On February 10, 2025, at precisely 11:48 PM local time, northern Morocco was rattled by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake, as reported by the specialized site, VolcanoDiscovery. The quake's epicenter was pinpointed 26 kilometers east of Souk El Arbaa du Gharb, with its tremors reaching as far as Casablanca, affecting a significant portion of the kingdom's northern region.
Morocco's susceptibility to seismic activity is attributed to its geographical location at the juncture of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. This positioning makes the country prone to frequent, and occasionally devastating, earthquakes. A notable instance occurred on September 8, 2023, when a powerful 6.8 magnitude quake struck the High Atlas region, approximately 70 kilometers southwest of Marrakech, resulting in extensive damage and numerous casualties.
As of now, Moroccan authorities have yet to release any official reports regarding potential damage or casualties stemming from the February 10 tremor. Residents in the affected areas are urged to remain alert and adhere to safety guidelines in anticipation of possible aftershocks.

Temperatures to Soar up to 43 Celsius to Hit Morocco in Several Moroccan Provinces

Rabat – A new heatwave will hit several provinces across Morocco, with temperatures expected to reach between 38 and 43 degrees Celsius. An orange level alert by the General Directorate of Meteorology said the alert concerns the provinces of Ouezzane, Guercif, Taza, Taounate, Khouribga, Fquih Ben Salah, Settat, and El Kelaa Sraghna. Morocco witnessed a series of heat waves recently, extending to several provinces across the country in the past few weeks. On June 2, weather experts said that Morocco is expected to face continued hot weather, especially in the eastern regions, as well as the southeast and central provinces. The situation is due to a thermal low-pressure system in the south and southeast of the country, which is pushing temperatures higher in those regions. The highest temperatures are expected to range between 36 and 42 degrees in he far southeast and parts of the eastern and southern desert provinces, according to experts, who also expect similar temperatures or slightly lower to hit the plains west of the Atlas Mountains, the southeastern slopes, and the eastern region. Temperatures will range between 23 and 29 degrees in coastal areas. The hot weather is coinciding with Eid Al Adha festivities, which will begin on Saturday. Morocco canceled the Eid Al Adha sacrifice ritual, but many Moroccan families will cook barbecue chicken and beef as well as other delicacies to enjoy the festive atmosphere. The reported heatwaves are expected to contribute to the ongoing drought Morocco has been witnessing for six years in a row, and temperatures are only expected to rise as the summer season is underway. Warm Weather Expected to Continue Across Morocco on Saturday

Rabat – The General Directorate of Meteorology has announced that Morocco will experience relatively warm to hot weather this Saturday in several regions. The heat will mainly affect the inland plains, the far southeast, the Rif mountains, the north of the eastern region, and the interior of the southern provinces. Local fog is expected to form along the northern and central coasts, with possible light scattered rain over the Middle Atlas and the northern High Atlas mountains, especially on their eastern slopes. Dust is likely to blow over the southeastern areas and the southern provinces, added the weather authority. In addition, moderately strong wind gusts are expected in the Tangier area and the southeast of the country. Nighttime temperatures are expected to range between 23°C and 28°C in the far south and southeast, and between 13°C and 18°C in the Atlas mountains, the central plains, and the western parts of the southern provinces. Temperatures will range from 18°C to 23°C in other regions. Daytime temperatures are expected to rise in the northwest, the Atlas region, and southern areas of the country. Several Moroccan provinces have been hit by a heatwave, bringing unusually high temperatures across many regions. The extreme heat has been accompanied by unstable weather, including thunderstorms, strong winds, and sandstorms in various parts of the country.

New Weather Alert Forecasts Thunderstorms in Several Provinces Across Morocco

Rabat — A new weather alert forecasts heavy thunderstorms, with local hail and strong winds expected to hit several Moroccan provinces on Monday. The General Directorate of Meteorology said heavy thunderstorms producing between 15 and 35 millimeters of rainfall will hit the provinces of Midelt, Boulemane, Beni Mellal, Azilal, Khenifra, Al Haouz, Tinghir, and Ouarzazate between 1pm and 10pm today. The same weather will concern Ouarzazate, Taroudant, Chichaoua, El Kelaa Seraghna, Marrakech, and Rehamna. In a range of weather forecasts, Morocco will also experience a heatwave in several provinces. On Sunday, the meteorology directorate announced that temperatures ranging between 38 and 42 degrees Celsius will hit Chichaoua, Marrakech, Rehamna, Khemisset, Youssoufia, Beni Mellal, and Fquih Ben Salah, as well as Taroudant, Tata, Es–Semara, and Azza Zag, Oued Eddahab, among other regions. High temperatures are not unusual in Morocco as the country is entering its summer season at the end of May, with temperatures expected to stay higher through August and drop by October. The stark contrast in weather patterns is evident in the lack of consistent rainfall, which has plagued agriculture and dam filling rates for six years in a row. However, recent rainfall in March brought relief, improving water reserves and ensuring potable water to sustain the country's population for at least a year and a half.
