Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, the IUCN World Conservation Congress will be hosted for the first time in the GCC region, in the UAE in Abu Dhabi. Organised by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the environmental event will take place from 9-15 October 2025 at ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi.
The UAE President's patronage of the IUCN Congress confirms the UAE's interest in protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity as an essential part of its vision for a sustainable future, in line with His Highness's directives. The UAE's hosting of the IUCN World Conservation Congress reflects its commitment to supporting international environmental dialogues and initiatives, providing a global platform that gathers leaders, experts, and decision-makers to collaborate on effective solutions to the most pressing environmental challenges, while further enhancing the UAE's leadership position in nature and biodiversity conservation, and species protection.
The UAE was awarded the opportunity to host the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi following a comprehensive review process conducted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Council in 2023. The successful bid was submitted by the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), in collaboration with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). Subsequently, MOCCAE signed the Host Country Agreement on behalf of the UAE Government.
The IUCN Congress is expected to attract in excess of 10,000 participants from more than 160 countries around the world, including government leaders, environmental specialists, scientists, and experts.

Protecting our natural ecosystems – both on land and at sea – is of utmost importance to the UAE. Held once every four years, the IUCN World Conservation Congress brings together several thousand leaders and decision-makers from government, civil society, business, and academia. It is the highest decision-making body of the union, where accredited delegates from IUCN members convene. One of its key mandates is the election of the next term's President, Treasurer, Regional Councillors, and Chairs of Commissions, who will comprise the IUCN Council.
IUCN has more 1,400 member organisations including states and government agencies at the national and subnational levels, a diverse range of NGOs, indigenous peoples' organisations, scientific and academic institutions, and business associations.
The UAE has full IUCN membership. The MOCCAE is a state member, while the Mohamed Bin Zayed Conservation Fund, Emirates Environment Group and Emirates Nature-WWF are NGO members. The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, the Dubai Desert Conservation Centre (DDCR), International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC) and Al Ain Zoo are government members – with all the aforementioned members making up the UAE IUCN National Committee, chaired by Her Excellency Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, who is also the Regional Councillor for IUCN in West Asia.

MAJRA – National CSR Fund, in collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), hosted an interactive session as part of its ongoing 'Impact Lab' initiative to explore notable developments within the domains of climate action and sustainability in the UAE. The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi Successfully Disperses 6.5 Million Native Seeds Across its Nature Reserves Using Drones
To enhance vegetation cover and rangelands across the emirate of Abu Dhabi As part of its continued drive to adopt cutting-edge technologies that support biodiversity in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has completed its 2025 native seed dispersal programme in nature reserves. The initiative, conducted in partnership with UK-based environmental restoration company Dendra, used custom-designed drones to carry out aerial seeding. The Agency continues to advance its drone-based seeding programme through the expertise of a dedicated team comprising seasoned professionals and promising young Emirati talent. The team carries out comprehensive studies and precise assessments of vegetation cover within the targeted reserves, taking into account soil characteristics and their suitability for the native plant species selected under the programme. Commenting on the initiative, Ahmed Al Hashmi, Executive Director of the Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Sector at EAD, stated: 'We successfully implemented one of the largest drone-based seeding operations ever undertaken in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, within a notably short timeframe. This achievement is in line with Abu Dhabi's Climate Change Strategy and covered a total of 320 hectares of habitat, many of which were seeded for the first time.' He added: 'This initiative underscores the Agency's commitment to harnessing advanced artificial intelligence tools in support of environmental sustainability and reflects our leadership's ongoing vision to safeguard natural ecosystems through the integration of innovation and technology in pursuit of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.' A total of 6.5 million seeds from native species were dispersed, including Samar ( Vachellia tortilis ), Moringa ( Moringa peregrina ), Rumex ( Rumex limoniastrum ), Cleome ) Cleome pallida (, Desert cotton ( Aerva javanica ) and Panicum ( Panicum turgidum ) in the mountainous slopes and wadi habitats of Jebel Hafit National Park. As for the Sand dunes ecosystems of Qasr Al Sarab Nature Reserve, seeds of Fire Bush ( Calligonum polygonoides ), Rimth ( Haloxylon salicornicum ), Tricholaena ( Tricholaena teneriffae ), Panicum ( Panicum turgidum ), and Agriophyllum ( Agriophyllum minus) were distributed. The use of drones enables the Agency to cover extensive areas in significantly less time compared to traditional manual seeding methods. This technology also facilitates operations in remote and difficult-to-access terrain without the need for vehicles, thereby reducing environmental disturbance to fragile ecosystems. Seeding marks only the beginning of the process. EAD will continue to monitor the designated areas to assess vegetation response over time, employing AI-powered sensors and advanced monitoring technologies to track the growth of shrubs and native plants. This initiative builds upon the natural rangeland study programmes launched by the Agency in 2024 and are continuing into 2025. These efforts aim to establish a comprehensive, field-based assessment of current vegetation conditions, serving as a benchmark for evaluating the effectiveness of grazing regulations and other environmental management measures across the emirate of Abu Dhabi. Egypt possesses 30 natural reserves on 15% of its land area: Environment Minister
File- Egypt has recorded flocks of white storks in the natural reserves of South Sinai- press photo CAIRO – 22 May 2025: On the International Day for Biological Diversity, observed annually on May 22, Egyptian Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad stated that Egypt has 30 natural reserves covering 15 percent of its land area. Fouad pointed out that 13 of these have been developed for ecotourism, offering activities such as diving and mountaineering. In comments to Extra News, the minister added that Egypt has taken serious steps toward preserving biodiversity, which means maintaining the natural balance between land, sea, plants, and living organisms. The minister said that some Egyptian reserves, such as Wadi El-Hitan and Ras Mohammed, have joined the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas. Egypt plays a leading role in implementing the international agreement to increase the percentage of protected areas globally to 30 percent by 2030, which is consistent with Egypt's recently launched National Biodiversity Plan, Minister Fouad continued. International Cooperation on Biosphere Protection On May 14, 2025, Fouad, along with Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Ayman Ashour and Chair of the Egyptian National Commission for UNESCO, held a meeting with Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo, Nuria Sanz, and the accompanying delegation from the organization's regional office. The meeting discussed possible means of cooperation to support the activities of The Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme of UNESCO, and aimed to strengthen the partnership between the two parties, which will contribute to the conservation of natural resources, the protection of biological and cultural diversity, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Infrastructure and Ecotourism Development The Environment Ministry has worked to re-introduce nature reserves by developing the reserves' infrastructure, including roads, administrative buildings, and information centers, said Minister Fouad in a meeting with representatives of the Marine Environment Protection Association on April 30, 2025. She added that 93 trained environmental supervisors have been appointed across the Red Sea and South Sinai reserves. Efforts have also been made to promote the reserves and create investment opportunities in the ecotourism sector, permitting the private sector to invest in locations within natural reserves where activities, such as diving and mountaineering, take place, Minister Fouad stated.
