Melaka to host 2025 National Cooperative Day with tourism boost
State Entrepreneur Development, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Allex Seah Shoo Chin said the celebration will include exhibitions and product sales by cooperatives nationwide. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is slated to officiate the opening ceremony.
'This year's event will be livelier as it coincides with World Tourism Day 2025, further boosting Melaka's tourism appeal,' he told reporters after the Semarak Konsumerisme programme with media practitioners.
Allex also highlighted Melaka's ongoing Rahmah Sale initiatives, aimed at easing living costs for the B40 group. From January to June, over 500 sales were conducted statewide, including Mobile Rahmah Sales and supermarket collaborations.
'Each state constituency holds at least two mobile sales monthly, alongside special programmes like 'Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat',' he said. Additional Rahmah Sales are scheduled for June 28-29 at selected supermarkets, with details on KPDN Melaka's Facebook page.

"I believe that if we talk about growth and investment without considering the floor, it will become a problem because the cost of goods is not decreasing. "Salaries must increase, even if only slightly. If they rise proportionately or more, it will not create the kind of pressure that some of our people currently feel due to the rising cost of living," he said during his closing remarks at the 2026 Budget Engagement Session held at the Finance Ministry today. Also present was Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. The session was attended by around 300 representatives from the civil service, industry, chambers of commerce, technocrats, economists, academics, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and international bodies. Earlier, in his speech, Amir Hamzah said the 2026 Budget would be the first to align with the goals of the 13MP. He said the budget, scheduled to be tabled on Oct 10, would focus on three main pillars — raising the ceiling, raising the floor, and strengthening good governance in public administration. Amir Hamzah added that in raising the ceiling, the government aims to enhance the country's competitiveness and support high-growth, high-value sectors, particularly the semiconductor industry, energy transition, and the Islamic economy.

Plans To Restructure EPF Pension Payout Plan Won't Affect Current Withdrawals
A proposed restructuring of Employees Provident Fund (EPF) accounts will introduce a monthly pension-style payout mechanism, but it will not affect the withdrawal rights of existing members, said Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying. She said the initiative, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), is intended to ensure that members' savings last longer throughout retirement, in line with increasing life expectancy. 'The new structure will take effect once members reach the minimum retirement age. Their savings will be split into two main components: flexible savings, which can be withdrawn at any time based on members' needs and income savings, which will be disbursed regularly or monthly until fully utilised. 'This proposal aims to strengthen retirement income security and support more sustainable financial management,' she added. Lim clarified that the monthly payout mechanism will apply only to new EPF members registering after the new mechanism comes into effect. However, she noted that existing contributors may voluntarily opt in to the new structure if they choose. 'The proposed restructuring of EPF accounts will introduce a new mechanism allowing part of members' savings to be allocated specifically for regular income during retirement,' she said during a Dewan Rakyat question-and-answer session on Thursday. She was responding to a supplementary question from Mordi Bimol (PH-Mas Gading), who had asked about the rationale behind introducing monthly pension-style payouts as part of the 13MP.

Govt proposes tobacco tax hike, cites health reforms
PUTRAJAYA: The government is considering a proposal to raise the tobacco tax to between 60 per cent and 70 per cent of retail prices. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the finance minister, said the proposal was consistent with the government's health reforms. "I agree with the spirit of the proposal," Anwar said when asked about the proposal. "I don't smoke, and I fully support anti-smoking campaigns." Anwar was speaking to reporters after attending the first engagement session for Budget 2026 with almost 300 stakeholders. Malaysia's current tobacco tax, which has not been revised since September 2014, accounts for about 58 per cent of retail prices. The country has no formal mechanism for periodic reviews or increases. Last week, Anwar said the government would expand its pro-health tax framework to include tobacco, vape products, and alcohol, beyond just sugary drinks, under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). He said the move was aimed at increasing revenue and driving behavioural change to reduce the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and cancer. Health reforms are expected to be a key focus in Budget 2026, which will be tabled on Oct 10, according to Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.
