Irish motor-racing star and F2 leader Alex Dunne to drive McLaren's Formula 1 car during Austrian Grand Prix weekend

The 19-year-old from Offaly currently tops the Formula 2 championship standings, having claimed two victories so far this season, backing up his maiden victory in Bahrain with a repeat at Imola. Dunne joined McLaren's driver development programme in May last year while competing in the FIA Formula 3 championship, and is racing in the second tier championship for Rodin Motorsport. He also holds the role of Reserve and Development Driver for the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team. He will take over Lando Norris's seat for Free Practice 1 (FP1), as teams are required to give rookie drivers at least two practice outings per car during the 2025 season, with Ferrari also announcing that their junior driver Dino Beganovic will replace Charles Leclerc for FP1 at the Red Bull Ring. 'It's an amazing opportunity to be able to drive during FP1 in Austria,' Dunne said after the news was confirmed on Monday. 'I'm really looking forward to getting laps in behind the wheel of the MCL39 and supporting the team with the set-up for the race weekend ahead. 'I've been preparing well for the sessions, taking part in Testing of Previous Cars tests in the MCL60 and spending time on the simulator, which has been a fantastic learning experience. Thank you to Zak, Andrea and Alessandro for their faith in me. 'It's a great step within my development with the McLaren Driver Development Programme, and I'm really excited to join the team trackside.' McLaren team principal Andrea Stella added: 'It's great to be able to give Alex the opportunity to run in FP1, and for him to get valuable time behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car as part of his development. 'The team are pleased to be working with him more closely, and for his support across the weekend, where he will be providing useful feedback to help with the car's set-up. 'The rookie sessions are fantastic for seeing the talent of tomorrow and enabling that rare chance to get time in a current car, so we look forward to seeing him on track.'

Lewis Hamilton completes third F1 test stint as Ferrari times vs McLaren revealed

Lewis Hamilton has completed his third testing stint since joining Ferrari on Wednesday – with just over a month until his F1 debut for the Scuderia. The 40-year-old Briton, who drove the 2023 SF-23 car in Fiorano a fortnight ago and Barcelona last week, took part in a Pirelli tyre test on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Driving a modified version of last year's SF-24 car to fit the narrower 2026 tyres, Hamilton posted a fastest lap time of 1:15:93 over 87 laps on Tuesday. This time was just over a tenth-of-a-second quicker than Charles Leclerc 's fastest time over 86 laps – 1:16:06. However, both times were short of Lando Norris ' fastest lap in the MCL60 (McLaren 's modified 2023 car), which was 1:15:21 – though Norris did rack up 159 laps throughout the day. Hamilton and Leclerc shared duties once again on Wednesday, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri in the cockpit for the full day. Pirelli are yet to release today's timings. It is another box ticked for Hamilton, though, as he acclimatises to a new team following 12 years and six world titles with Mercedes. The seven-time F1 world champion did crash the SF-23 in Ferrari's behind-closed-doors test in Barcelona last week, though was said to be 'absolutely fine' following a shunt in sector three of the 4.6km circuit. It follows a trend of Hamilton crashing in pre-season tests ahead of his first season with a new team, as he did for McLaren in 2007 and Mercedes in 2013. This week, tyre manufacturer Pirelli's programme was focused on the development of their slick tyres, ahead of new engine and chassis regulations coming into force next year. The precise details of the drivers' compound use and run plans were not disclosed. Hamilton could take part in more private TPC (Testing of Previous Cars) sessions – likely to be at Ferrari's track in Fiorano – before the official pre-season test in Bahrain on 26-28 February. Ferrari officially launch their 2025 car – the SF-25 – on Wednesday 19 February, but will reveal their livery at the 10-team season launch event at The O2 Arena in London on 18 February. Hamilton's first race for Ferrari will be the season-opening Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne – a venue he has tasted success at two times – on 16 March. The race was confirmed this week to have a 3pm local start time (4am GMT).

Lewis Hamilton unhurt after crash in Ferrari Barcelona testing

Lewis Hamilton was unhurt after he crashed his Ferrari during a testing session in Barcelona on Wednesday. The incident happened during his latest outing as part of a three-day test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in the team's 2023 F1 car. Small crashes often happen in testing as drivers get up to speed with a new car and learn the limits of their machinery, meaning the incident is not likely to set Hamilton back at all. Advertisement The private test has been scheduled to help seven-time world champion Hamilton get up to speed with Ferrari after his shock winter move from Mercedes. Hamilton started life as a Ferrari driver last week, visiting the team's factory in Maranello, Italy, before taking part in a short test run at its Fiorano test track. This week's testing in Barcelona was designed to give Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc an extended run in the 2023 car, helping their preparations for the new season. All teams are permitted to conduct 1,000km of private test running per year with their race drivers, using a car that is at least two years old under F1's 'Testing of Previous Car' (TPC) regulations. While Hamilton will not be able to drive his 2025 car until a short private run at Fiorano on Feb. 19, sampling the 2023 car will give him the opportunity to adjust to Ferrari's process and functions, including the steering wheel and the power delivery of the engine, as well as getting to know his new teammates. Hamilton is expected to make his first public appearance as a Ferrari driver at the F1 season launch event at The O2 on Feb. 18, one day before getting to sample his new 2025 car for the first time. His maiden extended outing in the 2025 car will be at F1's official pre-season test running in Bahrain, from Feb. 26-28, before making his debut for Ferrari in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on Mar. 16.
