Sibu businessman loses RM79,499 in elaborate online lucky draw scam
SIBU (Aug 15): A local businessman lost RM79,499 after falling victim to a sophisticated online lucky draw scam involving fake representatives from an alleged Shanghai-based gold company.
Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the 50-year-old victim lodged a report on August 14, claiming he was duped into making 11 bank transfers to two local accounts over a span of one week.
'The victim initially joined a lucky draw activity via a Facebook livestream on August 7 and made a RM499 payment to participate,' he said in a statement today.
Zulkipli said the victim later received a WhatsApp call from a man introducing himself as 'Mr Teng' from Shanghai, who claimed to represent a gold company planning to open a branch in Malaysia.
'The suspect told the victim that the company was holding a lucky draw campaign with cash prizes in US dollars and offered him the opportunity to become a business partner. Believing the offer, the victim agreed to purchase 80 'gift boxes',' he said.
The victim subsequently transferred RM79,499 in 11 transactions between August 7-13.
On August 12, he received another WhatsApp call from a woman named 'Miss Lee', who claimed that one of the boxes had won him US$288,888.88 and that the money would be transferred to his account the same day.
'However, no money was received, and the victim later discovered that he had been blocked on WhatsApp. Realising he had been scammed, he lodged a police report,' Zulkipli said.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
Zulkipli also advised the public to remain cautious when dealing with online lucky draw promotions, especially those that cannot be verified.
'We urge the public to avoid engaging with dubious online prize schemes and to check suspicious phone numbers or bank accounts via the official website http://ccid.rmp.gov.my/semakmule,' he said.
