Giant wooden animal puppet parade wows city

Yahoo13 hours ago
A parade of life-sized wooden safari animal puppets has wowed crowds in Manchester as it passed through the city.
The Herds aims to symbolise the animals' flight from climate disaster, according to The Walk Productions, which is behind the large scale public art.
The elephants, giraffes, antelope, and lions are made from upscaled or recyclable cardboard and plywood.
They arrived in the city just after 18:00 BST and will move to Heywood and Leigh in subsequent days.
The animals began their 12,400m (20,000km) journey in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in April and are now moving north through European towns and cities.
Volunteers in each area take on the role of puppeteers.
The parade made its way through Cathedral Gardens, Corporation Street and Market Street.
Rochelle Dodson and Eva Barker were impressed by the puppetry.
Ms Dodson said: "It was wonderful - the movement was realistic especially with the fact they are made out of cardboard.
"The giraffes eyes really looked at you."
Ms Barker added: "I thought it was great – not sure I was aware of a message."
Danielle who came with her daughter Poppy to watch the spectacle said: "I thought it was great - I just like the intricate details on the chimpanzees."
She said it was so entertaining but she thought the eco-friendly message was not particularly clear.
"I think they should have had some information or someone telling that story – if you look it up it is a beautiful message," she said.
"It was really funny there was a guy with a dog on his shoulder who said 'this is great but what is it all about?'"
Poppy added: "They are really big and the puppet people are so hard working."
Debbie, who came with her three children, Patti, Gracie and Kit was amazed by the experience.
"The puppets were incredible - I really liked the way they were moving," she said.
"When they came towards us it was unbelievable."
Daughter Pattie added; "I thought they were really cool - I really liked the zebras."
Once The Herds leaves Greater Manchester, it will next travel through Scandinavia to the Arctic Circle.
The Herds parade marked the start of Manchester International Festival, which first took place in 2007.
The Walk Productions also created in 2019 the journey of Little Amal, a 12ft high puppet of a Syrian refugee child.

Eurovision Organisers Speak Out After Broadcasters Hold Discussions About Israel's Involvement

Eurovision organisers have confirmed that discussions were held with its participating broadcasters this week about whether Israel should remain part of the competition moving forward. Israel's involvement in Eurovision has long been a controversial issue due to the political situation in the Middle East. However, in the last few years, some fans have been calling for Israel's expulsion from the competition due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. In the lead-up to this year's event, many public figures associated with the contest – including then-reigning winner Nemo from Switzerland – urged organisers to ban Israel from Eurovision, similar to how Russia has been excluded since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. National broadcasters for Iceland, Ireland, Slovenia and Spain have all raised questions about Israel's participation in Eurovision in the last few months. The Palestine-led BDS movement has also called for a boycott of the competition for the last two years. Earlier this week, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) held a meeting with its participating national broadcasters in London, to discuss several issues relating to the Eurovision Song Contest, including whether Israel should be invited back in 2026. A statement released on Thursday said: 'At today's EBU General Assembly, Members held an open and constructive discussion on the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) and the increasingly complex global context in which it takes place. 'The Assembly was a chance to celebrate the success of ESC 2025 - not just in terms of its record-breaking reach and engagement but in terms of its cultural resonance and ability to foster inclusivity, creativity, and a sense of belonging on a world stage. 'But of course, despite its extraordinary success, the Eurovision Song Contest, like many other events, is not immune to the pressures of global politics. Questions around participation have become increasingly sensitive and multifaceted, and our Members hold a wide range of perspectives on these issues which they were able to express in detail today.' The statement continued: 'Members had a constructive exchange of views. There was a shared understanding that this is an unprecedentedly complex situation and there is a wide diversity of opinions. 'Members also expressed their support for the work of the Israeli public broadcaster Kan and its independence, noting the pressure it is repeatedly experiencing from the Israeli government.' 'To help us navigate the current landscape, a former senior TV executive has now been invited to lead a structured and in-depth dialogue with our Member broadcasters in the coming weeks,' the EBU's spokesperson concluded. 'They will engage with Directors General and other stakeholders to gather insights on how we manage participation, geopolitical tensions, and how other organisations have approached similar challenges. They will report back with recommendations this autumn.' According to the English-language Israeli news site Ynet, the debate on Thursday lasted around 90 minutes, with Austria, Germany and Switzerland's broadcasters being the only ones to vocally back Israel's participation next year. It was also claimed that the BBC had 'called to avoid a vote' on the matter, and 'instead supported further dialogue'. In the end, no vote took place, although so-called EBU 'sources' apparently told Ynet that 'further discussions will be inevitable' if the war continues. Eurovision previously said: 'We understand the concerns and deeply held views around the current conflict in the Middle East. 'The EBU is not immune to global events but, together with our members, it is our role to ensure the Contest remains – at its heart – a universal event that promotes connections, diversity and inclusion through music. 'We all aspire to keep the Eurovision Song Contest positive and inclusive and aspire to show the world as it could be, rather than how it necessarily is.' They added: 'As a reminder, the EBU is an association of public service broadcasters, not governments, who are all eligible to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest every year if they meet the requisite requirements. It is not our role to make comparisons between conflicts.' F2P Friday: STRANGE AINTIQUITIES

Welcome to this week's installment of F2P Friday, where we highlight our favorite Free-2-Play games. New video games hit the market daily from indie developers, and sometimes, hidden gems fall through the cracks. This is where we dig for you and feature a new F2P game we know you will enjoy every week. This edition, we puzzle out solutions and charms to help the people of Undermere solve their problems in Strange Antiquities . RELATED: Check out our F2P Friday archives Strange Antiquities Congratulations on your new role as Apprentice Thaumaturge at Strange Antiquities. You show promise – a sharp mind and a strong stomach – exactly what this work demands. Undermere might seem unassuming at first – a serene little town on the edge of a grand lake. But it also sits at the edge of our world and the world beyond – and it falls on us to preserve reality's frayed edge. Explore the quaint and gloomy town of Undermere, where strange goings-on and dark mysteries abound. When your master suddenly and mysteriously must leave town, you'll become the temporary custodian of a store dealing in occult antiquities. Find and identify arcane artifacts, use your collection to aid the townsfolk with their unusual problems, and remember to pet the cat. RELATED: July's Most Anticipated Video Games The Basics Let's get to the basics of Strange Antiquities by developer Bad Viking. This team, a duo of brothers from the UK, is also the creative team behind another amazing occult puzzle game, Strange Horticulture. Both games are set in the same town, Undermere, where strange events haunt the grim Victorian residents. You can play this demo without playing Strange Horticulture first; the games are connected but not sequential. Strange Antiquities is a meticulous investigative puzzle game that punishes rash decision-making. There is no time limit for producing the correct charm, so don't be tempted to push an item that doesn't meet all the criteria. If you feel like you are missing pieces to the puzzle while reading through the texts or investigating objects around the store, try looking at the map. Sometimes, narrative clues will be included in conversations or letters that indicate where on the map to search; again, look with caution. I found that playing with a mouse made selecting, sorting, and investigating items easier than with the trackpad on my laptop. RELATED: 15 Co-Op Games Announced in June 2025 Why Should I Play? So why should you play Strange Antiquities ? This game is the perfect blend of occult curiosity and cozy whimsy. It is set in a town full of interesting characters who all rely on you for arcane solutions and guidance. There is a karma system and a branching narrative choice system that isn't fully available in this preview, but does add interest to the gameplay. Currently, only the demo is available, which contains the first two days of running the shop. That is enough time to introduce you to some of the troubled townsfolk and fall in love with Jupiter (the cat), but not enough time to solve any of the mysteries.
