Coptic Church mourns 20 Syrians martyred at Damascus church in suicide bombing
The statement read:
'The Coptic Orthodox Church, led by Pope Tawadros II, bids farewell to the martyrs of Syria as they march towards the paradise of eternal joy. These martyrs fell as a result of the treacherous suicide bombing that took place inside the church of Saint Elias in the Douilaa in Damascus, Syria on Sunday 22 June 2025.
'We condemn the heinous bombing and all similar forms of violence, intimidation, and the stripping of any human being of their natural right to live in safety. The blood of the righteous Abel continues to cry out, bearing witness to human injustice towards fellow humans when evil takes control and the scale of righteousness is upset, so as to leading to a belief that killing is a good deed that pleases God.
'We pray that the comfort of the Holy Spirit fills the heart of our brother, His Beatitude Patriarch John X Yazigi, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East for the Greek Orthodox Church, as well as the hearts of the martyrs' families. May the Lord grant a swift recovery to the wounded, and may He bestow peace and calm upon beloved Syria, our region, and the entire world.'
According to Reuters, at least 20 people were killed and dozens injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up at Mar-Elias Church in the Dweila neighbourhood of Syria's capital Damascus on Sunday 22 June.
Syria's Interior Ministry said the suicide bomber was a member of IS, Islamic State. He entered the church, opened fire and then detonated his explosive vest. Syria's Health Ministry reported that 52 persons were also injured in the blast. Scenes from inside the church showed destruction, a bloodied floor, and shattered pews and masonry.
Local Church sources say the church included between 350 and 400 worshippers that day.
Islamic State has been behind several attempted attacks on churches in Syria since Assad's fall.
The Syria martyrs have been mourned by Churches in Egypt and all throughout the region, also by the Councils of Egypt and Middle East Churches. They unanimously expressed pain, dubbing the bombing 'a wound in our heart', and expressed fears for Christian presence in the Middle East.
The news impacted Copts in Egypt especially hard, since it brought to mind painful memories of a suicide bombing that had occurred in Cairo's Boutrossiya Church on 11 November 2016, also during Sunday Mass, in which 29 lost their lives, and 48 were wounded. But in the Cairo bombing, Egypt's Armed Forces rebuilt the damage in the church and fully renovated it, reopening it for worship by New Year 2017.

Over 500 killed around GHF aid distributions in Gaza: UN - War on Gaza
More than 500 Palestinians have been killed in the vicinity of the US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation's (GHF) distribution sites since late May, the United Nations said on Friday. The GHF, presented as a private initiative, began operating on 26 May after Israel enforced a total blockade on all supplies into Gaza for more than two months, triggering warnings of famine. Since then, Israeli troops have repeatedly opened fire on Palestinians gathering near GHF aid sites. The UN said these incidents, along with Israeli attacks on humanitarian convoys, have resulted in hundreds of deaths. 'We have recorded 613 killings near GHF distribution points and near humanitarian convoys since the GHF began operations, until noon on 27 June,' UN human rights office spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani told reporters. 'Of the 613, 509 were killed near GHF distribution points,' she said. The rest were killed near UN and non-UN aid convoys. Shamdasani said the numbers are likely higher, as the UN continues to receive further reports of Israeli attacks it is working to corroborate. Call for investigation She added that Israel's refusal to grant access to Gaza was obstructing independent verification. 'It is clear that the Israeli military has shelled and shot at Palestinians trying to reach the distribution points,' Shamdasani said. 'How many killings? Who is responsible? We need an investigation. We need access. We need an independent inquiry, and we need accountability for these killings.' The UN and major humanitarian groups have refused to work with the GHF, warning that it was created to serve Israeli military interests and violates core humanitarian principles. Headquartered in Delaware, the GHF is chaired by Johnnie Moore, a Christian evangelical leader and ally of US President Donald Trump. On Thursday, the foundation claimed to have distributed over a million food boxes in Gaza. 'We have not had a single violent incident in our distribution sites. We haven't had a violent incident in close proximity to our distribution sites,' Moore told reporters in Brussels on Wednesday. That claim is contradicted by numerous eyewitness accounts and medical reports from Gaza. Rik Peeperkorn, the World Health Organization's representative in the occupied Palestinian territories, condemned the killings: 'The senseless killing in Gaza must stop.' After visiting Nasser Medical Complex this week, he described hospital corridors packed with wounded civilians. 'There are patients everywhere — on the floor, in the corridors,' he said. 'It's mainly boys, young adolescents, young men, and we all know that they go to these so-called safe, non-UN food distribution sites,' he added. 'There are so many of these cases shot in the head, shot in the neck, shot in the chest. *This story was edited by Ahram Online. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Malaysia Dismantles ISIS-Linked Terror Network
Israa Farhan Malaysian authorities have successfully dismantled a terror cell linked to the Islamic State (ISIS), which had been actively using social media and encrypted messaging platforms to spread extremist ideologies and raise funds for the terrorist organization. Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain revealed during a press conference that 36 individuals were arrested in a series of coordinated operations since April. All suspects had entered Malaysia for work purposes, but intelligence reports showed they were recruited through targeted messaging aimed at fellow migrant workers. The dismantled network reportedly used digital platforms not only to radicalize individuals but also to channel funds to ISIS through international money transfers and e-wallet services. Of those arrested, five individuals have been formally charged with membership in a terrorist organization. Authorities plan to deport 15 others, while 16 remain in custody as investigations continue. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean

Mali says Islamic State militant linked to 9/11 killed in northeastern operation
Mali's armed forces said on Saturday they had killed a senior figure in the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), identifying him as a convicted al Qaeda affiliate who had previously served prison time in Spain for his links to the September 11, 2001 attacks. In a statement, the military said the operation took place in the northeastern region of the country, where troops engaged the militant and his bodyguard during a targeted mission based on intelligence reports. The two were killed in a brief clash while reportedly pressuring local populations as part of a forced recruitment campaign. The militant was identified as Imad Eddin Barakat, also known as Abou Dahdah, a Spanish national born in Syria. He had previously been convicted by a Spanish court for his association with the 9/11 plot and his links to al Qaeda. Barakat was sentenced to 27 years in prison, though the term was later reduced to 12 years Mali says Islamic State militant linked to 9/11 killed in northeastern operation According to Malian and regional security sources, Barakat later joined ISGS, a group that has claimed responsibility for a series of deadly attacks across Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. In his role, he acted as both an ideologue and a technical expert in suicide bombings and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and was reportedly connected to the Banibango attack in Niger earlier this year. Security officials said Barakat's presence in Mali was part of a broader effort by ISGS to radicalize and mobilize communities in remote areas of the Sahel in order to expand its operational base. 'This figure was not just symbolic; he was central to the group's strategy of indoctrination and recruitment,' a spokesperson for a local pro-government militia told Reuters. ISGS, which emerged as an offshoot of the Islamic State's global network, remains active across parts of Mali where government forces have limited reach. The Malian army, which has been engaged in a years-long fight against Islamist insurgents, has stepped up operations in the country's volatile northern and central regions. The killing of Barakat marks a high-profile success for the Malian military, though security analysts warn that ISGS remains resilient, with deep local networks and access to arms and funding across porous borders
