KAIMANA BEACH, Hawaii (KHON2) — If you thought you stumbled across a crime scene at Kaimana Beach on Friday, April 20, don't worry — it was not real.
Forensic science students at Chaminade University put their skills to the test by collecting evidence, analyzing and documenting a crime scene.

The mock crime scene was posed as an exam for students, where they had to determine whether the scene was a homicide or a suicide.
Students used yellow caution tape, investigative tools and official CSI gear to complete the task.
'I bring this exam outside the campus so they can feel a real-life experience, even if it's a mock crime scene,' said Carlos Gutierrez, Assistant Professor of Forensic Science. 'They can interact with the public, people can ask questions, so they can feel the reality to be in a real crime scene.'

Gutierrez said 12 students take the class every semester to prepare for a mandatory 135-hour internship.
Following the course and the completion of their undergraduate years, Chaminade University said about 86 percent of students land science-related positions.
'They can work in any forensic lab, they can join the police, they can join an affiliate agency as well,' Gutierrez added.
Chaminade officials said students have landed jobs with the Honolulu Department of the Medical Examiner, police departments in Hawaii and Guam and the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command's Central Identification Laboratory.

Residents want sustained enforcement on Diamond Head homeless
DIAMOND HEAD, Hawaii (KHON2) — The issue of homelessness around Diamond Head continues to frustrate neighbors and beachgoers, even after a major sweep in April. Over 100 cleared from Diamond Head during homeless sweep KHON2 checked it out and found some troubling signs that the problem has not gone away. Kuilei Cliffs Beach Park looks like any other scenic spot on Oʻahu at first glance, but this corner of paradise was also home to a large and messy homeless encampment until June 5. 'And I've been writing letters and and sending in photos and I mean, I think people from all over the world come here. They shouldn't have to see that,' said Ann, a Diamond Head beachgoer. Ann and others who visit the beach said they have been pleading for help for weeks, but it was not until KHON2 reached out to HPD and the Department of Land and Natural Resources on Thursday that action was taken — the encampment was cleared out on Friday. Neither agency would say who made it happen — HPD told KHON2 that it was DLNR responsibility and DLNR said to ask HPD. There is concern that someone cooking dinner could provide the spark that lights up the whole mountainside with the summer heat drying out the slopes. A joint sweep with the State removed most of the homeless living around Diamond Head in April. 'There were as many reported 120, 140 people on the Hill. There's 12 there now, seven on top, five below. We're going to zero. We're going to zero because of the fire safety issues that are posed there,' said Department of Community Services director Anton Krucky. Diamond Head Beach is still troubled even though some areas are mostly cleared. Folks are still living in the cliffs and along the shoreline — neighbors said it simply is not safe. 'It's a very dangerous place for anybody really, alone. Male or female, there's a lot of people on drugs here. You can tell. And, there's no police presence here,' said Arleen Velasco, Diamond Head Neighborhood Board vice chair. Velasco said the solution is not just clearing tents, it is sustained enforcement. 'If people knew there was a police presence and they were going to get tickets and fines. I think they'd go somewhere else,' said Velasco. 'You know, I used to come to Diamond Head all the time, for many years, and walk the beach, but now I go somewhere else because I don't like to walk past it. It's. Vehicle fire shuts down portion of S. King Street
HONOLULU (KHON2) — A portion of S. King Street was closed due to a vehicle fire, the Honolulu Police Department said in an HNL Alert. The public was first notified about the fire at approximately 3:30 p.m. on June 6. Traffic was being rerouted to Isenburg Street. Officials are urging the public to avoid the area. Hillsborough County deputies make arrests in shooting that injured teen
The Brief Deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office have made arrests in connection with a shooting that injured a teenager on Wednesday. Detectives said they found evidence connected to the shooting inside a bedroom belonging to a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old. A 38-year-old man was also arrested for driving with a suspended license when deputies said they found him driving the vehicle linked to the suspected shooter. PROGRESS VILLAGE, Fla. - Two teenage felons have been arrested in connection with a shooting that injured a teenager on Wednesday. The backstory According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, deputies went to the area of South 81st Street and Fir Drive shortly before 12:40 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls regarding a shooting. Upon arrival, deputies found a teenager suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. When they pulled the vehicle over, deputies said the driver, Antonio House, 38, was taken into custody for driving on a suspended license. According to HCSO, a Glock .40 caliber handgun recovered from inside the home was ballistically matched to the casings recovered at the scene of the shooting.
