Fire aboard Singapore-flagged ship partially contained: DGS
Kochi, The blaze aboard the Singapore-flagged cargo ship, which caught fire last week off the Kerala coast, is partially contained, the Directorate General of Shipping said on Wednesday.
According to a DGS report about the situation as of June 17, there is a noticeable reduction in visible flames and smoke intensity across most zones of the vessel MV Wan Hai 503 that caught fire after an explosion in one of the containers aboard. The vessel was heading to Colombo from Mumbai.
The other positive developments were the vessel's reduced speed, its offshore trajectory and current position at around 68.5 nautical miles off the Kerala coast, the report said.
At the same time, the persistent smoke from certain sections of the ship, its history of internal flare-ups which require sustained firefighting pressure, the adverse weather conditions and the absence of a second towline were matters of concern, it said.
"Weather at the site remains adverse, with westerly winds between 29–34 knots, gusting up to 39 knots, intermittent heavy rainfall, and periods of zero visibility, all of which are significantly impeding firefighting and boarding operations," the DGS said.
Establishing a second towline was crucial, given the dynamic sea state and the structural stresses already endured by the vessel, it added. Presently, the ship remains connected via a single towline to a tugboat Offshore Warrior, it said.
The DGS report further said that stability assessments of the vessel suggest it was operating within 90 per cent of acceptable seagoing conditions, but targeted hull strength evaluations, especially near high-heat zones, remain a priority.
It also said that discussions are going on for a Port of Refuge, as a contingency, with Jebel Ali in Dubai under primary consideration, subject to complete fire suppression, structural integrity assessments, and regulatory permissions.
"Alternatives in Bahrain, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Qatar are also under review," it added.
The report further said that identification of a body which reportedly washed ashore near the Kerala coast is currently under verification, with support from local authorities, as of the 22 crew members on board the vessel, 18 were rescued while four remain missing. "Efforts remain focused on fire suppression, structural safety, and safe relocation of the vessel out of Indian waters under controlled tow," it said.

Air India crash: Lone survivor discharged, performs cousin's last rites
Viswash Kumar Ramesh, 40, the lone survivor of the June 12 Air India plane crash, performed the last rites of his cousin, who was killed in the aviation disaster, after he was discharged from an Ahmedabad hospital on Tuesday evening. Ahmedabad Civil Hospital medical superintendent Rakesh Joshi said Ramesh was handed over the remains of his cousin, Ajay, identified through DNA matching, for his cremation. Ramesh said he was in Diu, over 370 km from Ahmedabad, to perform the last rites of Ajay, who was on seat number 11J of the Air India flight. Ramesh, a British citizen seated on 11A, was returning home on Air India flight AI-171 after visiting his native Diu with his cousin. Visuals of a bruised Ramesh limping away from the debris of the plane that crashed seconds after take-off in Ahmedabad became one of the defining images of the crash. The portion of the plane, where Ramesh was seated, fell on the ground floor of a medical college hostel premises. He got out of the broken door of the plane. Asker Ali, the nodal officer for Diu, said top district officials attended Ajay's funeral. 'There were 15 passengers with roots in Diu aboard the flight. Four, including the lone survivor, had British citizenship. Four were Indian citizens, and the remaining seven were Portuguese.' Ali said that the DNA of 12 have matched and their final rites have been performed in Diu. 'The DNA samples of two victims are yet to be matched with their family members.' Diu administrator Praful Patel met the families of the victims and visited the survivor at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. Ali said Ramesh received impact injuries on his chest, eyes, and feet. 'He has recovered and is healthy. Ramesh is here with his relatives. Diu, being a small place, has a very close-knit society. Many passengers who were on board knew each other,' he said. Ramesh, who was among 53 British nationals on the Air India flight, said there was a loud noise 30 seconds after take-off. When he got up, there were bodies all around. 'I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed me and put me in an ambulance and brought me to the hospital,' he said last week. Investigators have been surveying the wreckage of the plane to determine what caused the crash in a densely populated residential area in Ahmedabad shortly after Air India flight AI-171 took off. It was the worst civil aviation disaster in over a decade globally, and in India in over 30 years. The London-bound flight with 242 people aboard began losing altitude seconds after take-off before crashing into buildings near Ahmedabad airport. Approximately 30 people died on the ground, while Ramesh was the only passenger who survived.

Air India plane crash: Lone survivor attends last rites of brother killed in Ahmedabad tragedy, video goes viral
A touching video has surfaced on social media that shows the lone survivor of Air India flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that crashed into the hostel building of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad on June 12, joining the last rites of his brother, Ajay, and shouldering his mortal remains. Ajay was among the 241 people on board the ill-fated plane flying to London from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport, which crashed within 32 seconds of take-off. His funeral was held today, and a heart-wrenching video of the ceremony has now surfaced on the internet. Ramesh—seated in 11A, right next to the emergency exit—emerged as the miracle survivor of the Ahmedabad plane crash. The 40-year-old British-Indian had been admitted to the Civil Hospital with burn injuries. Earlier this week, a new video from the crash site showed Ramesh walking away from the raging fire at the crash site. Describing the moment of the plane crash, Ramesh had said, 'A minute after take-off, it felt like the plane had got stuck. Then green and white lights came on. They (the pilots) tried to raise the plane, but it went full speed and crashed into the building.' At least 190 victims of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad have been identified through DNA matching so far, with 159 bodies handed over to their families, an official told news agency PTI on Wednesday. Among the deceased was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was cremated with full state honours in the presence of his family and senior BJP leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah. On Tuesday, the last rites of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal—the pilot-in-command of the ill-fated flight—along with senior crew member Aparna Mahadik and crew member Maithili Patil, were performed in their respective hometowns.

Air India Crash: Miracle Survivor Vishwas Kumar Ramesh Discharged, to Perform Brother's Last Rites
Air India crash survivor Viswas Kumar Ramesh has been discharged from Ahmedabad Civil Hospital and is heading home to perform the last rites of his younger brother, who perished in the April 12 crash. Ramesh, the only survivor among 242 passengers on the London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner, was flung out of the aircraft after it broke apart mid-takeoff. His seat, 11A, detached and landed near ground level, sparing him the deadly fireball. Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, called his survival a miracle and expressed disbelief at how he made it out alive. A viral video earlier showed him emerging from the BJ Medical campus minutes after the crash. Ramesh is now returning home not to celebrate life, but to bid farewell to his brother. PM Modi and HM Amit Shah had visited him during his recovery. As he prepares for the cremation, his story remains a powerful symbol of resilience in the face of overwhelming tragedy.#AirIndiaCrash #ViswashkumarRamesh #Boeing787Crash #MiracleSurvivor #BJMedicalTragedy #IndiaUK #ModiAhmedabadVisit #AviationDisaster #CrashSurvivorStory #PlaneCrashIndia #toi #toibharat #bharat #breakingnews #indianews
