Last month, while launching Dattatreya's autobiography in Hyderabad, Reddy had called the BJP leader an 'ajatashatru' (one with no enemies). 'When Dattatreya was a Union minister, the position was taken from him and given to G. Kishan Reddy. Later, Bandi Sanjay Kumar was BJP state president but a Brahmin, N. Ramchander Rao, replaced him. So the NDA has finished all OBC leaders from South, particularly Telangana. So they should make amends and make Dattatreya the Vice President,' Reddy said. Dattatreya, who has had a long inning with the BJP having started his career with the RSS, was dropped from the Union Council of Ministers in 2017—made to resign ahead of a Cabinet reshuffle. In 2019, he was made the Governor of Himachal Pradesh and later of Haryana, in 2021. Asked if he will get the INDIA bloc to support a possible candidate of Dattatreya, Reddy said he would definitely request the Congress leadership to consider the proposal on behalf of the people of Telangana. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday demanded former Union Minister and ex-Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, an OBC leader from Telangana, be made the Vice President of India. He said the post should be given to Telangana as Telugu was the second-most spoken language in the country, and justice to the native speakers must be done. Meanwhile, he termed as 'unfortunate' the resignation of former vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar. 'The next Vice President should be from Telangana. Telangana deserves its due. You cannot do so much injustice to the people of Telangana. Telugu is the second most spoken language in India after Hindi, and then comes Bengali. Injustice has been done to our people. 'I have demanded that the NDA government appoint Bandaru Dattatreya as the next Vice President of India. If Dattatreya is made the vice president, then some of your sins will be forgiven,' the Congress leader told reporters. Dattatreya was the Haryana governor during 2019-2021. He was made the governor of Himachal Pradesh in July 2021 and vacated that post on July 21 this year. Reddy said he proposed Dattatreya's name because there is so much talk about OBCs these days, and Dattatreya, an OBC, was removed from the post of governor. He said Bandi Sanjay was also axed as the BJP president of Telangana, as he termed both these leaders the main face of Telugu OBCs. 'They sent a person of Telugu-speaking person back home from Delhi (referring to former VP M Venkaiah Naidu). Then they removed Bandaru Dattatreya as governor and then removed Bandi Sanjay as Telangana BJP president,' said Reddy, attacking the BJP-led Centre. Asked if the Congress would support Dattatreya's candidature, he said, 'I will try and help Bandaru Dattatreya and I will also request my leadership to support him too, but the Congress leadership will take a call on it.' Reddy also alleged that the country is in danger till the NDA government is in power, and it has to be removed.

DD Free Dish expands reach with greater representation of languages from southern States
Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs L. Murugan on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) said the government had taken various proactive measures to increase the representation of languages from southern States on DD Free Dish. In a written response to a query in Lok Sabha, the Minister said DD Free Dish had experienced consistent growth in its reach over the past few years. As per industry estimates, it reached 49 million households nationwide as of 2024. The figure was 33 million in 2018. 'The Government has taken various proactive measures to increase the representation of South Indian language channels on DD Free Dish, including: for better regional representation, slots had been reserved for South Indian language channels in the e-auctions of DD Free Dish platform (done in 2025),' said the reply. The eligibility norms have been simplified to ensure greater participation from private broadcasters in the southern region. 'Furthermore, dedicated slots were offered for Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam channels in recent e-auctions. Three additional South Indian language private channels viz. TV9 Telugu, Aastha Kannada & Aastha Telugu, have been onboarded on DD Free Dish since April 1, 2025,' it said. Doordarshan's own regional channels, such as DD Tamil, DD Saptagiri, DD Chandana, DD Yadagiri, and DD Malayalam have also been onboarded. 'The channels are being technologically upgraded and better promoted to enhance their visibility. Apart from this, there are 27 educational channels on DD Free Dish, which are relaying programs in various South Indian languages,' said the reply. Responding to another question, the Minister said the government had undertaken measures for the modernisation and expansion of Akashvani and Doordarshan Kendras (DDK) across all the States. 'The Kendras are being upgraded under the Central Sector Scheme -- Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development (BIND). This includes major upgrades throughout the country, including Bihar, to strengthen public broadcasting. The scheme has been approved with a total outlay of Rs. 2,539.61 crore for the period 2021-26,' it said. The government has also sanctioned various projects for the modernisation of broadcasting infrastructure in Bihar. 'It includes ₹64.56 crore for modernisation of Akashvani Kendras and Rs.4.31 crore for modernisation of Doordarshan Kendras,' said the reply.
