CentroVilla25 opening in Clark-Fulton as a Latino community hub
CentroVilla25 will celebrate its grand opening in Clark-Fulton this weekend.
Why it matters: The Latin food hall, business incubator and community gathering space has been in the works for decades.
Leaders in Cleveland's Hispanic community want it to be a marquee attraction for the region's fastest growing minority group and a celebration of the city's rich Latino diversity.
Stop by: Events include a ribbon cutting event Friday from 10am-12pm and a ticketed gala Friday night.
The inaugural Sabor y Ritmo Festival, a free event with live music and family-friendly activities, will be 1-10pm Saturday.
Catch up quick: The $12 million project was coordinated by the Northeast Ohio Hispanic Center for Economic Development, with contributions from the city of Cleveland and individual and corporate donors.
Zoom in: The 32,000-square-foot former warehouse space has been converted into a marketplace with eight food kiosks, a rentable commercial kitchen, community gathering spaces and retail stalls for Hispanic entrepreneurs.
Between the griddles: The mercado portion has been open to the public for a few months, featuring cuisine from Venezuela, Mexico, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Puerto Rico.
💭 Sam's thought bubble: I'm a pupusa head and stopped by this week for a trio of the made-to-order stuffed griddle cakes from Antojitos Salvadoreños y Mas.

Shakira's Best Shoes and Performance Style Through the Years, Photos
Shakira has always taken her fashions to the next level. A lover of all things looks, the Colombian singer has been bringing fashion to the world of Latin music since her start in 1990. The '90s icon has had a long and illustrious career, making waves with her music and often, her provocative wardrobe. The 'Hips Don't Lie' songstress tends to perform in anything she can move in — from bedazzled bodysuits and fringy dresses to knee-high boots and sneakers. Whatever silhouette she chooses, she can be counted on to showcase an eye-catching shoe. For example, the singer donned a sparkling silver pair of calf-height boots when she performed at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL during the Copa America final in July 2024. And in March 2024, she performed at Times Square wearing a pair of black and glittery silver Air Jordan Retro 13 sneakers. Not to mention, her footwear certainly caught attention when she headlined the Super Bowl LIV halftime show in 2020 alongside Jennifer Lopez; she wore $20,000 red crystal-adorned boots designed by Daniel Jacob, aka Dan Life, as well as gold Adidas sneakers with glittering accents. Oklahoma school district slashes nearly 360 jobs in ‘streamlining measures'
An Epic Charter Schools sign advertises a location near Interstate 35 north of Oklahoma City. (Photo by Janelle Stecklein/Oklahoma Voice) Epic Charter Schools, one of Oklahoma's largest school districts, announced mass layoffs Tuesday, resulting in 357 job losses. In a move the district called in a statement, 'significant streamlining measures,' Epic has not renewed contracts for 83 teachers and 274 administrators for the next school year. That accounts for about 6% of teachers and more than one-third of administrators. It will also close its in-person learning centers in Tulsa and Oklahoma City and discontinue breakfast and lunch services. Epic Superintendent Bart Banfield said in a statement the school was committed to 'supporting those impacted with compassion and transparency.' 'We are grateful to every member of the Epic team for the passion and care they bring to our community,' Banfield said. 'This transition is about preserving and strengthening our ability to serve students for years to come.' In an email obtained by StateImpact, staff were told by Epic they would lose access to Epic systems and facilities 'shortly,' and benefits, including healthcare, which will terminate at the end of the month. Staff are also required to return all Epic property before June 9. In another staff email obtained by StateImpact, Epic said it would discontinue its Chinese and Latin course offerings and outsource and charge students $275 for German and French courses unless they have completed German I or French I during the previous school year. Epic also announced in the email students will no longer have access to one free concurrent college course. Going forward, students must purchase all courses through the Learning Fund, which is a $1,000 allocation Epic provides for each student. English language arts (ELA) and math are also affected. Epic's ELA+ will be discontinued, and Math+ will only be offered to students in grades 6-12 rather than 3-12. The courses provide live, virtual instruction to students two to three times a week. AP courses will also now be outsourced, and students' Learning Fund will be charged $100 for 'specialty' courses. The move follows cuts in October of nearly 150 Epic employees. At the time, Epic said it had overestimated the number of students who would enroll by about 4,000. This article was originally published by StateImpact Oklahoma. Urban District Market adds new international food stalls
The international food hall at the intersection between NoDa, Villa Heights and Optimist Park has a handful of new food stalls. Why it matters: Since the Urban District Market first opened in 2023, it has become a family-friendly hot spot, frequently hosting weekend events. Urban District Market is adding three new food stalls to its lineup. Mo:Mo Pasal has authentic Nepali and Indian cuisines like momo, noodles, fried rice and other street snacks. El Dorado Latin Grill specializes in Tex-Mex cuisine, featuring tacos, quesabirria and other Latin-inspired dishes, like Cuban sandwiches. Rangoon Sushi offers made-to-order sushi, poke bowls, and a variety of Thai and Burmese dishes. Between the lines: All of these food stalls are unique to Charlotte and family-owned and operated. Mo:Mo Pasal is by co-owners and siblings Sagun Aryal and Shachi Aryal, who are originally from Nepal. "When it comes to Nepali food, there are a lot of flavors, a lot of spices," Sagun tells Axios. Dig in: Momo look like dumplings but the flavor, texture and fillings are different. They come steamed, fried and pan-fried and are stuffed with chicken, cabbage, cilantro, onions, ginger, garlic and vegetables. There will be chicken and vegetarian options, and Sagun recommends the chili ones if you can handle a little spice. El Dorado Latin Grill is owned and operated by Marcela Calderon and her family, including her parents and siblings. Dig in: Expect Mexican-style dishes with a "Salvadorian touch," Calderon, who is originally from El Salvador, tells Axios. Its menu features fajitas, tacos, birria and sandwiches and burritos. Rangoon Sushi will open June 12 by owners Yoon Lwin, her husband Moe Zaw, her dad Tin Win Lwin and her mom Khin Mar Ni, who are originally from Myanmar and are all sushi chefs. Dig in: Its menu will feature raw, cooked and deep-fried sushi, poke bowls, and veggie rolls. They'll also offer Burmese specials on weekends. "For people who want to try different Asian food that's not popular, like Burmese food is not popular, they have a chance to try," Lwin said.
