelize whatever has been successful,' she said.

Accidents raise concern over how Japan vets foreign drivers
At the Samezu Driver's License Center in Tokyo, there used to be dozens of foreign nationals making lines early in the morning to convert their driver's licenses from their home countries to Japanese ones. They first had to take a written test — places were offered on a first-come-first-served basis, though applicants can now make reservations beforehand — followed by a driving test on another day. This process is much simpler, and even easier, than getting a driver's license from scratch in Japan, which costs around ¥300,000 ($2,100) and takes months of lessons and practice at a driving school. Recent motor accidents involving foreign drivers have put a spotlight on just how lax the driver's license conversion system really is, prompting authorities to consider tightening the rules . In one case, a Chinese man was arrested over an alleged hit-and-run that injured four elementary school boys in Saitama Prefecture. Police suspect the driver had been intoxicated at the time. In another, a Peruvian man was taken into custody for allegedly driving on the wrong side of the Shin-Meishin Expressway in Mie Prefecture, crashing into multiple vehicles and fleeing the scene. A review of the National Police Agency's traffic accident data shows that the number of accidents caused by foreign nationals increased from 6,725 in 2015 to 7,286 in 2024 — an 8% rise. Among the changes being proposed are a more rigorous written test to better assess applicants' knowledge of Japanese traffic laws and a stricter verification of applicants' addresses — requiring a resident registration and barring the use of temporary accommodations. Keita Ueno, the owner of Kiki Driving School and an instructor who supports both foreign nationals and Japanese citizens returning from abroad in getting their driver's licenses converted, is one of those worried about the current lax system. 'The content they (foreign drivers) learn is only about a third of what Japanese people learn,' Ueno said, adding that he also thinks the driving test is too easy. 'In terms of safety, since the test is only conducted within a closed course, while it does assess driving skills to some extent, I don't think it truly evaluates whether someone can drive safely on actual roads in Japan.' Ueno also highlighted the language barrier and different norms that exist between countries — traffic signs could carry different meanings, and driving standards might vary significantly. For instance, in some countries, drivers might not yield to ambulances or stop for pedestrians at crosswalks. The concept of priority roads — in which vehicles on the main road have the right of way — is also often ignored in some countries, with drivers merging without checking — a practice that can lead to accidents, particularly in Japan, where it is strictly observed, he said. Ueno said his driving school offers a program for students in which they can return after obtaining their licenses for lessons conducted on actual roads, but since it's not mandatory, hardly anyone does it. | Karin Kaneko The process of converting a foreign driver's license in Japan is relatively straightforward. Applicants must provide a valid license from their home country, a Japanese translation, a passport, and proof that they have held the license for at least three months in the issuing country. Holders of licenses from some countries are exempted from the driving test. The written test consists of 10 yes-or-no questions on traffic rules — such as whether drivers in Japan drive on the right side of the road — and applicants must get seven correct answers to pass. The test has a passing rate of 90%. The driving test, however, is more challenging, with a passing rate of only 26%, according to the Foreign Drivers Support Association. NPA data shows that foreign license conversions have been on the rise in recent years. Last year, there were 75,905 conversions, a significant leap from the 33,687 recorded in 2015. The conversion is especially popular among Chinese nationals, with various videos providing tips for passing the tests and explanations on the necessary application forms posted on social media RedNote. To drive in Japan, either a Japanese driver's license or an international driver's license is required, the latter of which is not issued in countries that include China, Vietnam and Brazil. For nationals of such countries, converting their driver's licenses into Japanese ones provides them the opportunity to also obtain an international driver's license, which then allows them to drive in other countries as well. Ueno of Kiki Driving School said he offers a program for his students in which they can return after obtaining their licenses for lessons conducted on actual roads, such as driving together on highways or through the city. 'But since it's not mandatory, and it's not part of the official rules, hardly anyone actually takes up the course,' he admitted, saying that there was only so much he could do. 'As driving schools, we can only operate based on the official rules. Of course, we can privately recommend people do certain things, but like I said earlier, not everyone will follow through,' Ueno said. 'That's why unless the rules themselves change, you won't get everyone to comply. When the rules are revised, we will adjust our programs according to the rules.'

In tariff talks with the U.S., Japan may have blinked
Japan might have softened its stance in tariff negotiations with the United States, backing off from its insistence that all new tariffs be removed, according to a Friday report by the Asahi Shimbun. The report indicates that Japan is instead suggesting a mechanism in which the U.S. lowers the rate on automobiles based on a country's contribution to the American auto industry — something the report claims Japan has been considering since the early stages of the negotiations. Japan has so far maintained a hard-line stance — at least publicly — in demanding that the administration of President Donald Trump remove all tariffs it has imposed since March, including 25% on auto and auto parts, 50% on steel and aluminum and 10% baseline duty on almost all other imports. If the Asahi report is true, Japan could be negotiating toward a deal akin to one signed by the U.S. and the United Kingdom last month, under which a 10% tariff will be charged on up to 100,000 British cars annually — a substantial concession from the 25% auto tariffs currently in place. But with Japan's auto exports to the U.S. totaling 1.37 million units in 2024, a quota similar to the 100,000 negotiated by the U.K. would leave Japan far from where it aimed to be. Trump has publicly said that the quota on British cars is favorable treatment for the U.K. alone and that he wouldn't do a similar deal with other countries. Ryosei Akazawa, Japan's chief tariff negotiator, is in Washington until Saturday for the fifth round of high-level tariff negotiations with his U.S. counterparts. He met with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick for about two hours on Thursday. During the meeting, the two reaffirmed their respective stances and discussed in detail about expanding trade, addressing nontariff barriers and cooperating in economic security, while confirming that both sides would continue 'intensive coordination efforts toward reaching a mutually beneficial agreement,' according to a statement from the Japanese delegation. Japan and the United States have accelerated the pace of negotiations in recent weeks, eyeing a meeting between Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Trump at the Group of Seven summit, which runs from June 15 to 17. Recent news reports have indicated that an agreement between the two countries could include cooperation in strengthening U.S. supply chains for rare earths and other materials for electric vehicle batteries, in addition to increasing imports of semiconductors and liquefied natural gas from the U.S.

Moriyasu mourns end of unbeaten run after loss to Australia
Hajime Moriyasu has already led Japan to qualification for next year's World Cup finals but there was no disguising his frustration at his understrength side losing 1-0 to Australia in Perth on Thursday. Aziz Behich's 90th-minute strike consigned Samurai Blue to a first loss to Australia in 16 years and a first defeat in all matches since February last year. "It ended up being an extremely frustrating and disappointing result," Moriyasu told reporters. "Many inexperienced players were in action, but they were enthusiastic in practice, showed their best and were prepared to fight like Japan as a team." Moriyasu has ambitions to win the World Cup next year, not so foolhardy a goal when it is remembered that he led Japan to victories over Germany and Spain at the last edition in 2022. Keen to expand his squad depth, Moriyasu rested his top players on Thursday and put out a team featuring nine players starting for the first time, three of them debutants. Japan still dominated the match with its neat possession football for all but the last couple of minutes and would have won had they produced a better end-product in front of goal. "I don't think we were technically and physically second best. Maybe, a lack of experience cost us," Moriyasu said "I wanted to see what (inexperienced) players could do in a high-pressure environment. We have to improve and expand our squad." Japan rounds out its qualifying campaign against Indonesia in Suita on Tuesday and Moriyasu said his team would be aiming to get back to winning ways. "We wanted to continue our unbeaten run, but it's too late for that now," Moriyasu said. "We'll ready ourselves the best we can to round things off with a win."
