OFWs, families to benefit from expanded services at OFW Hospital

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has announced improved health services for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families through the continued upgrade of the OFW Hospital in Pampanga. DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac and Acting Medical Chief Dr. Patrick Louie Maglaya on July 31 presented the hospital's new facilities and medical equipment designed to meet the unique needs of OFWs and their dependents. Cacdac emphasized that all services remain free for OFW-patients, affirming the government's commitment to providing accessible and specialized health care under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s administration. The OFW Hospital, the only one of its kind in the country, now offers upgraded radiology services, including a new MRI machine and digital mammography. It also added laboratory tests such as hemoglobin (HBA1), drug testing, and aqua electrolyte analysis. Additional upgrades include a complete pulmonary function test, cardio exercise test, treadmill stress test, and holter monitoring for heart assessments. The hospital is currently seeking Level 2 accreditation from the Department of Health, which will allow full use of its ICU and expanded services. Also in progress is the construction of the OFWH Cancer Care Center, expected to be completed within President Marcos' term. Once operational, it will offer cancer care and hemodialysis services for OFWs and qualified dependents. As of June 2025, the OFW Hospital has already provided services to over 50,000 OFWs and their families.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi marks another milestone with life-saving double lung transplant of Guatemalan patient

1 Aug 2025 00:37 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has cemented its position as a global leader in complex medical care with the successful double lung transplant of a 66-year-old patient from Guatemala. Performed by a multidisciplinary team from the hospital's Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute and Integrated Hospital Institute, the life-saving procedure is a powerful testament to the hospital's commitment and track record of delivering world-class care across borders. This milestone underlines Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's dedication to expanding access to advanced, high-quality care accessible on a global scale. Oscar Romero López Guillén, who had been battling end-stage pulmonary fibrosis, arrived in Abu Dhabi after exhausting medical options in South Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the United States. Dependent on oxygen 24 hours a day and struggling with even the simplest physical tasks, Oscar faced an uncertain future until he discovered Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's transplant with pulmonary fibrosis in 2016 in Guatemala after a prolonged cough, his condition progressively worsened over nearly a decade. Despite consultations in multiple countries and facing challenging issues like citizenship requirements and limited transplant capabilities and facilities, Oscar remained hopeful. Finally, in late 2024, the Cleveland Clinic global referral system connected him to Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, offering him a new lease on life through the hospital's renowned Lung Transplant Georges-Pascal Haber, Chief Executive Officer at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, said, 'Oscar's journey is a powerful reminder of what Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi stands for, providing world-class care to patients across the globe. Our multi-organ transplant programme, one of the first in the region, is more than just advanced medical excellence; it's about expertise, compassionate care, and the extraordinary impact of the UAE's Hayat organ donation programme. We are honoured to be a place where both local and international patients can find hope and a second chance. At Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, we are committed to ensuring that access to life-saving treatments knows no borders.'Dr. Usman Ahmad, Chair of Thoracic Surgery and Lung Transplantation, Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, said, "Upon arrival at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Oscar's lungs were barely functioning. Remarkably, he had endured such severe limitations for nearly a decade. After a thorough evaluation by our multidisciplinary lung transplant team, he was listed and underwent a double lung transplant a few weeks later. Today, just weeks after the surgery, Oscar has regained full function, with normal oxygen levels, excellent exercise capacity, and a normal quality of life. His recovery is a testament to the expertise of our team and our ability to provide life-changing care."Upon receiving Oscar's medical records, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's multidisciplinary team, comprising surgical lung transplant specialists and other critical care experts, immediately studied his case in detail. The family was swiftly enrolled in the lung transplant programme, and within weeks, they received the life-changing news that a matching donor organ had become available. Less than a week later, Oscar was admitted to the hospital and began preparations for his early 2025, after ensuring there were no complications, Oscar underwent a successful double lung transplant surgery. His recovery was swift and remarkable. Just 10 days after his admission, Oscar was discharged, breathing on his own, and ready to begin the next chapter of his life. Explaining his condition, Dr. Andres Obeso, Staff Physician, Thoracic Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, said: 'Oscar arrived at our doors speaking a different language, from a different continent, but the language of healing and helping is human and universal. When we reviewed his case, we found severely impaired lung function, yet no other major comorbidities. That combination, along with his resilience, made him a strong candidate for transplant. A successful lung transplant can add years to a patient's life. In Oscar's case, the surgery, intensive care, and post-transplant rehabilitation were all coordinated seamlessly by our multidisciplinary team. His journey is a testament to what's possible when world-class expertise meets an unshakable human spirit. These are the stories that inspire our mission to provide the best care, no matter where a patient comes from.'Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is home to one of the region's first and most comprehensive lung transplant programmes, and one of the few worldwide that consistently welcomes international patients. Backed by an expert multidisciplinary team, the programme delivers end-to-end care, from in-depth pre-transplant evaluations to surgery and long-term recovery patients like Oscar, the hospital's dedicated International Patient Services team plays an essential role, seamlessly managing everything from travel and visa arrangements to accommodation and care coordination. This integrated approach ensures every patient's journey, from diagnosis to recovery, is as smooth and stress-free as hospital recently reported a 35% increase in international patient volume in 2024, with more than 10,000 international patient visits. Renowned for its excellence in complex care, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi saw increased interest in its advanced services, mainly in the areas of cardiology, ophthalmology, neurology, and urology. Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Bahrain, and the US are the top five countries from which international patients are travelling to Abu Dhabi in who now lives in the UAE for follow-up care, expressed his gratitude for the treatment that gave him a second chance, 'When I arrived at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, I felt like I had come to Heaven on Earth. The level of care, the kindness of the nurses, the professionalism, it was something I had never experienced before.''For years, I lived attached to an oxygen tank 24 hours a day. It wasn't just physically exhausting; it was a constant reminder that I could stop breathing at any moment. It was frightening, isolating, and incredibly expensive.'What amazed me most was how quickly everything happened. Throughout my long journey, no other hospital could provide an organ in time, but within weeks of arriving here, I was already preparing for surgery. Today, I can breathe, walk, and live again. I thank God, and I thank the incredible team at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi who made this miracle possible,' Oscar added. Oscar's story is a reflection of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's expanding role in shaping the UAE's future as a global hub for complex care. As a centre of excellence in specialities such as adult cardiac surgery and stroke, the hospital continues to push the boundaries of what's possible in medicine. Powered by its collaboration with the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), M42, the broader Cleveland Clinic network, and international partners, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is delivering world-class outcomes and advancing the nation's vision of becoming a destination for medical innovation, excellence, and deeply human-centred care.

PureHealth delivers strong H1 2025 results with AED 13.6bln in revenue and AED 1.03bln in net profit

Abu Dhabi – PureHealth Holding PJSC ('PureHealth' or 'the Group') (ADX Symbol: PUREHEALTH), the largest healthcare group in the Middle East, today announced its financial results for the six-month period ended 30 June 2025. The Group delivered a 9% year-on-year revenue increase to AED 13.6 billion in H1 2025, driven by broad-based growth across both its Healthcare (Care) and Insurance (Cover) verticals. EBITDA rose 8% year-on-year to AED 2.3 billion in H1-2025, while net profit reached AED 1.03 billion, up 2% year-on-year. As part of its continued evolution and transformation of acquired assets, PureHealth is streamlining its operating model built around two core verticals: Care and Cover. This structure brings together all Group businesses under each vertical, with 'Care' encompassing Hospitals, Procurement, Diagnostics, and Technology, while 'Cover' includes the Group's Insurance operations. The new model strengthens PureHealth's ability to deliver coordinated, value-driven services by aligning care delivery with insurance offerings to streamlining operations across all levels of the health ecosystem. Furthermore, as PureHealth is the only entity in the MENA region which has both healthcare and insurance services under one umbrella, this new streamlined approach gives more transparency and clarity for investors to understand the vertical performance of the group. H.E. Kamal Al Maazmi, Chairman of PureHealth, said: 'PureHealth's strong performance in the first half of 2025 reflects the profound ambition driving our transformation, building a global, future-ready healthcare ecosystem that is both technologically advanced and deeply human. By aligning innovation with national priorities and international partnerships, we are not only expanding access to care, but we are also reshaping how health is delivered, experienced, and sustained.' Shaista Asif, Group Chief Executive Officer at PureHealth, commented, 'We delivered solid growth in the first half of 2025 across both our Care and Cover verticals. Our entry into the Property & Casualty segment through Daman strengthens our ability to offer comprehensive, multi-line coverage. We continue to enhance our services through AI-powered solutions that make healthcare more intelligent and efficient. As we expand globally, our focus remains on synergies, transformation of the assets, and delivering better health outcomes within communities we operate.' Financial & Operational Highlights Across Healthcare (Care) and Insurance (Cover) Verticals: The Care Vertical was the largest contributor to revenue during the period, accounting for 72% of the Group's top-line at AED 9.8 billion in revenue, up 7% year-on-year in H1 2025. This growth witnessed across several segments, including Hospitals, Diagnostics, and Technology. Performance in UAE and UK was driven by a 13% increase in outpatient volumes to 4.4 million visits, and a 7% rise in inpatient volumes to 108,000 visits across the Hospitals vertical. In the UAE, this growth was supported by expanded service offerings, increased specialist capacity, and growing demand across SEHA and SSMC networks. In the UK, Circle Health saw increased patient volumes and further strengthened its position through the successful bolt on acquisition of Fairfield Independent Hospital in the Merseyside. The acquisition will expand inpatient capacity and available medical staff, which will ultimately support Circle Health's continued growth in high-demand regions. While Procurement revenue decreased 5% year-on-year to AED 2.6 billion in H1 2025, Rafed has continued expansion of its supplier network. Its recent appointed role as the exclusive distributor for the Abu Dhabi government's Unified Purchasing Programme, has since strengthened its position as a central enabler within the Group's healthcare delivery model. PureLab recorded a 19% year-on-year increase in total testing volume, reaching 16.9 million tests. This strong performance was largely fuelled by enhanced contributions from SEHA and the successful integration of the SSMC laboratory into the PureLab network. The Technology Services reported exceptional growth, with revenue increasing 170% year-on-year to AED 367 million in H1-2025. This was driven by the continued expansion of PureCS, which deployed digital infrastructure and clinical technology solutions across the Group's entities. The Pura app surpassed 620,000 users during the period, while the Group's broader technology backbone is enabling predictive analytics, digital patient engagement, and AI-enhanced care delivery. The Cover vertical revenue increased 14% year-on-year to AED 3.8 billion, supported by an 8% rise in Gross Written Premiums (GWP) to AED 4.9 billion in H1-2025. Growth was further fuelled by new business, driven by expansion into underpenetrated segments and geographies. Membership increased 6% year-on-year, reflecting the Group's compelling value proposition and strong customer retention. PureHealth's balance sheet remains strong, with a Net Debt to EBITDA ratio of 1.4x, providing the Group with ample flexibility to pursue future M&A opportunities and invest in strategic organic growth initiatives across its global healthcare platform. PureHealth repaid AED 1.85 billion in bank debt ahead of its 2027 maturity and currently has no bank debt. Strategic Developments PureHealth acquired Hellenic Healthcare Group (HHG), the largest private healthcare provider in Greece and Cyprus, strengthening its presence in Europe and expanding its specialised care footprint. Closing of the transaction is subject to EU regulatory approvals. Circle Health Group completed the acquisition of Fairfield Independent Hospital in Merseyside, adding inpatient capacity and expanding Circle's footprint in high-demand regions across the UK. Daman has received approvals and licensing to enter the Property & Casualty insurance segment, marking its evolution into a comprehensive, multi-line insurer. It also launched new insurance offerings targeting underpenetrated segments and continued scaling digital claims and onboarding systems. SEHA, through Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), signed a strategic partnership with Cincinnati Children's Hospital, one of the top ranked US children's hospital, to advance paediatric clinical services, research, and training in Abu Dhabi. Rafed was appointed as the exclusive distributor for the Unified Purchasing Programme under the Abu Dhabi government mandate, reinforcing its central position in the national procurement ecosystem. OneHealth introduced TurnKey Solutions and Home Dialysis Project, supporting PureHealth's expansion toward home-based care and specialised treatment pathways. Outlook PureHealth is advancing its organic growth strategy through targeted investments in high-margin, complex medical capabilities, the development of clinical centres of excellence, and operational efficiency enhancements enabled by digital health and AI. In parallel, PureHealth continues to expand its international footprint through focused M&A, including the acquisition of Hellenic Healthcare Group (HHG) in Greece and Cyprus. The Group's expansion strategy is supported by a balanced capital allocation framework, combining reinvestment in core strengths with a commitment to shareholder returns. -Ends- About PureHealth: PureHealth is the largest healthcare group in the Middle East with an ecosystem that challenges lifespans and reimagines health spans.
