Thompson looks to diversify from mining into other industries, including tourism

CBC28-02-2025
Northern Manitoba's largest urban centre is looking to diversify and rebrand, shifting the perception of Thompson as a mining town to instead encourage people to think of it as a northern hub for services like education and health care, as well as a tourism hot spot.
Business leaders, politicians and other experts gathered to discuss the future of Thompson and the north at this week's Linkages conference — a conference about the future of northern Manitoba organized by University College of the North in the city.
"Thompson's been here for 60 years, and when it was actually first built, it was built as a mining town," Mayor Colleen Smook said in an interview.
"I think more importantly is Thompson as being a hub of the north," which would require expansions for hospitals and education facilities to become a service centre to the rest of northern Manitoba, she said.
While the city itself has a population of around 13,000, it's a service hub for many other northern Manitoba communities with a combined population of around 60,000, according to the mayor.
The city is also looking to expand beyond mining into other industries, like cold-weather testing, aviation and modular home construction, while using its natural resources and culture to draw more tourists in, said Smook.
"We've talked with different people, with whether it even be building modular homes to go out to the different communities [in the north]," she said.
"Right now, you get homes that are built down south," which aren't always suited for the northern environment, said Smook.
The mayor added she isn't dismissing the impact of mining on Thompson's economy, but she wants to look at options for when that industry faces a downturn.
Vale SA, the parent company of Thompson's nickel mining operation, announced a potential sale of the operation earlier this year, raising concerns about its future.
Vale owns two mines and a mill in the city, but over the years, the number of jobs at the mine has shrunk to about 900 employees currently. Many jobs were lost when Vale shut down its smelter — which extracts base metal out of ore — in 2018. Now, the raw ore is shipped off to other provinces to be processed.
Though what would become the city of Thompson was first built up after the discovery of a major nickel deposit in the 1950s, it wasn't officially incorporated as a community until 1967.
Smook said she's proud of where Thompson has come over the past 60 years, but said she wants to see even more diversification. The community has the resources required for new industry, she said.
"We have all kinds of land mass up here. We have the hydroelectric [generating capacity] right up here. So you've got cheap power, fresh air, clean air," said Smook.
Tourism an opportunity for Thompson: speaker
Ashley Dunlop, who is the director of talent and workforce development for Economic Development Winnipeg and runs a tool that helps match job seekers with employers, attended this week's conference to learn more about labour needs in Thompson.
She said she was impressed with the resources available in the northern city, which is the sixth-largest in Manitoba.
"This is a big town — there's a hospital, there's an airport, there is [University College of the North]," she said.
"All of those things need staff. All of those staff need places to live. All of those staff need something to do on the weekend. All of those staff need someone to sell them a car or fix their snowmobile."
While mining is still a big part of Thompson, other industries are catching up, mainly education, health care and hospitality, said Dunlop.
That diversification is what attracted Eric Termuende, a leadership consultant from British Columbia, to come to Thompson to speak at the conference.
Termuende said he was inspired by the pride northern Manitobans have for the north, and thinks Thompson should try to replicate the work of communities like Churchill in embracing tourism as a major industry.
"Tourism is another opportunity" for Thompson, he said. "I think Churchill has done an incredible job from branding themselves on a global stage as a tourism opportunity and tourism destination."
Smook said tourism has been growing in Thompson.
Other attendees at the conference also said they would like the region to be a destination for adventure and eco-tourism, taking advantage of the unique northern culture and the region's pristine wilderness.

Latin Metals Expands Para Copper Project, Peru

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Aug. 13, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Latin Metals Inc. ('Latin Metals' or the 'Company') - (TSXV: LMS) (OTCQB: LMSQF) is pleased to announce that its 100% owned subsidiary Zafiro Mining S.A.C. has acquired additional mineral rights contiguous to the Para copper project ('Para' or the 'Project') in southern Peru. This acquisition expands the Project to the south and secures coverage over key drill targets (Figures 1 and 2). Key Takeaways: New Land Secured: Strategic acquisition of 300 hectares completes consolidation of 100%-owned Para Project Drill Targets Defined: Multiple walk-up porphyry copper targets identified Next Step Permitting: Drill permit process will start; Latin Metals is seeking an option partner to fund and operate Tier-1 Location: Para is situated in Peru's Coastal Copper Belt with access to infrastructure and port facilities Low-Cost Acquisition: New claim acquired for US$20,000 with no royalty obligations Exploration data collected by Latin Metals, combined with historic data purchased from Vale Exploration Peru S.A.C. ('Vale') (previous news release NR25 -02, dated February 10, 2025), a wholly owned subsidiary of Vale Canada Limited, has been instrumental in defining multiple high-priority drill targets across the Para Project (Figures 1, 2, and 3). Vale previously completed target definition and secured drill permits but never conducted drilling. 'Our exploration team initially identified the Para project in 2023 through analysis of regional geochemical data,' stated Keith Henderson, President and CEO. 'The integration of Vale's comprehensive exploration data has allowed us to define clear porphyry-style drill targets. This new acquisition finalizes the consolidation of a high-quality, 100%-owned land position. We plan to initiate drill permitting shortly and are actively seeking a partner to fund and advance the project.' ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Figure 1: Results of Latin Metals' geochemical talus sampling survey showing favorable chemical zonation interpreted as centering on a porphyry system. Proximal and coincident copper and molybdenum anomalies are interpreted to overlie a porphyry system, and coincident zinc and lead anomalies are distal, surrounding the core copper-molybdenum anomalies. This pattern is typical of porphyry systems. New property acquisition shown. Figure 2: Left. Geological mapping completed by Vale together with outlines of Vale's geophysical Induced Polarization and Magnetic surveys. Right. Map combining results of geochemical rock sampling completed by Latin Metals and Vale. The cross-section A-B references Figure 3. New property acquisition shown. Acquisition Details The newly acquired 300-hectare claim lies directly south of the current Para property (Figures 1 and 2). It was purchased for US$20,000 in cash and is held 100% by Latin Metals, with no underlying royalties. Project History The Para Copper Project was previously explored by Vale Exploration Peru S.A.C. between 2013 and 2017. During this time, Vale conducted extensive groundwork, including geological mapping, collection of 282 geochemical rock samples, and completion of 18 line-kilometers of Induced Polarization (IP) geophysics, along with 44 line-kilometers of ground magnetic and radiometric surveys. Vale identified four priority drill targets totaling approximately 2,500 meters and secured a drill permit for the proposed program; however, no drilling was completed. Latin Metals acquired the project in 2023 and has since validated and expanded on Vale's work through its own systematic geochemical sampling and interpretation, confirming the presence of multiple porphyry-style targets. Figure 3: Cross section A-B. Drill holes shown were historically proposed and permitted by Vale but never drilled. Low magnetic susceptibility is interpreted as Phyllic alteration. High chargeability anomalies are interpreted to represent disseminated sulphide associated with a porphyry system. High resistivity is interpreted to result from silica within altered rocks. See Figure 2 for location of section. Para Copper Project Background The Para Copper Project is situated within Peru's Coastal Copper Belt. This belt hosts several major deposits, and is known for its favorable geology, including porphyry copper systems. The region also offers exceptional infrastructure - with highway access, nearby power lines, and proximity to Pacific ports - making it highly attractive for exploration and potential mine development. Para now spans 2,200 hectares and is 100%-owned by Latin Metals. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW QA/QC The work program at Latin Metals' Para project was designed and supervised by Eduardo Leon, the Company's Vice President of Exploration, who oversees all aspects of operations, including quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA). A total of 208 talus samples were collected from 40 cm × 40 cm sampling areas, with a spacing of approximately 300–350 meters across the property. On-site personnel meticulously collected and tracked the samples, which were then securely sealed. The first batch of 56 samples was shipped to ALS Laboratory in Lima for multi-element analysis using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), adhering to industry standards. The second batch of 152 samples was analyzed on-site using an Olympus Vanta C pXRF device. The gridded talus data integrates results from both surveys. Data purchased from Vale was collected by Vale and was not supervised by Latin Metals staff. The data includes typical and appropriate geochemical quality control data including blanks, duplicates and standards. Geophysical data was collected and interpreted by third party contractors retained by Vale and appropriate quality control was utilized. Ontario's Minister of Mines visits Sudbury

Mines Minister and Timmins MPP George Pirie was at Sudbury's Dynamic Earth on Monday. Ontario's Minister of Mines highlighted the Critical Mineral Innovation Fund during a tour of Sudbury on Monday. George Pirie spoke of the funding during a tour of Dynamic Earth, reaffirming the $15 million promised in the 2024 budget. 'We have everything the world needs in northern Ontario and this is our time to take advantage of a generational opportunity,' Pirie said. 'Sudbury, Timmins and Thunder Bay, and other regions in the north, all have a part to play in mining in Ontario.' The Critical Mineral Innovation Fund was first introduced in 2022 as part of the Critical Mineral Strategy to address supply chain challenges and strengthen the industry. Pirie also shone a spotlight on two local recipients of the fund: Vale and the Mining Innovation Rehabilitation and Applied Research (MIRARCO). Vale received $500,000 to work with MIRARCO to improve the mining giant's sustainability goals. Glen Watson, senior sustainability specialist with Vale, said the partnership provided the industry giant an excellent opportunity. 'The (fund) has allowed us to work with an excellent research facility right in our backyard and looking at waste materials as a resource instead of a liability,' Watson said. 'It has been really important in not only funding some fundamental and applied research, but also engaging in industry directly,' said Nadia Mykytczuk, CEO of MIRARCO. 'I think the biggest challenge in addressing critical minerals demand is putting pressure on the mining industry, and yet they're looking for new tools for other sources like waste, how do we go after something that had been sitting out for over 100 years and extract those critical minerals sustainably.' Pirie will also be speaking at the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities Conference.
