Nationals' bat-retrieving dog Bruce gets call up to majors from Triple-A, set for MLB debut Saturday

A ballpark-tested Golden Retriever named Bruce is going to the major leagues to scoop up bats on baseball's biggest stage for the Washington Nationals after the team said he worked his tail off in the minors. Yes, Bruce is the team's 'Top Paw-spect' at 21 months old — in people years. The Nationals shared the wonderful news Tuesday that Bruce the Bat Dog has been called up, set to make his major league debut Saturday at home against the Miami Marlins — his promotion perfectly timed for Pups in the Park day at Nationals Park. Bruce was credited by the organization's front office for 'working your tail off' to earn this opportunity. The Nats said Bruce owns a 1.000 retrieving average in three games for Rochester this year and will make a fourth start in Rochester on Friday before traveling to Washington. The club unveiled an announcement for the dog's special day featuring three photos of Bruce under 'Welcome to The Show Bruce the Bat Dog' — and stated 'no rules that say a dog can't play baseball.' Triple-A manager Matthew LeCroy even brought the pooch into his office to give him the great news, and the Nationals posted video of the moment on their social media. 'Hey, I got some news for you, I think you're going to like it,' LeCroy said. 'You know last year you got called up to Triple-A, did a really nice job but we still thought we needed some work down at the lower levels. ... You did a nice job coming back to Triple-A this year, but I'm excited to tell you the front office, the GM, the president, the owners, they're excited to invite you to Nats Park for your call up to the major leagues on June 14.' More kind wishes poured in, and one fan called the move 'pawsome.' The Nationals have never seen him turn down signing a 'pawtograph.' 'Our fans and front office are always excited to see our players get promoted to the Nationals, but Bruce's promotion is a historic call-up to the big leagues that he richly deserves,' Rochester Red Wings General Manager Dan Mason said. 'Nobody makes people smile more than Bruce, and I'm sure he'll do a WOOFtastic job for the Nats! He has proven himself to be ready for the show in a very short time and has earned the phenom status that has been bestowed upon him. He'll put on a doggone great show for Nats fans on June 14.' ___ AP MLB:

Mets Named 'Great Landing Spot' for $50 Million All-Star

Mets Named 'Great Landing Spot' for $50 Million All-Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With less than two months to go before the July 31 trade deadline, MLB teams are all taking a hard look at where they are, and how they might be able to improve. Advertisement The NL-East leading New York Mets, owners of the best record (42-24) in the National League, are no exception. In an article published Tuesday, suggesting what all 30 teams must do prior to the deadline, ESPN MLB writer Bradford Doolittle suggested the Mets need to asses center field. "When the Mets acquired Jose Siri during the offseason, it seemed likely that Siri was a stopgap solution while New York waited on some of its outfield prospects to mature." Doolittle wrote. "Tyrone Taylor has logged the most time in center, but he's best suited for a complementary role. Among the prospects, Drew Gilbert is in Triple-A, but hasn't hit there so far. Thus, center is an obvious position of need for New York, which seems like a great landing spot for Luis Robert Jr." Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr. (88) catches a fly ballMatt Marton-Imagn Images Robert Jr., who signed a six-year, $50 million deal with the White Sox in 2020, has long been the subject of trade rumors, despite his uncharacteristic performance at the plate this season. Advertisement Marred in a 2-for-24 slump over his last seven games, Robert Jr. is slashing .177/.265/.281 with five home runs and 24 RBIs this season. But the 27-year old has shown flashes of greatness during his six years with the White Sox, making him one of the most coveted center fielders as the deadline approaches. In 2023, Robert Jr. hit .264 with 38 home runs and 80 RBIs, was named an All-Star, and took home a Silver Slugger Award. The center fielder also has the ability to be a menace on the base paths, swiping 90 bases throughout his career, including 21 this season. The Mets however, weren't the only team Doolittle mentioned that could make a move on Robert Jr. The San Diego Padres could be looking to upgrade in left field. Mets Make Roster Move After Francisco Alvarez News

Mets Make Roster Move After Francisco Alvarez News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Mets announced a pair of roster moves on Tuesday, including placing catcher Francisco Alvarez on the paternity list. Advertisement To replace him, the Mets recalled catcher Hayden Senger from Triple-A Syracuse, who is expected to serve in a backup role until Alvarez returns. Senger, a 24th-round pick by the Mets in the 2018 MLB Draft, made the Mets Opening Day roster this year after Alvarez suffered a fractured hamate bone in his left hand during Spring training. The former Whole Foods employee made his major league debut on March 27 at Houston. In 13 games with the big league club in March and April, Senger slashed .179/.207/.214 with one extra-base hit. New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez (4) rounds the bases on a solo home runIsaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images Alvarez, who will be out one to three days on leave, has been on fire of late, slashing .286/.310/.429 with one home run and three RBIs over his last seven games. In 29 games this season, he's hitting .255 with two home runs and 10 RBIs. Advertisement Of the team's 66 games played, Luis Torrens has started 29 behind the plate, Alvarez 27, and Senger 10. Additionally, the Mets announced the signing of veteran outfielder Travis Jankowski to minor league deal. The 33-year old played for the Mets for a brief time in 2022, hitting .167 in 43 games. Across 11 seasons with eight different Major League teams, Jankowski has hit .236 with 11 home runs, 98 RBIs and 104 stolen bases.
