Lewis Hamilton unhurt after crash in Ferrari Barcelona testing

New York Times29-01-2025

Lewis Hamilton was unhurt after he crashed his Ferrari during a testing session in Barcelona on Wednesday.
The incident happened during his latest outing as part of a three-day test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in the team's 2023 F1 car.
Small crashes often happen in testing as drivers get up to speed with a new car and learn the limits of their machinery, meaning the incident is not likely to set Hamilton back at all.

The private test has been scheduled to help seven-time world champion Hamilton get up to speed with Ferrari after his shock winter move from Mercedes.
Hamilton started life as a Ferrari driver last week, visiting the team's factory in Maranello, Italy, before taking part in a short test run at its Fiorano test track.
This week's testing in Barcelona was designed to give Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc an extended run in the 2023 car, helping their preparations for the new season.
All teams are permitted to conduct 1,000km of private test running per year with their race drivers, using a car that is at least two years old under F1's 'Testing of Previous Car' (TPC) regulations.
While Hamilton will not be able to drive his 2025 car until a short private run at Fiorano on Feb. 19, sampling the 2023 car will give him the opportunity to adjust to Ferrari's process and functions, including the steering wheel and the power delivery of the engine, as well as getting to know his new teammates.
Hamilton is expected to make his first public appearance as a Ferrari driver at the F1 season launch event at The O2 on Feb. 18, one day before getting to sample his new 2025 car for the first time.
His maiden extended outing in the 2025 car will be at F1's official pre-season test running in Bahrain, from Feb. 26-28, before making his debut for Ferrari in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on Mar. 16.

F1 fans in frenzy over return of Daniel Ricciardo in photo with Oscar Piastri

A photo of Daniel Ricciardo catching up with Oscar Piastri and Mercedes driver George Russell has offered a rare glimpse into 'retired' life for the former Aussie F1 star. Russell is coming off the back of a brilliant Canadian GP with the British star earning his first win of the F1 season, while Piastri maintained his lead in the drivers' championship having finished fourth. Both drivers have enjoyed a little time off between races with the Austrian GP this weekend. And in that time, Piastri and Russell joined 'retired' F1 driver Ricciardo and Aussie Olympian Scotty James for some Padel in Monaco. Russell posted the catch-up between friends on social media and it caused a wave of excitement with Ricciardo remaining out of the spotlight since his retirement. Fans were thrilled to see the Aussie back around the F1 driving contingent with plenty calling for Ricciardo, an eight-time F1 race winner, to make a comeback. However, it appears Ricciardo is firmly set on different ventures in retirement and has no plans to make a return. This is despite fans floating the idea he could fill in for Max Verstappen if the Red Bull driver cops a looming suspension. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇬🇧 — George Russell (@GeorgeRussell63) June 22, 2025 Red Bull boss Christian Horner could be facing a dilemma, with Verstappen facing a suspension if he picks up any more penalty points this year. The current world champion has 11 penalty points over a rolling 12-month period, and if he reaches 12 he'll cop an automatic race ban. Crucially, the two penalty points he received at the Austrian Grand Prix last year will expire at the end of June, which will drop his tally down to nine ahead of the British GP in July. Ricciardo has been floated as a potential back-up driver if such a disaster occurred, although it remains unlikely. Isack Hadjar has impressed for Red Bull's junior team 'Racing Bulls' this season, and would seemingly be the first cab off the rank to replace Verstappen. New Zealander Liam Lawson is also in the team stable with Racing Bulls, but had a disastrous two-race stint with Red Bull at the start of the season. Regardless, fans were left thrilled to see Ricciardo mixing it again with the F1 drivers as he enjoys life away from the track. Former F1 fans and even viewers of the Netflix show 'Drive to Survive' have not seen much of Ricciardo after stepping away from racing. The photo of Ricciardo smiling, and sporting a new beard, certainly delighted his supporters. Ricciardo left the F1 field after the Singapore GP last year. Since his exit, Piastri has catapulted himself into championship contention and is proving to be McLaren's best chances of winning this year. PIastri has already won five races this year, to go along with his two from last 2024. And the Aussie only needs one more win to equal Ricciardo's record. Piastri has the opportunity to achieve this feat on the weekend where he will enter the Austrian GP as one of the favourites. If Piastri is to take the world championship from four-time winner Verstappen in 2025, he will certainly need to win a string of races. Piastri is currently leading the championship by 22 points from second-placed Lando Norris, and McLaren will continue to let them race freely for the F1 title. Team principal Andrea Stella said they would seek to "preserve our parity and equality in terms of how we go racing at McLaren between our two drivers."

How Does the Chevy Corvette ZR1X Perform vs. Lamborghini and Ferrari Hybrids?

The Corvette ZR1X is huge news. Its immediate predecessor, the ZR1, had already drawn comparisons to high-dollar and high-performance models from the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini. But with the ZR1X, Corvette encroaches even further into the Italians' territory, pairing a 1,064-horsepower V8 with an electric motor contributing another 186 horsepower. The question then is how badly, really, is the ZR1X beating out the high-dollar hybrids wearing bull and horse badges? Perhaps unsurprisingly, the American comes to the fight packing the most horsepower. The ZR1X churns out 1,250 horsepower courtesy of a twin-turbocharged LT7 V8 working in tandem with a hybrid system lifted from the other hybrid Corvette, the E-Ray. The next highest number, by comparison, is the Ferrari SF90 XX. That car marries a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with a hybrid system for a total output of 1,016 horsepower. Trailing the competition (if you can call it that) is the Lamborghini Revuelto, which "only" manages 1,001 horsepower from its wicked V12 and a trio of electric motors. Since all three competitors are working more than 1,000 horsepower and all-wheel drive, it makes sense for zero to 60 mph estimates to be insanely fast. What's also unsurprising is that they're incredibly close. Car and Driver tested the Revuelto and eked out a 2.2-second zero-to-60 pass. Ferrari's official estimate for the SF90 XX, the highest-performing model of the SF90, is 2.5 seconds to complete the same deed. GM's estimate for the Corvette ZR1X is simply "under two seconds." While that requires testing, even at a somewhat pessimistic two seconds even, the ZR1X is two-tenths quicker than the Lamborghini, the next closest rival. When it comes to top speed, ZR1X is more super than the two Italian supercars. The car's top speed is an epic 233 mph, which is considerably higher than the Ferrari's 199 mph and the Lamborghini's 217 mph. The ZR1X is estimated to weigh around 4,100 pounds, smack dab in the middle of the Ferrari's estimated 3,800-pound curb weight and the 4,290-pound Lamborghini. All three models leverage insane amounts of carbon fiber and trick aero bits to keep aerodynamics in check. The Vette's front and rear brake rotors measure a colossal 16.5 inches, 0.4 inches larger than the Revuelto's front brakes and nearly an inch bigger than the SF90's 15.6-inch units. There's one last place where the Corvette ZR1X solidifies its superiority: price. You likely already know the Vette is less pricey than both the Ferrari SF90 XX and the Lamborghini Revuelto, but putting the numbers on paper (er, screen) paints an even more disparate picture. The Revuelto starts around $610,000, an obscenely huge sum. The SF90 XX commands a more egregious $890,000. Chevy hasn't released ZR1X pricing, but $250,000 seems to be the highest estimate by those in the know. Even at that price, the fastest Vette ever is less than half the cost of its closest rivals. We hate to gush, but the ZR1X outshines all rivals. Ferrari and Lamborghini are the benchmark, but are far from the only ones left blushing. The ZR1X, if GM is to be believed, is quicker than all the Porsche 911 variants and the crown McLaren jewel, the upcoming W1. The latter of which, by the way, requires parting with a ridiculous $2 million. No matter how you look at things, the ZR1X is the current king of performance cars. Bravo, GM.
