Real flirt with disaster late on to set up PSG semi at Club World Cup

Real Madrid outlasted Borussia Dortmund 3-2 after a dramatic finale on Saturday to set up an intriguing Club World Cup semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain.
Gonzalo Garcia opened the scoring in the 10th minute and Fran Garcia got the second 10 minutes later as Real were in full control.
But it was not over until plenty of stoppage time drama with three goals, a red card for Real's Dean Huijsen, and a mega save from Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois on the last play of the match.
Maximilian Beier pulled one back for Dortmund completely out of the blue, Kylian Mabappe's artistic volley made it 3-1, Serhou Guirassy converted a penalty to give Dortmund hope again after being pulled down by Huijsen which resulted in the red card.
Courtois then made an extraordinary save against Marcel Sabitzer to preserve the victory.
New Real coach Xabi Alonso had brought on France captain Mbappe and Croatian veteran Luka Modric late in the game amid big cheers from the fans.
Dortmund came close but Real advanced into the final four which on Wednesday at the same venue will be a duel between the record Champions League winners from Spain and the reigning champions in the elite event from France. PSG beat Bayern Munich 2-0 earlier Saturday.
'It a great challenge for us to play PSG. We are positive from today and move on to the next one,' Alonso told streaming portal DAZN.
Looking at the match, he added: 'It was under control with the result and not conceding much, but the last 10 minutes were crazy. We lost our shape and intensity.'
Dortmund defender Waldemar Anton said: 'We tried after the first goal and didn't give up. I already saw the last ball in.
'A 3-3 would have been lucky. We didn't do well in the first half. We conceded too easy and had too much respect. It was a little better in 2nd half.'
Alonso fielded the same 11 that started in the quarter-final against Juventus while Dortmund's Niko Kovac made two changes.
Julian Brandt came on for Jobe Bellingham, whose suspension ruled out a of brothers against Real's Jude Bellingham, who in the past also played in Dortmund.
The Germans had an early chance from Brandt's header which went wide but Real soon took control and took the lead in the 10th minute when Gonzalo Garcia volleyed in Arda Güler's pass.
It got worse for Dortmund when a cross from the right by Trent Alexander-Arnold found the other full back Fran Garcia to drill home for 2-0.
Bellingham shot wide in the 26th and Vinicius Junior chipped over with Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel stranded far outside of his goal shortly before half-time.
Real were not quite as dominant after the break but Dortmund also lacked in attack to find a way back into the match.
Aurelien Tchouameni rattled the crossbar but a goal would not have counted because Vinicius Junior was offside in the build-up.
Güler aimed inches wide in stoppage time and Antonio Rüdiger poked wide as well as Real appeared to head to an easy win - until all the drama unfolded late on.

PSG faces Tottenham in UEFA Super Cup

ROME: France's Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) will face England's Tottenham Hotspur in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Super Cup match that will take place in the Italian city of Udine on Wednesday. Last season's UEFA Champions League winners, PSG, and UEFA Europa League winners, Tottenham, now have the chance to add another trophy to their cabinets in the curtain-raiser to the new season. PSG, under Spanish coach Luis Enrique, dominated most competitions last season, achieving a historic quadruple consisting of the three domestic titles of Ligueâ 1, Coupe de France, and the French Super Cup, in addition to winning their first-ever UEFA Champions League title, becoming the second French club in history to lift the European trophy, after Olympique de Marseille. PSG went on to pursuit a quintuple by aiming for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 held in the United States this summer, however, they suffered a heavy 0-3 defeat to Chelsea in the final. Due to their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025PSG didn't have enough time for friendly matches to prepare for the new season. They will begin their Ligue 1 title defense next Sunday with an away match against Nantes. On the other hand, Tottenham had a rigorous preseason program, playing six friendly matches under their new Danish manager Thomas Frank, going unbeaten until they suffered a heavy 0-4 loss to FC Bayern Munich last week.

PSG sign Bournemouth defender Zabarnyi

PA Media/DPA London Paris Saint-Germain have completed the signing of defender Illia Zabarnyi from Bournemouth. The Ukraine international has agreed a five-year contract with the European champions in a deal reportedly worth an initial £54.5 million ($73.39 million), plus £2.6 million in performance-related add-ons. Zabarnyi, 22, joined the Cherries in January 2023 from Dynamo Kyiv and went on to make 86 appearances for the Premier League side in all competitions. 'I'm very happy to join Paris Saint-Germain, the best club in the world, with the best project,' he told the Ligue 1 club's website. 'I am here to give everything I have on the pitch and I'm looking forward to making my debut and meeting the fans.' PSG welcomed the player and said on 'X' platform: 'Paris Saint-Germain are delighted to welcome Illia Zabarnyi to the Club. The 22-year-old central defender, who will wear the number six shirt, is the Club's first-ever Ukrainian player.' Zabarnyi is the third first-choice defender to leave Bournemouth this summer following the departure of Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid for £50 million and Milos Kerkez's move to Liverpool in a £40 million deal. During his time on the south coast, he played an instrumental role in back-to-back record-breaking finishes by helping Andoni Iraola's team twice surpass the club's highest points total in the Premier League. The Kiev-born centre-back, who has 49 international caps, was voted the Cherries' supporters' player of the season for the 2023-24 campaign. PSG won the Champions League for the first time in May after beating Inter Milan 5-0 in the final in Munich. Luis Enrique's French champions, who have also added goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier to their squad during the current transfer window, face Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday before beginning their domestic title defence on Sunday away to Nantes. PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi said: 'Illia is a talented international player and a great professional. 'He will make a major contribution to everything that we are building long-term at Paris Saint-Germain.'

Jack Grealish joins Everton on season-long loan from Man City

PA Media/dpa London Everton have completed the signing of England winger Jack Grealish on a season-long loan from Manchester City. The 29-year-old has been looking for an exit from Etihad Stadium after making only seven Premier League starts for Pep Guardiola's side last season, seeking regular football ahead of next summer's World Cup. 'I'm over the moon to have signed for Everton - it's massive for me, honestly,' Grealish said. 'This is a great club, with great fans. 'As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go. On social media, I've been flooded with messages from Everton supporters, so there's that side of it as well and that's another reason why I chose Everton. 'I want to say thank you to the fans for all of the messages I've had already. Thank you for all of the love and support. I hope I can repay you now and I'm sure I will.' Grealish has won three Premier League titles, two FA Cups, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup since joining City for a British-record transfer fee in the summer of 2021. He was integral to the City side that completed a Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup treble in 2022-23 but was hampered by injury in the following campaign and has since fallen down the pecking order. Grealish said he was 'heartbroken' to have been left out of England's Euro 2024 squad last summer and is targeting a return to the international arena under Thomas Tuchel as the World Cup looms large. Grealish has chosen to wear the number 18 at Everton in honour of two former England internationals. 'There is a reason for [choosing number 18],' he explained. 'There were other numbers, but my two favourite English players ever are Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne and I know they both wore number 18 here. 'So, as soon as I knew this deal was close, I had a look and number 18 was free, so that was perfect for me and it was the only number I was going to take from that point. 'I spoke to Wayne before I came here and I mentioned that to him - about the number 18 - so I hope he's happy as well.' Grealish is Everton's sixth summer signing following the arrivals of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Charly Alcaraz, Thierno Barry, Mark Travers and Adam Aznou. 'We welcome Jack to Everton and we're very pleased to have him on board,' manager David Moyes said. 'I think we're getting him at a good time because he's experienced, he understands the Premier League and we're all fully aware of the levels he's capable of performing to. 'I know Jack's ambition is to get back into the England squad, so hopefully we can help him achieve that over the course of the season.' Everton launch their new campaign at newly-promoted Leeds on Monday before playing their first Premier League game at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium against Brighton on August 24.
