A new lease of life for a disused church, repairs of a much-loved pier and the start of a year of music - these are just some of the things that made the news this week.
Here are five Wearside stories you might have missed.
Repair work on Roker Pier in Sunderland is now under way.
The Grade II-listed structure was badly damaged by Storm Babet in October 2023.
It has been off limits to the public since 300ft (100m) of railings were washed away and some of the path at the pier head broke off.
The council said the scheme was costing in the region of £236,000 and it was aiming to reopen the site by the end of July.

Volunteers have been awarded the highest honour their local authority can grant for outstanding services to the community.
Chester-le-Street residents John Adey and Jimmy Carroll were among those given a Chairman's Medal by Durham County Council thanks to their community efforts to commemorate those from the borough who have fought and died in wars.
The pair were instrumental in creating the town's Remembrance memorial and annual parade, offering residents opportunities to reflect and pay their respects.
Also recognised were volunteers from the Open Door Church for their support for vulnerable residents across Willington.
A film festival has returned with its biggest programme yet, according to bosses.
The Sunderland Shorts Film Festival, which is now in its 10th year, will show more than 200 films at venues across the city centre until Sunday.
Festival director Chris Allan said it had seen its most popular year and had received more than 1,100 entries, hundreds more than in 2024.

A historic church building could become an adult learning and arts centre.
Sunderland City Council's planning department has approved the change of use of St Mary's Church in South Hylton.
The Grade II-listed structure, which sits on the corner of Wear Street and Church Street, dates to the 1800s and has been vacant for some time.

Chart-topping indie rockers Franz Ferdinand and acclaimed singer-songwriter Adele Sandé are to kick off a year-long major celebration of music.
The two acts will launch the Sunderland Year of Music 2025-2026 in June.
It will mark Franz Ferdinand's return to Wearside for the first time in more than a decade, while Sunderland-born Sandé - formerly known as Emeli - will be making her stage debut under her real name.
The gigs will kickstart a week of special live events across the city.

New York Asian Film Festival To Feature Two Disruptive Korean Films

The theme of this year's New York Asian Film Festival is Cinema as Disruption, spotlighting films that challenge, provoke and reimagine. The collection of films—from unsettling horror and feminist thrillers to cosmic punk epics and political allegories— celebrates the ways Asian cinema defies convention. With over 75 premieres—including eight world premieres—and 17 directorial debuts from all over Asia, the 2025 program showcases its largest slate of premieres to date. 'This year's lineup dares to confront, question, and dream—exactly what cinema should do,' says Samuel Jamier, NYAFF Executive Director. 'With 19 Southeast Asian films—our strongest regional representation ever—we're witnessing a generational shift. Beyond the curation of films, we're redrawing a cultural map that urgently needs expansion. Many festivals treat Asian cinema like it ends at the Korean border—we're here to blow up that thinking. We mean business. Or chaos. Probably both.' Two Korean films have been included in the lineup so far. Korea's Lee Jong-seok (The Negotiation) detonates social mores in Forbidden Fairytale, a fearless satire on sex, porn and censorship. The film stars Park Ji-hyun (Reborn Rich), Sung Dong-il (The Tale of Lady Ok) and Choi Si-won (She Was Pretty). Kim Min-ha stars in 'Girl With Closed Eyes.' NYAFF Seventeen first-time filmmakers—nearly half of them women—featured this year, including Korean filmmaker Chun Song-young for her film A Girl with Closed Eyes. The murder mystery stars Kim Min-ha (Pachinko), Lee Ki-woo (Miraculous Brothers), and Choi Hee-seo (Now We Are Breaking Up). Both Korean films will screen at Lincoln Center. Celebrating its 24th edition in 2025, NYAFF showcases a diverse lineup of singular titles each year, ranging from mainstream blockbusters and art-house eccentricities to genre and cult classics. It was the first North American film festival to champion the works of Johnnie To, Bong Joon-ho, Park Chan-wook, Takashi Miike, and other auteurs of contemporary Asian cinema. Notable festival guests have included Lee Byung-hun, Ryoo Seung-wan, Masami Nagasawa, Sammo Hung, Lee Jung-jae, and Jackie Chan. The New York Asian Film Foundation Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the exhibition and appreciation of Asian film culture in all its forms, with year-round festivals and programs, and a view to building bridges between Asia and America. NYAFF is the New York Asian Film Foundation's flagship event. It has been presented in collaboration with Film at Lincoln Center since 2010. Film at Lincoln Center is a nonprofit organization that celebrates cinema as an essential art form and fosters a vibrant home for film culture to thrive. FLC presents premier film festivals, retrospectives, new releases, and restorations year-round at New York's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The New York Asian Film Festival runs from July 11 to 27. The festival will present a selection of films from Asia at Film at Lincoln Center, SVA Theatre, LOOK Cinemas W57, and the Korean Cultural Center NY.

Look of the Week: Haim sisters make the case for the return of the skinny jean

On Tuesday, Este, Alana and Danielle Haim — the sister trio behind the eponymous pop rock band Haim — arrived in London for an appearance on BBC Radio One. All wore skinny pants, albeit in their own way, effortlessly demonstrating how to style a controversial mid-aughts staple three ways. Este, the eldest sister, styled her edgy low-rise black leather pants with a solid patent heel and a lace-trimmed camisole. Alana — also known to fans as 'baby Haim' — opted for a more bohemian look with patchwork suede blue skinny jeans from Dolce & Gabbana, finished off with black ballet flats and a forest green leather jacket. Danielle, the band's lead singer, wore more industrial denim finished with silver zips and extra stitching. Her white military-style jacket, complete with gold-trimmed epaulets, was cropped at the waist in classic 2010s style — allowing a layered look with the vest underneath. The slim, skinny pant was a mainstay of wardrobes across the west in 2007 to 2018, seemingly stocked everywhere from fast fashion stores to luxury retailers. They were once a great leveller, beloved by nonchalant British 'It girls' Kate Moss and Alexa Chung as much as slick US stars such as Rihanna and Beyoncé (there are few occasions where Kim Kardashian and Amy Winehouse's sartorial taste crossed, and the skinny jean was one of them). But as the style makes a 2025 comeback, it has been met with polarized opinions. On X, one user quipped that the return of skinny jeans marked the biggest 'recession indicator' yet. In March, a series of street interviews with young people conducted by social media and influencer agency Screenshot spotlighted a shared disdain for skinny jeans as a fashion trend. But there have long been indicators of a changing tide — and shrinking silhouette. At the start of the year, WGSN's senior denim strategist Susie Draffan shared her predictions with CNN, which included a 'very slow-burn return in 2025 for the skinny jean' in the face of catwalk appearances and growing Miu and McQueen all sent vacuum-packed-style denim down the Fall-Winter runways in 2024. Unofficial trend barometer Bella Hadid has also been spotted in tight drainpipe denim (styled with chunky boots) during a recent trip to Rome, while Lila Moss carries on the family name by pioneering the skinny style just like her pioneering the skinny style just like her mother. The Haim sisters have recently been delving into other areas of 2000s-era pop culture — including their own yearbook photos — to promote their new album, 'I Quit .' The visual artwork for singles like 'Relationships' and 'Everybody's Trying to Figure Me Out' reference famous paparazzi shots of Nicole Kidman shouting with relief (allegedly after signing her divorce papers with Tom Cruise in 2001) and Kate Moss in 2000 sunning herself against a black SUV. For their most recent single, 'Take Me Back,' the band shared an image shot in Manchester — each dressed in a pair of extremely low-slung jeans and peek-a-boo lacy briefs — that has been compared by fans to a much-circulated 2004 pap shot of Keira Knightly wearing a similar outfit. It seems fitting, then, that Haim's own paparazzi photographs add to the feedback loop of act like an extension of their album narrative. Shot by Terence O'Connor, their staged images are a case of art imitating life. But the sisters are going one step further by blurring the lines between reality and reference as they commit to the sartorial touchstones of 2000s culture round-the-clock, too.

A Guide to Harry Styles's London

As a longtime disciple in the House of Harry, I know the 31-year-old somehow manages to be everywhere and nowhere all at the same time. One day Harry Styles is running a marathon in Tokyo, the next he's dining al fresco in Rome. But despite his globe-trotting ways, one thing will never change: his love affair with London. Of course, he's not a native Londoner (he was born in Worcestershire, and grew up in Cheshire), but having lived in the capital on and off since his One Direction breakout 15 years ago, it's safe to say he's pretty well acquainted. Here's how Harry Styles does London. London Fashion Week Once upon a time, Harry Styles was an LFW mainstay. Burberry, House of Holland, Fashion East—in 2014, there was nary a front row on which he did not feature. After a brief (10 year!) hiatus, Styles recently returned to the FROW for a very special occasion: S.S. Daley's spring 2025 show, the brand's first foray into womenswear. As a minority stakeholder in the craft-driven company, Styles showed his support by taking up his spot on the front row next to Vogue's Anna Wintour. And of course, he wore SS Daley for the occasion. Lime biking No car? No problem. Styles likes to use a Lime to get from A to B—there have been a flurry of sightings of Harry on two wheels across the city over the past couple of years. He's even inspired a few imitators, from hoaxes on TikTok to the actual Timothée Chalamet arriving to his own red-carpet premiere by bike. Matcha runs in Marylebone Who can resist a sunny spring walk through London with an iced matcha in hand? Not Harry—especially if it's from How Matcha! on Blandford Street. After being spotted there for a morning fix—wired headphones and The Row fit in tow—he inspired many in the Vogue office to a) get a matcha, and b) dust off their favorite brown loafers. Other spots he loves? Jolene in Stoke Newington, Café Leon Dore in Soho, and Farm Shop in Mayfair, where he was recently snapped catching up with pal James Cordon. High-low cultural excursions Artists know inspiration can strike at any moment, be it at the ballet or a football match. Styles frequents both: last year he took in a production of Tchaikovsky's classic Swan Lake at the Royal Opera House just weeks after watching Luton Town play Manchester United at Kenilworth Road. By the looks of things, he had a blast at both. House by the Heath Hampstead Heath is beloved by the rich and famous (Ariana Grande literally released a song about how much she loved her own time living there while filming Wicked), so Styles's affinity for the NW3 postcode should come as no surprise. He reportedly owns three houses in the area, and is often spotted out and about and attempting to keep a low profile. Maximize your visit to the Heath with a dip in the pond, a browse of Daunt Books, and a coffee at The Nook. Festival season Our north-west Londoner Harry… in east London? Apparently so. Styles spent the first weekend of June in Victoria Park for Jamie xx's inaugural Lido festival, watching along from the VIP section with his longtime collaborators Kid Harpoon, Yaffra and Patience Harding. It was cold and rainy but it didn't stop him from having a good time with his pals. I couldn't help but wonder: might he have an itch for Glastonbury now, too?
