Review of Broughton Park's new Black Sheep Coffee store

Leader Live4 days ago

There had been Black Sheep Coffee signage at the unit since 2023 - and it finally opened its doors on Thursday (June 26).
Black Sheep Coffee is a rapidly growing chain - with four new UK stores opening this month alone. Its Broughton Shopping Park store is its first in North Wales.
(Image: Newsquest) It prides itself on offering coffee with a difference, and stepping inside I could sense how it differentiates to a lot of other coffee shops.
There was locally-themed artwork on the walls, such as Chester Racecourse and the city walls.
(Image: Newsquest) The chain has become known for its matcha drinks - and I knew I had to try one.
For those who've never tried it, matcha is powdered green tea which is taking the world by storm. The word matcha means "ground tea" in Japanese and comes in the form of a vivid green powder that is whisked with hot water and can be added to milk to make a matcha latte.
Another example of the spraypainted artwork inside. (Image: Newsquest) Matcha is made from leaves called "tencha", which are grown in the shade in the final weeks before their harvest to concentrate the flavour, colour and nutrients.
The strawberry and cream matcha. (Image: Newsquest) There was the sweet, fruity notes from the strawberries mixed with the the grassy, fresh scent of matcha. The combination was surprisingly complementary and inviting, creating a unique taste and perfect for people with a sweet tooth.
(Image: Newsquest) I also tried an ordinary flat white coffee - which was nearly perfect. Balanced, flavourful, and expertly crafted. Their coffee is great for those who want a strong coffee experience without the bitterness or heaviness.
(Image: Newsquest) The shop also offers a range of toasties, bagels, sandwiches, smoothies and milkshakes.
MORE NEWS:
(Image: Newsquest)Haris Mirza, the franchise owner of the Broughton store, said: "We're really excited to launch in an area where people may well have never tried Black Sheep Coffee before, and we can't wait to welcome them.
"It's a thriving community and shopping area, with 2,000 staff in the shops here alone and Airbus just over the road. We've come to an area where we think it will thrive."
Black Sheep Coffee's motto is 'Leaving the herd behind', which is ironic as people should be flocking there to give it a try.

Airbus Broughton workers in strike ballot

Airbus workers at Broughton in Flintshire and Filton near Bristol could walk out unless they receive an improved pay offer. Over three thousand aircraft fitters and engineers at the aerospace giant are being balloted from today for industrial action in a dispute over pay. The workers are members of Unite, who said this follows a series of "unacceptable pay offers". They added that they hoped Airbus will return to the negotiating table and a mutually acceptable agreement can be reached. The highly skilled workers play a critical role in the production of aircraft wings for the hugely successful A320 family, A330, A350 and A400M military transport aircraft - core programmes in Airbus's global operations. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: 'Airbus has posted billions in profit and continues to report record aircraft orders. Workers are still struggling with the cost-of-living crisis and this unacceptable pay offer is simply not good enough. Airbus needs to get back round the negotiating table with an offer our members can accept.' Unite national officer Rhys McCarthy said: 'There is no justification for denying the workforce — whose skills and dedication drive Airbus' success — a pay rise that reflects both the cost-of-living pressures and inflation. 'Workers are balloting for industrial action as a last resort, due to stalled negotiations. Unite remains fully committed to resolving this dispute through negotiation and stands ready to return to talks with Airbus to secure an agreement which is acceptable to both sides.' The ballot will run until 24 July. If members vote in favour, strike action could begin in September, with dates to be confirmed.

Nissan to axe 250 jobs at Sunderland plant after £3.5 billion loss

Struggling car manufacturer Nissan is set to cut around 250 staff at its Sunderland factory after making a £3.5 billion global loss last year. The Japanese firm said the move would support its plans to become a 'leaner' and 'more resilient' business. The lay offs will only apply to shop floor and office staff – not those working in manufacturing – and will be part of a 'voluntary departure scheme'. In May Nissan announced it had made huge losses in the 2024/25 financial year, after demand fell in its two largest markets, the US and China. At the same time, new chief executive Ivan Espinosa announced a £1.3bn 'Re:Nissan action-based recovery plan', which included the closure of seven factories. The Tyne and Wear factory, which employs 6,000 staff, was saved amid plans to make the new version ofNissan's electric vehicles LEAF and Juke there as well as the new e-POWER system for Qashqai. At a conference last month, Mr Espinosa said: 'In Europe, we will strengthen our presence by assembling more electric models in Sunderland.' The UK government recently backed Nissan with a £1bn loan to help protect the Sunderland factory, which opened in 1984. Nissan hopes to raise £5.2billion to keep the company viable. More Trending Speaking about the job losses at Sunderland, a Nissan spokesperson told Metro: 'Our Sunderland plant remains at the forefront of our electrification strategy, with the new LEAF coming later this year, a new EV Juke arriving next year and our new e-POWER system coming to Qashqai soon. 'In order to support future competitiveness, this week we are beginning discussions with some of our team in Sunderland about the opportunity to voluntarily leave Nissan, with support from the company. 'This will support the plant's efficiency as we aim to become a leaner, more resilient business.' The new LEAF is expected to cost from around £30,000. Wouldn't buy again for £2.80." On Facebook, parenting blogger Man Behaving Dadly posted as part of his review: "You get one half of a sandwich for £2.80." This comes as the luxury food retailer may be hit with VAT charges, as HMRC do not class the treat as a sandwich.
