The Supreme Court's order on stray dogs have left public opinion divided as people engaged in a heated debate online.
The Supreme Court's order for the removal of stray dogs from the streets of Delhi-NCR has triggered massive debate online, where netizens shared divided and sharp opinions in favour and against the decision of the top court.
The apex court on Monday ordered the Delhi government and civic bodies in Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad to round up stray dogs, sterilise them, and move them permanently to shelters within eight weeks.
It also warned of strict action against any individual or organisation attempting to block the authorities' drive to pick up stray dogs.
While the Resident Welfare Associates welcomed the order, some animal activists protested against the court online.
How Did People React To SC's Stray Dog Order?
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram backed the Supreme Court's order and said, 'Hope this is the beginning of serious & concerted action #StrayDogs".
TMC MP Saket Gokhale termed the court's order as 'cruel and inhumane" and called for a review of the order by a larger Bench.
'The issue of management of stray dogs as well as safety of people is definitely a matter of concern. However, it is not something that can be resolved by arbitrary orders passed by the judiciary without any larger consultative process. Also, subjecting defenseless animals to wanton cruelty can never be a solution. We have sufficient laws in the country to deal with the issue of stray dogs and their sterilization as well as population control. And I agree that it is a very important issue where the welfare and safety of common people is concerned. However, the failure of municipal authorities to implement these laws and do their job cannot and should not become a reason for the judiciary to impose cruel and inhumane directions," he posted on X.
Author Suhel Seth linked the Supreme Court's order to compassion and said that there needs to be a review petition for the same.
'A country that can't care for its animals especially dogs is not a country that is compassionate. The Supreme Court is so so wrong on this one. Said both as a dog lover and a proud Indian. Some one needs to file a review petition! Soonest…" he tweeted.

Actor Vir Das urged residents of Delhi-NCR to adopt a dog off the streets, citing 'humanity".
'If you are a resident of Delhi. Can I persuade you to adopt an indie off the streets, more than one? They are extremely healthy, low maintenance, and will provide you with more love affection and gratitude than you could ever imagine. Am also asking you to wholeheartedly and generously support your nearest animal welfare NGO. I plan on doing so, I hope you will too. As appeals are filed in court and processes take their time, it's important for our humanity to kick in immediately. Please do your part, big or small, it all adds up," he tweeted.

Writer and Director Simi Garewal appealed to the people to sign the petition, alleging that the authorities will 'kill" stray dogs under the guise of shelter.
'Please please sign this petition for the voiceless. They will starve and kill these beautiful animals under the guise of a shelter. Please help to save them from the cruel, inhuman order of the Supreme Court," she tweeted.

PETA India objected to the Supreme Court's order and said that the removal of dogs will 'cause uproar in communities" that care for them.
'Communities think of neighbourhood dogs as family, and the displacement and jailing of dogs is not scientific and has NEVER worked. Per a population survey conducted in 2022–23, Delhi has around 10 lakh community dogs, with less than half sterilised. Forced removal of some 10 lakh community dogs from Delhi's streets will cause uproar in communities that care deeply for them and chaos and suffering for the dogs on a large scale. It will also ultimately do nothing to curb the dog population, reduce rabies or prevent dog bite incidents," PETA India said.
Netizens React
'The Supreme Court order on stray dogs in Delhi is nothing but a death sentence for every single stray on every single street in the national capital – and each one of us needs to raise our voice against it," wrote one user.
'I heard about cow shelters but never heard of #straydogs shelter homes I have heard about deportation centres for foreigners but never heard of deportation centres for stray dogs," a user wrote.
'Earth belongs to everyone, and not just humans. #straydogs were living with us and should live in future as well," another said.
'If a dog bites — kill it. If a bull hits — kill it. If pigeons spread disease — stop feeding them, let them die. But if a luxury car owner runs over someone — silence. If someone misbehaves with a girl — silence," a user said.
'This is going to have the biggest consequences!! Not only will we protest against it, but this will also turn everything upside down. I've always respected innocent street dogs, they're already ignored, and now this stupid decision will only raise tensions more," another netizen wrote.
Expressing support for the court's order, a user wrote, 'This is a very good decision, everyone is appreciating it except some are dog lovers or they have dogs at home, we need to get rid of stray dogs asap."

Sushmita Sen opens up about meeting Donald Trump while recalling her Miss Universe franchise days: 'He's not...

Sushmita Sen, India's first Miss Universe and a celebrated actor, has recently opened up about a chapter of her life few knew in detail, her time managing the Miss India Universe franchise between 2010 and 2012. Speaking during promotions for her series Aarya, she revealed that the offer came out of the blue. 'The Miss Universe Organisation called me, and said, 'Would you like to take the franchise?' I was like, 'What? Really? That was like a dream!'' she recalled. It was, however, a dream laced with complications. The pageant was then owned by Donald Trump, which she admits 'didn't make it easy or fun.' Was Donald Trump her boss? While Trump was the franchise owner, Sushmita clarified that he was not her direct superior. 'Luckily, the only people who were my boss at that time were Paramount Communications and Madison Square Garden, because they owned Miss Universe when I was an employee of Miss Universe for a year. I was a franchise owner for Donald Trump.' She did meet Trump during that period, but she refused to dwell on him. 'The point is that it doesn't matter,' she said, before adding her candid impression: 'There are some people who leave an impression, not necessarily because of their achievements or power. Just for the people that they are. He is not one of them.' The Trump era of Miss Universe Donald Trump owned the Miss Universe Organisation from 1996 to 2015, a time when he was still best known as a business tycoon and TV personality. He later became the 45th President of the United States in 2017 and, after losing the 2020 election, returned to win the 2024 race, taking office again in January 2025. From Miss Universe to the big screen Sushmita's own Miss Universe win in 1994 was a watershed moment for India, making her the first Indian woman to wear the crown. The victory propelled her into modelling and Bollywood, where she became known for her elegance, wit, and strong screen presence. After a break from acting, she made a celebrated comeback with the series Aarya, followed by Taali, in which she played transgender activist Shreegauri Sawant — a performance that drew critical praise. Sushmita's account of her time with the franchise offers a rare peek into the glamour and grit of beauty pageants, the corporate layers behind them, and the personalities who shaped that world — for better or worse.

Bihar SIR requires 11 documents, exercise deemed voter-friendly: SC

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said the 11 documents required to be submitted by an elector for Bihar's special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral roll as opposed to seven documents in summary revision conducted previously showed the exercise was "voter friendly". A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi, which resumed hearing on a batch of pleas challenging the June 24 decision of Election Commission to conduct SIR in poll bound Bihar, said despite petitioners' arguments that non-acceptance of Aadhaar was exclusionary, it appeared the large number of documents was "actually inclusionary". "The number of documents in summary revision conducted earlier in the state was seven and in SIR it is 11, which shows it is voter friendly. We understand your arguments that non-acceptance of Aadhaar is exclusionary but a high number of documents is actually inclusionary," the bench said. The top court noted electors were required to submit any one of the 11 documents in the list. Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for the petitioners, disagreed and submitted the number of documents may be high but they had the least coverage. Giving an example of passport availability with the electors, Singhvi said it was only one to two per cent in Bihar and they have no provision for permanent resident certificates given in the state. "If we see the availability of documents with the population in Bihar it can be seen the coverage is very low," he said. The bench said the coverage of 3.6 million of passport holders in the state appears to be good. "The list of documents is prepared normally after taking feedback from various government departments to ensure maximum coverage," Justice Bagchi pointed out. On August 12, the top court said inclusion and exclusion of citizens or non-citizens from the electoral rolls was within the remit of the Election Commission and backed its stand to not accept Aadhaar and voter cards as conclusive proof of citizenship in the SIR of voters' list in Bihar. As the row over the ongoing SIR escalated inside and outside Parliament, the top court also observed that the dispute was "largely a trust deficit issue since the Election Commission(EC) has claimed that roughly 6.5 crore people of the total 7.9 crore voting population in poll-bound Bihar didn't have to file any documents for them or their parents featured in the 2003 electoral rolls.
