New partnership: Centenary students, staff can enroll early in LSUS program
BOSSIER PARISH, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS) and Centenary have announced their new agreement, which allows Centenary undergraduate students the opportunity to enroll early.
According to the news release, 'the collaboration will create more definitive pathways for Centenary students to continue their education in Shreveport while LSUS can attract more students into its MLA program.'
The agreement extends to Centenary faculty to apply for graduate-faculty status at LSUS, allowing them to teach graduate courses in the LSUS MLA program.
'Research has shown that being able to lay out a path for students from the very beginning leads to more success as undergraduates,' Holoman said. 'Students can build on their great liberal arts skills here into a graduate degree from LSUS and further employment. It's a win-win all around.'
According to the news release, eligible Centenary seniors can enroll early into the LSUS Master of Liberal Arts program while completing their final year of classes. A 3.5 GPA is required to begin taking Master level classes as a senior.
'When we get Centenary students to transition to the LSUS master's program, we're keeping students here in Shreveport and northwest Louisiana,' Smith said. 'It's important to this region and to the educational status of the area and its workforce.
'When students complete an undergraduate and a graduate degree in the city of Shreveport, they are going to be that much more likely to stay here, work here and build lives here.'
Centenary undergraduates will be eligible for graduate assistantship appointments, which provide a tuition waiver and compensation for hours worked.
'The memorandum of understanding is the second such agreement signed by Shreveport's two four-year universities,' details the news release, 'Centenary and LSUS signed a similar agreement this past June for Centenary undergraduates to enroll in LSUS's Master of Public Health program.'

Longtime dorm fixture demolished at Cedarville University, making room for growth
It's been a bittersweet moment for students and alumni at Cedarville University as demolition crews tore down Williams Hall. It holds many memories for people who once lived in the dorm hall. Director of Gift Planning for Cedarville University, Roscoe Smith, said, 'When I arrived on campus in the fall of 1978 as a 17-year-old freshman, I was housed in Williams Hall, which at the time was a men's dorm.' He said it was fun reliving the memories as he watched it come down. 'Playing way too much foosball. We had a lounge up on the second floor with a foosball table, and we had tournament after tournament,' Smith said. He continued by saying, 'It's the people that made the difference, not the building.' Williams Hall was transitioned in 1981 to house campus offices, beginning with student services. In recent years, it has been home to several academic departments. This is one of the final steps to rebuilding the campus. The Bolthouse Academic Center will be built at that location, costing $35 million. 'That will house offices, classrooms, student collaboration space, conference rooms for many of our liberal arts programs,' Smith said. He continued by saying it's pivotal for the school's growth. 'It's thrilling to see what Cedarville is continuing to move forward in advance, especially in today's higher ed market, which is very, very challenging,' Smith said. Cedarville University said they plan to have the new academic center open by the Fall semester of the 2027-28 school year with a total of three floors. [SIGN UP: WHIO-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]

Alberta proposes new oil pipeline to British Columbia, seeks private sector leadership
Alberta is seeking a private sector proponent for a potential new crude oil pipeline, aiming to connect the oil-rich province to the Port of Prince Rupert in British Columbia, reported Reuters. Premier Danielle Smith announced the initiative at an energy conference in Calgary, highlighting the province's strategy to engage with Canada's major pipeline companies. The proposed pipeline, which has the capacity to carry one million barrels per day (1mbbl/d), is part of Alberta's plan to diversify its oil export markets, which are currently heavily reliant on the US. This comes in the wake of trade tensions and tariff threats from the US, underlining the need for Canada to broaden its trade horizons. Premier Danielle Smith said in a statement: 'The federal government should act now to remove production caps and join us in supporting an oil pipeline to the west coast, increasing access to tidewater and ensuring we can continue to provide Alberta-made energy for our valued partners around the world.' Smith expressed the province's openness to a consortium approach for the pipeline's construction or to support a single company that steps forward as the main proponent. The province recognises the strategic importance of a new export pipeline in supporting the long-term growth of Canada's oil industry, which achieved record production last year with the opening of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion in May, the report stated. The premier also touched upon the potential benefits of aligning the development of the pipeline with the Pathways Alliance carbon capture and storage project, which aims to reduce emissions from Canada's energy sector. However, the Pathways project, estimated to cost between $10bn (C$13.65bn) and $20bn, has yet to secure funding support from the government. Earlier this month, wildfires in Alberta resulted in the suspension of roughly 350,000 barrels per day of heavy crude production, approximately 7% of Canada's overall oil output.
