Forensic science students at Chaminade University put their skills to the test by collecting evidence, analyzing and documenting a crime scene.

The mock crime scene was posed as an exam for students, where they had to determine whether the scene was a homicide or a suicide.
Students used yellow caution tape, investigative tools and official CSI gear to complete the task.
'I bring this exam outside the campus so they can feel a real-life experience, even if it's a mock crime scene,' said Carlos Gutierrez, Assistant Professor of Forensic Science. 'They can interact with the public, people can ask questions, so they can feel the reality to be in a real crime scene.'

Gutierrez said 12 students take the class every semester to prepare for a mandatory 135-hour internship.
Following the course and the completion of their undergraduate years, Chaminade University said about 86 percent of students land science-related positions.
'They can work in any forensic lab, they can join the police, they can join an affiliate agency as well,' Gutierrez added.
Chaminade officials said students have landed jobs with the Honolulu Department of the Medical Examiner, police departments in Hawaii and Guam and the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command's Central Identification Laboratory.

Abandoned puppy found in Mass. euthanized, police investigate as animal cruelty
Police have been investigating an animal cruelty case in which two puppies were found abandoned in Randolph earlier this month, according to police. One of the puppies was in such bad condition that veterinarians decided to euthanize it. On the evening of Aug. 1, a passerby found two puppies abandoned along a walkway between the Martin E. Young Elementary School on Lou Courtney Drive and Barbara Road, Randolph police said in a press release. The passerby quickly notified police, and the puppies — a male and female around 11 weeks old — were immediately taken to VCA Weymouth. 'Unfortunately, shortly after arrival, it was determined that due to the extent of the condition of the male puppy, the most compassionate recourse was to provide him with a peaceful passing,' police wrote. Randolph police are now asking the public to help them identify 'the individual(s) responsible for dumping these helpless dogs,' the police department wrote. Investigators believe the suspects are likely basement breeders who live in Randolph or a neighboring community. The puppies are of mixed breed — possibly some sort of shepherd or hound mix — and have 'a distinct black tail,' police said. The female puppy is not currently up for adoption. Randolph police are asking anyone who thinks they may have seen suspicious activity in the area on or around Aug. 1 or who knows of home breeders in the area that breed similar dogs to contact them. Those with information about the case are asked to call Detective Kevin Aldred at 781-963-1212, police said. Elgin police rank 6th for DUI arrests, per AAIM, falling from last year
The Elgin Police Department ranked in the top 10 law enforcement agencies making the most drunk driving arrests in 2024, though the ranking dropped from last year's second-place berth. The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) released the results of its Illinois DUI Arrest Survey for 2024 that showed Elgin ranked number six. Elgin had 245 DUI arrests, the survey showed. 'Each arrest reflects the hard work and dedication of the officers who put themselves on the line every day. Their efforts help protect lives and prevent families from experiencing the pain of a crash,' said Rita Kreslin, AAIM executive director, in a press release. Last year, Elgin Police Department made 282 arrests to achieve the second-place spot. The change could be a result of different factors, like people using rideshare services to avoid drinking and driving or people staying at home more, said Elgin Sgt. Hector Gutierrez, the department's public information officer. EPD does 'no refusal' campaigns during holidays, including Memorial Day weekend. They allow police to work with prosecutors to obtain a seach warrant against drivers who refuse to take a breathalyzer, blood or urine test during a drunk driving stop or investigation, according to the Kane County State's attorney's office. A campaign is coming up for Labor Day weekend, Gutierrez said. 'We are going to be looking for intoxicated drivers on the roadway to keep everyone safe,' he said. 'Hopefully those (campaigns) resonate with people, and they are taking safety precautions,' Gutierrez said. AAIM's survey showed Det. Paul Dublinski had 22 DUI arrests in Elgin last year. Dublinski is a veteran officer who routinely has the highest number of DUI arrests in the department. 'We have officers who really care about getting DUI drivers off the roadway and making the streets safer for the community,' Gutierrez said. AAIM is an Illinois-only citizen activist group founded in 1982 by victims of drunk driving. Its survey, which started 35 years ago, had an 81% response rate from nearly 700 police agencies around the state in 2024. The survey showed the top 10 police departments were: Aurora remained the first in the state for the second year in a row. Naperville had one of the largest increases in arrests from 2023 to 2024, 51.8%, along with West Chicago, which had a 31.2% increase. The sheriff's department reporting the most DUI arrests was Winnebago County with 387. The top five list included McHenry County with 189 arrests, Cook County with 155, Lake County with 136, and Will County with 133. 'Enforcing DUI laws is demanding but essential work. The entire AAIM organization sincerely appreciates the officers' daily sacrifice, dedication to public safety, and efforts to save lives. We deeply value their constant commitment,' Kreslin said, in the release.

Kansas City police investigating 2024 death of 2-month-old baby as homicide
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 2-month-old baby boy in Kansas City died last fall, and police say the child's death is now being investigated as a homicide. The child, identified by Kansas City police as Mateo Rideout, died on Nov. 5, days after he was injured and rushed to Children's Mercy Hospital. Kansas City police were first notified of the incident about 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26, 2024. According to police, officers were called to Children's Mercy Hospital to investigate an assault that reportedly occurred on Northwest Milrey Drive near Northwest 80th Street in the Northland. Hospital staff members told police that the baby was brought in and had life-threatening injuries. Police did not disclose how the child was hurt. One person was detained for questioning at the time. Then, on Nov. 5, 2024, the baby died as a result of the injuries, two months after he was born. The incident was being investigated as a suspicious death until detectives received an official autopsy report form the medical examiner's office in June, ruling the death a homicide.
