Chinese teenage girl on cultural exchange program stabbed to death in NSW's Edgeworth, fellow student arrested

A teenage girl visiting Australia on a cultural exchange program has been
fatally stabbed and a fellow student has been arrested
.
The 14-year-old was found with a stab wound to her torso at her host family's home on Euston Close, Edgeworth, in Newcastle's west, about 10.20pm on Monday.
The two girls had retired to their separate rooms when the host mother heard a commotion and went to check, finding the injured girl.
She was rushed to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition but later died from her injuries.
A 13-year-old girl, known to the victim, was arrested at the scene and is assisting police with their inquiries.
Police seized a kitchen knife from the scene, believed to have been taken from a drawer.
Both girls were part of a cultural exchange program from China, attending a local school and visiting sites around the Hunter area, Superintendent Tracy Chapman told reporters on Tuesday.
They arrived in Australia eight days ago and were expected to leave on August 16.
Police believe the girls did not know each other before arriving and only became acquainted through the program.
They were staying with
a host family
consisting of a man and a woman in their 50s.
No other people were in the house that night.
Police are still trying to determine the nature of the relationship between the two girls.
'Obviously extensive inquiries with other students, teachers, parents and the hosts, of course, to establish what the relationship was prior to last night,' Chapman said.
She added that the investigation may take longer due to language barriers and the girls not being Australian residents.
'Investigation with young girls involved language barriers, working through the consulate, (and) they're not Australian residents, obviously,' she said.
'So there are obvious complications and complexities with that, which is why it's taken us some time to work through.'
No charges have been laid yet, but Superintendent Chapman said charges are expected to be filed later on Tuesday afternoon.
Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

‘Severely unwell': New details emerge about foreign exchange ‘murder'

Chilling new details have emerged after a teen girl was allegedly stabbed to death by a fellow student on a foreign exchange trip to Australia. The two girls, aged 14 and 13, were both staying with the same host family in Edgeworth Newcastle, NSW, when the incident took place. The older girl was allegedly stabbed in the torso late on Monday night and, despite being rushed to John Hunter Hospital, succumbed to her injuries. The 13-year-old was arrested at the scene and charged with murder the following day. Now it has emerged that the younger girl is 'severely unwell' and on numerous medications. The case was heard in Broadmeadow Children's Court on Wednesday. Magistrate Andrew Eckhold acknowledged a 'clear mental health nexus' in the case but noted the seriousness of the charge. The girl did not apply for bail, which was subsequently refused. NSW Police stated both girls were part of the same cultural exchange program and staying with the same host family. They had arrived in Australia eight days prior and were scheduled to leave on August 16. It is believed they did not know each other before the program. Police are investigating the relationship between the girls, with Superintendent Tracy Chapman noting the complexities due to language barriers and the girls' non-resident status. Meanwhile The Council of Australian Student Exchange Organisations (CASEO) released a statement on Wednesday, offering 'heartfelt condolences' to those affected. CASEO clarified that the girls were part of a 'study abroad program' rather than a student exchange program, 7News reported. 'While both involve international students studying overseas, there are important legal and operational distinctions in NSW,' CASEO explained. They highlighted that student exchange programs are reciprocal arrangements requiring host family placement and school enrolment for a set period, regulated by specific guidelines. In contrast, study abroad programs involve full-fee paying students without the same formal structure. CASEO emphasised the NSW Government's regulatory focus on exchange programs exceeding 12 weeks or 10 weeks in school, noting that study abroad programs fall outside this scope. 'CASEO deeply values the safety and welfare of all young people engaging in student exchange or cultural programs,' the statement continued. 'Although the affected students were not under an exchange arrangement governed by CASEO's member organisation, we offer our deepest sympathies at this difficult time.' The 13-year-old is due to appear in court again in October with a Mandarin interpreter.

Perv sentenced after spying on women

A Chilean who used a tiny camera to spy on women showering has been told Australia 'doesn't want him here'. Luis Alberto Cancino Mena recorded videos for months before the device was spotted by cleaners at a home in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. Mena, 39, pleaded guilty to three separate charges of filming a person without their consent and appeared at Waverley Local Court on Wednesday where he was given a nine month intensive corrections order. Sentencing Mena, Magistrate Michael Barko said the impact of his crimes would cause anxiety for the victims for the rest of their lives. He said: 'Pornography is not illegal, but when innocent women get filmed without consent it beggars belief, it's a perversion, it has to be a perversion. 'These women for the rest of their lives are going to think, 'Are these images going to be shared on the World Wide Web?' 'The defendant at the time was here with the privilege of being allowed in this country, he's expressed the desire to return to his homeland of Chile. 'Quite frankly the Australian public doesn't want him here.' Luis Alberto Cancino Mena leaving Waverley Court on Wednesday after sentencing. NewsWire / Nikki Short Credit: News Corp Australia According to court documents, Mena's behaviour went undetected for months until cleaners stumbled upon the device in early February. 'The cleaners of the premises attended the location and begun cleaning as per the agreement in place. They were cleaning the bathroom before locating a recording camera device which was in the shape of a pen on the ground of the bathroom. The cleaner pulled apart the device and observed it to be recording,' court documents said. 'The storage device was accessed by the cleaners and they observed recording files of the victim with no clothes on taking a shower.' Police say one recording 'clearly shows the accused setting the camera up in the bathroom'. After arresting Mena, police seized the man's laptop where they found folders marked under the names of the victims. Footage taken from the hidden camera had been catalogued based on who it was recording, and was then placed into the folder allocated to that person. Luis Mena was sentenced to a nine month intensive corrections order. NewsWire / Nikki Short Credit: News Corp Australia In coming to his decision, Magistrate Barko noted the considerable effort Mena went to in buying the pen with a camera in it, getting the SIM card and downloading the footage, saying 'it's not as though you're picking up a box of chocolates from Woolworths'. He also queried the mindset of Mena, when pornography was easily accessible online. 'With all that's accessible on the internet, all that's accessible on social media, all that's accessible with the push of a button, why someone has to acquire a camera, to film the private parts … of three completely innocent victims,' he said. Mena must adhere to strict bail conditions including submitting to supervision by a Community Corrections Officer, or risk jail time. Magistrate Barko also handed Mena an AVO order prohibiting him from contacting the victims for two years.
