Huge rebuild underway for Fishermans Jetty in Mornington Harbour
Living up to its name, Fishermans Jetty has been a favourite for casting a line or berthing a boat in the harbour. Originally built between 1880 and 1885, the jetty has been repaired one too many times over the years – and by 2020, it had deteriorated so badly that it had to be closed to the public.
The Allan Labor government stepped in. As part of an $18 million investment in the 2022-23 Victorian budget, a project was developed to restore the area. It promises safe berthing access and improved public use, while supporting local tourism and creating jobs in the area. It's a vital investment – Victoria's local ports and piers contribute more than $900 million each year to regional and coastal economies through tourism, marine activities and commercial fishing.
'The new jetty will provide safer access for anglers, boaters and tourists, continuing the momentum from completed projects around Port Phillip at Altona and the flagship $53 million St Kilda Pier redevelopment,' said minister for ports and freight, Melissa Horne.
The first stage – dismantling and removing the old jetty – was completed in 2024. Construction of the new jetty began in April, with completion expected in the second half of this year.
While respecting the area's heritage, the new design will be modern, inclusive and functional to meet current and future needs – for recreational users, commercial operators and tourists alike. The rebuilt jetty will have durable timber decking for a traditional look and feel, safe water access via ladders, dedicated berthing spaces, all-abilities access to meet Disability Discrimination Act standards and improved water access for harbour users.
If all goes to plan, the new-look Fishermans Jetty will preserve an iconic part of Mornington's coastal charm, while enhancing the harbour as both a working port and a recreational haven for generations to come.

Rightmove reports that homes in Kilmarnock have sold for an average of £154,688 over the past year. Flats have been snapped up for an average of £75,868, while semi-detached properties have commanded £161,391 and terraced houses £115,793. Prices have risen by seven per cent compared to 2024 and are four per cent higher than the 2022 peak. This news comes after images show the cheapest seaside spot in England is full of abandoned £40k homes 'nobody wants'. Home to over 47,000 people, Kilmarnock's housing costs are more than five times lower than London, where the average flat will set you back a whopping £590,543. The town's blend of cultural heritage, green spaces and retail options has made it a popular choice for homebuyers. Kilmarnock is home to a wealth of cultural landmarks, including Scotland's largest Burns Monument, the Dick Institute and the Palace Theatre. The town centre boasts a range of independent shops as well as popular high street brands, reports the Daily Record. The tourism board Visit Scotland has described Bank Street as: "a charming cobbled street in the historic core, with the elegant John Finnie Street boasting one of the best examples of provincial Victorian architecture in Scotland." The board also spotlighted Dean Castle and Country Park as "a fantastic day out for all the family" and commended the Burns Monument Centre's picturesque location in Kay Park. For many locals, the town's charm and easy access are its main attractions. Andrew Reith, 41, who runs Zenith Coins and has been working in Kilmarnock for five years, said: "The town has some nice parks, and there are a few spots for public entertainment. The shopping area is quite popular, and both tourists and locals enjoy wandering around it. "What I feel is that the town could benefit from a couple of large organisations, such as factories, to create more job opportunities for people living in the area." However, not everyone shares this positive view. One local told The Express: "Many people in Kilmarnock rely on Government benefits and lack ambition and zeal to work. "Most people are looking to send their children to the schools in Troon which is around 15 to 20 minutes away from Kilmarnock and is home to some of the most affluent people in the town." While some streets offer homes priced between £75,000 and £84,000, others feature properties worth £500,000. Tracey Oakley, a property adviser with Donald Ross Residential, noted: "Kilmarnock is a huge area and it would not be right to say that the houses are cheap [everywhere] here. The town is not very far from Glasgow and has a lovely shopping centre. "The properties which are put on the market are being sold in just two to six weeks, showing its popularity among the buyers." East Ayrshire Council says the town's energy is being enhanced by regeneration initiatives. David McDowall, head of economic growth, said: "We are happy to see Kilmarnock is featuring as one of the more economical places to live. "Over the past 15 years, our Regeneration and Business Support teams have attracted investment to enable the redevelopment of the town new life into the town's conservation area." He added that Kilmarnock has "weathered the storm of closures of the mass industries such as whisky bottling, shoe making, carpet making, textiles and heavy engineering" and is now "experiencing a resurgence" with new small and medium enterprises.

The top ten most affordable cities in Australia have been revealed – and Melbourne ranked fifth

To help Aussies decide where they might want to settle, a new study has revealed the ten most affordable major cities in Australia where you have the most money to play with. There's no denying that the cost-of-living crisis is hitting Melburnians hard, but it turns out, things could be a lot worse. According to the research, Melbourne is the fifth most affordable city in the country. We'll clink a (happy hour) drink to that. To compile the rankings, researchers at StandOut Resume looked at six basic life expenses in Australia's 20 most populous cities: rent, electricity, gas, internet, grocery costs and public transport. They then compared these costs to the local median net income to reveal where your pay cheque goes the furthest – but also where it barely scrapes by. Queensland's coastal city of Townsville came out as the most affordable place to live in the country. Thanks to a higher-than-average salary of $56,858 (after income tax), locals only spend around half of their earnings (51.74 per cent) on the essentials, leaving $27,442 for saving or spending on entertainment, spontaneous getaways or dining out. Rockingham in Western Australia was the second most affordable city, where essentials take up $31,815 of the $58,702 net income, leaving a solid $26,887 to play with. Launceston followed in third, with the lowest percentage of income spent on the basics (51.71 per cent), leaving $25,664 to splash on the fun stuff. Surprisingly, Melbourne – Australia's second-most populous city – ranked as the fifth-most affordable major city nationwide. While rent, gas and public transport costs are all higher than average, our Victorian capital city has the second-highest median salary of $60,051 (second only to Sydney), helping to balance things out. This leaves $24,078 of their income to save or splurge. The other Victorian cities to rank were Ballarat (coming in seventh place) and Bendigo (coming in tenth).
