A man accused of stabbing 11 people at a Walmart is in Michigan authorities' custody

Global News2 days ago
Chaos unfolded at a Walmart in Michigan after a man burst into the store during a calm shopping afternoon and stabbed 11 people at random, authorities say. The attack on Saturday left six victims in critical condition and a suspect in custody.
The 42-year-old suspect entered the store shortly before 5 p.m. and used a folding knife to stab the victims, the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office said in a statement on social media. Their ages weren't immediately known.
A sheriff's deputy arrived within minutes and took the man into custody.
Steven Carter was loading his truck in the Walmart parking lot when he saw a man cut a woman's throat with a knife.
About five minutes later, the man was surrounded by shoppers in the parking lot, including one who was holding a gun. The group of five or six people kept yelling to the man 'drop the knife,' he said, and the man responded: 'I don't care, I don't care.' He kept backing away from the crowd, before someone tackled and subdued him.

'At first, it was disbelief. I thought maybe it was like a terror attack,' said Carter, who delivers customer orders from Walmart. 'And then it was fear, disbelief, shock. And that was, it was just amazing. And it all happened fast. Like he was totally subdued on the ground by the time police arrived.'

An update on the condition of the victims was expected early Sunday.
Emergency vehicles and uniformed first responders gathered in the parking lot of the shopping center that houses several other retail stores. Authorities also were seen interviewing employees, still wearing blue uniform vests and name tags, nearby as the response gave way to an investigation.
Tiffany DeFell, 36, who lives in Honor, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Traverse City, said she was in the store's parking lot when she saw chaos erupt around her.
'It was really scary. Me and my sister were just freaking out,' she said. 'This is something you see out of the movies. It's not what you expect to see where you're living.'
Munson Healthcare said via social media that 11 people were being treated at the region's largest hospital in northern Michigan. Spokesperson Megan Brown said all were stabbing victims. Six people were critical and five were in serious condition late Saturday, she said.
Sheriff Michael Shea said the weapon involved appeared to be a folding-style knife. Shea said the suspect is believed to be a Michigan resident but declined to share further details. Michigan State Police had said earlier in the day that the suspect was in authorities' custody.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said: 'Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence.'
Walmart said in a statement that it would continue to work closely with law enforcement in the investigation.
'Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured and we're thankful for the swift action of first responders,' the statement said.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said in a social media post that bureau officials were responding to 'provide any necessary support.'
Traverse City is a popular vacation spot on the coast of Lake Michigan. It is known for its cherry festival, wineries and lighthouses and is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Police release sketch of person of interest in couple's deaths in Arkansas park

Police in Arkansas released a sketch of a man they believe is a person of interest in the deaths of a couple who were attacked while on a hiking trail with their two young daughters at Devil's Den State Park on Saturday. Arkansas police released a sketch drawing of a man wanted for questioning on Monday as they continue their investigation into the murders of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41. The composite sketch, which depicts a man wearing a baseball hat, was the first image Arkansas State Police have given to the public as the search entered a fourth day. The man in the drawing was described by police as a person of interest who was seen in the park Saturday. Police also released a new photo to accompany the composite sketch of the man they are seeking to identify for questioning in connection with the fatal attack. Arkansas Department of Public Safety / Arkansas State Police Authorities have not provided a possible motive or elaborated on how the couple was killed. The couple was found dead on Saturday at Devil's Den State Park in Washington County in a suspected homicide, Arkansas State Police (ASP) said. Their daughters, who are seven and nine of age, were not hurt and are currently being cared for by family members. They did not go into further detail. Authorities have asked the public for days to report tips and urged trailgoers who were at Devil's Den on Saturday to look through their photos and videos for possible images of the suspect. They are also asking residents of the area surrounding the park to notify police if they have access to security and game camera footage. Story continues below advertisement State police said they have received 'numerous calls' but have released few details about the investigation. Police described the suspect as a white male wearing a long-sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled up, dark pants, a dark ball cap, sunglasses, a black backpack and fingerless gloves. Authorities said the suspect was seen driving toward a park exit in a black, four-door sedan with a licence plate partly covered by tape. The car, which could be a Mazda, may have been travelling on State Highway 170 or State Highway 220 near the park in a rural, wooded area, police added. 'We're just really hoping that anybody who captured any video or pictures or anything suspicious, just let us know,' state police spokesperson Nick Genty said. 'We're investigating any and all tips that we get.' The Brink family had just moved from South Dakota to the small city of Prairie Grove in northwest Arkansas, and their water had been connected less than two weeks ago, Mayor David Faulk said. Clinton Brink had been scheduled to start a job as a milk delivery driver Monday in the nearby Fayetteville area, according to Hiland Dairy, his employer. 'The family is asking for privacy during this very difficult time as they grieve and learn how to navigate this new reality. They ask that if anyone has any information at all that will help in the investigation to please contact the proper authorities immediately,' a statement released by the Brink family said, according to ABC News. 'I want to thank the public and our media partners for their support as we pursue the man responsible for this heinous crime,' said ASP Col. Mike Hagar. 'We are using all available resources to apprehend this suspect and bring him to justice.' The FBI said its Little Rock field office is assisting state police in the investigation. The bodies of the couple were taken to the state crime lab, where the manner and cause of death will be determined. Story continues below advertisement — With files from The Associated Press

Manitoba suspect faces half-dozen charges after armed, chaotic ambulance scene

A Manitoba man is in custody facing a raft of charges after a wild incident Monday morning that began in the back of an ambulance. Officers from the Winnipegosis RCMP detachment were called around 10:45 a.m. to help EMS in transporting a patient from Pine Creek First Nation to a hospital in Dauphin. Police learned that the patient had attacked a paramedic with shears, and when they arrived, he was still armed, and approached police with the weapon. An attempt to slow him down with a stun gun was unsuccessful, police said, and the man fled the scene on foot, heading north on Highway 20. A child in the back seat of the vehicle wasn't harmed during the struggle. Story continues below advertisement According to police, the man then aggressively approached officers until he was eventually stopped with a stun gun (after a non-lethal round was fired and had no effect) and arrested. A 38-year-old man now faces charges including assault, assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for dangerous purposes, resisting a peace officer, assault on a peace officer with a weapon causing bodily harm and two counts of robbery with an offensive weapon. He remains in custody and RCMP continue to investigate.

NYC shooting gunman left behind note appearing to blame NFL for brain injury

The lone shooter who killed four people and wounded a fifth at a New York City office building on Monday before taking his own life carried a note with him that appeared to blame the National Football League (NFL) for a brain injury, Mayor Eric Adams told reporters Tuesday. The attacker, 27-year-old Shane Tamura, opened fire in a Manhattan building where the NFL has its headquarters, but wound up in a different part of the building after getting on the wrong elevator. 'He seemed to have blamed the NFL,' the mayor told WPIX-TV. 'The NFL headquarters was located in the building, and he mistakenly went up the wrong elevator bank.' Tamura, who investigators believe drove from his home in Las Vegas to New York City over three days, was carrying a note that said he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease brought on by head trauma, and blamed the condition for his mental illness, Adams said. Story continues below advertisement The note was found in his pocket after he shot himself dead. A source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN that the note was written over three pages and called the letter a 'suicide note.' 'Terry Long football gave me CTE and it caused me to drink a gallon of antifreeze,' the shooter wrote, according to the source. 'You can't go against the NFL, they'll squash you.' View image in full screen This undated image provided by Las Vegas Dept. of Motor Vehicle shows Shane Tamura. Las Vegas Dept. of Motor Vehicle via AP Tamura played high school football in California nearly a decade ago, but he never played in the NFL. The late Terry Long was a former American football player who starred as an offensive lineman for eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL. Long ended his life in June 2005, at the age of 45, by drinking a large amount of antifreeze. An autopsy later revealed that Long was suffering from CTE. Story continues below advertisement Two people familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press that Tamura apologized in his note and said his brain should be studied after he died. Tamura had mental health crisis holds in Nevada in 2022 and 2024, ABC in New York reported. The shooting happened along Park Avenue, one the nation's most recognized streets, and just blocks from Grand Central Terminal and Rockefeller Center. It's also less than a 15-minute walk from where UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed last December by a man who prosecutors say was angry over corporate greed, and Monday's attack could bring further attention to security in the business world. A degenerative brain disease, CTE has been identified in athletes and military combat veterans who sustained concussions or repeated blows to the head. It can be diagnosed only posthumously through an examination of the brain. Story continues below advertisement The NFL long denied the link between football and CTE, but acknowledged the connection in 2016 testimony before Congress, and has so far paid more than $1.4 billion to retired players to settle concussion-related claims. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a memo to staff Tuesday that 'all of our employees are otherwise safe and accounted for,' following the shooting at the league's headquarters in Manhattan. Goodell praised the swift law enforcement response and honoured the NYPD officer who was killed in the attack. Employees in New York were instructed to work remotely Tuesday or take the day off, he said, and additional security will be in place. 'Every one of you is a valued member of the NFL family. We will get through this together,' Goodell said. Yuki Iwamura / The Associated Press How the shooting unfolded Surveillance video showed Tamura exiting a double-parked BMW just before 6:30 p.m. carrying an M4 rifle, then marching across a public plaza into the building. He then started firing, Tisch said, killing Islam and then hitting a woman who tried to take cover as he sprayed the lobby with gunfire. Story continues below advertisement Tamura then made his way to the elevator bank and shot a guard at a security desk and shot another man in the lobby, the commissioner said. Tamura took the elevator to the 33rd floor offices of the company that owned the building, Rudin Management, and shot and killed one person on that floor. He then shot himself, Tisch said. After the shooting, officers found a rifle case, a revolver, magazines and ammunition in Tamura's car, Tisch said. They also found medication that belonged to Tamura, she said. 1:35 At least 3 shot, including NYC police officer at Manhattan office building — with files from Global News and The Associated Press
