Los Angeles tour bus crash leaves 1 dead, 32 hospitalized on Mother's Day
Mother's Day took a fatal turn for a driver in Los Angeles after their SUV became disabled on a major highway and then was hit by a tour bus, police said.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said it is investigating the two-vehicle crash that left one person dead and sent 32 others to the hospital early Sunday. CHP said the crash happened shortly after 5 a.m. on Highway 60 West when a Nissan Pathfinder became disabled for unknown reasons, blocking traffic and causing the tour bus to collide with the SUV.
"As a result of the impact, the Nissan Pathfinder became fully engulfed in flames, trapping the lone occupant," a spokesperson for CHP said.

Footage from the scene shows the tour bus, which was traveling from the Morongo Casino to Koreatown, sustained significant front-end damage as well as a shattered windshield.
One passenger on the tour bus, Joe Runnel, told KTLA that he was thrown from his seat to the floor and that people were "begging for mercy" in the moments after the crash.

"I was thrown from the backseat of the bus to the floor about three or four seats down," Runnel said. "Glass was on me … there was a lot of hollering."

Another driver who witnessed the crash told the outlet that "the situation unfolded so quick" and that "everyone tried to stop, but there was just not enough time."
"It happened so quickly … a lot of chaos and then just red lights," he said. "It's going to be very [catastrophic], especially because it's Mother's Day … it's very sad that it had to start like this," the witness said.

The westbound 60 Freeway will be closed between Azusa Avenue and Hacienda Boulevard indefinitely, police said. However, officers were able to re-open some lanes as of 7:30 a.m.

14-year-old dirtbiker killed in Riverside County crash
A 14-year-old boy was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Riverside County, officials confirmed Friday. It happened on Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol, in the intersection of Krameria and Gardner avenues in Woodcrest. CHP Riverside officers responded to a 6:05 a.m. call of a crash involving a dirt bike and a Toyota 4Runner, and arrived to find the teenager dead at the scene. Details are limited, but the preliminary investigation revealed that the 14-year-old dirtbiker was driving westbound on Krameria Avenue, approaching the intersection at an unknown speed. Los Angeles protester arrested for allegedly lighting CHP car on fire
A Los Angeles man was arrested on Friday after allegedly setting a California Highway Patrol patrol vehicle on fire during downtown ICE raids protests, officials confirmed. It happened on Sunday, according to CHP, after more than 1,000 demonstrators took over the 101 Freeway lanes. Officials said that the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Adam Palermo, was seen throwing rocks at CHP officers and vehicles from an overpass. After throwing rocks, CHP said Palermo took out what was only described as 'an object' and lit it on fire before dropping it onto a CHP patrol vehicle below him. The object landed on the cruiser, causing it to go up in flames. 'To extinguish the fire,' stated CHP, 'officers had to put themselves in danger from thrown rocks and bottles.' CHP detectives assigned to the case later on spoke with members of the public and identified Palermo as the suspect. 'The California Highway Patrol will not tolerate attacks against our officers under any circumstances,' said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. 'Our personnel put themselves in harm's way to protect the public, and anyone who targets them with violence will be identified, pursued, and held fully accountable under the law.' On Friday morning, the detectives arrested Palermo outside his home and ultimately booked him for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer during the June 8 protest. After his arrest, CHP said detectives searched his home and found more evidence of the crime. 'Violent and deliberate attacks on law enforcement will not be tolerated in California.
