TP Solar crosses 4 GW of solar module production at its Tamil Nadu unit

TP Solar Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) and the manufacturing arm of The Tata Power Company Limited (Tata Power), on Monday announced that it has crossed 4 gigawatts (GW) of solar module manufacturing at its Tamil Nadu plant.
The plant has cumulatively produced 4,049 megawatts (MW) of solar modules and 1,441 MW of solar cells up to May 2025. With a strategic focus on scaling up production, the company is targeting 3.7 GW of solar cell output and 3.725 GW of module production in FY26, further solidifying its commitment to supporting India's clean energy transition.
Strategically built to comply with Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) norms, the facility is equipped to manufacture next-generation Mono PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell) and advanced TopCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) modules using cutting-edge automated and AI-driven technologies. The ramp-up aligns with Tata Power's goal to strengthen India's solar supply chain resilience by reducing dependency on imports and enabling faster deployment of clean energy projects nationwide. The facility is already supplying panels to meet Tata Power's order book requirements — including utility-scale solar farms, hybrid energy parks, and distributed rooftop systems — as well as serving marquee third-party installations across the country.
With its rated capacity of 4.3 GW expected to be fully realised in FY26, the plant will continue to support the nation's target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Beyond its technological prowess, the Tamil Nadu facility also stands out for its inclusive and sustainability-first approach.
Over 80 per cent of the plant's shop-floor workforce comprises women, reflecting Tata Power's strong focus on gender diversity and equitable job creation in advanced manufacturing. The plant itself has been built using green building principles, energy-efficient processes, and resource-conscious design, minimising its environmental footprint. As one of India's largest vertically integrated solar players, TP Solar is driving innovation and scale across the clean energy value chain — from manufacturing and engineering to deployment and digital energy services.
The ramp-up of this 4.3 GW facility positions the company as a key enabler of India's clean energy independence while advancing the global movement towards sustainable energy security. TPREL also has a 682 MW solar module and a 530 MW solar cell plant at Bengaluru, which operates at full capacity to support the production of DCR-compliant cells and modules.

In a huge relief to housing societies that are waiting for occupancy certificates, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has also extended the time for its two current special amnesty schemes until December 31, 2025. The extension, sanctioned under the supervision of MHADA's vice-president and CEO Sanjeev Jaiswal is likely to benefit almost 80 housing societies in Mumbai. The extension is for two schemes: one for issuing occupancy certificates (OC) to redeveloped buildings under the 1991 Development Control Regulations (DCR), and another for waiving interest on additional premium amounts charged during redevelopment under MHADA's jurisdiction. According to Authority Resolution No. 6260, MHADA's Mumbai Board will continue to waive interest on pending additional premiums levied on housing societies. These societies will now pay only the principal amount, relieving the financial burden that has slowed the granting of occupancy certificates for most projects. At the same time, the Building Permission Cell is also offering an amnesty scheme for buildings redeveloped under DCR 1991. The scheme gives a 'concession' of up to 75 per cent on penalty charges imposed for unauthorised use of rooms like enclosed flowerbeds or balconies and minor variations from approved plans. It will be applicable to buildings that took building permissions under DCR 1991 till November 12, 2018. Several societies were issued No-Objection Certificates (NOC) or Letters of Intent (LoI) between 29 July 2004 and 4 June 2007 and were subsequently requested to pay extra premiums, but on account of non-payment, their occupancy certificates are pending. Consequently, people occupying these societies have been faced with increased utility bills, tax dues, and inconveniences in the sale or transfer of the flat. 'While physically, the majority of buildings have been completed and are transferred to the societies by developers, the financial liability of outstanding premium payments has stayed with the societies as well as members. The interest waiver scheme now provides them with a realistic route to regularisation,' a MHADA spokesperson said. Where building plans have been changed above approved limits, a 75 per cent concession on penalty is permissible under the amnesty scheme, subject to recovery of fees on revised plans.

MUMBAI: Beneath India's roads, if you listen close enough, there are some jarring sounds—the hum of 'ghost chargers.' These chargers were engineered to be silent. But as things are, they appear to be yelping in pain as all kinds of powers flog India's ambitious electric vehicle (EV) revolution. The cables are straining and it would appear to many their purpose is forgotten. And why may that be? Picture this: You navigate to a charging station confidently highlighted as 'active' on your app. On getting there, you find the place either stripped of essential components or repurposed into a garbage bin. In Delhi alone, 84% of surveyed chargers are non-functional. Casualties if you will, of theft, negligence, or unreliable power. Nationally, half of all chargers lie idle, failing EV owners who placed their trust in India's electric promise. Yet, rewind to May 2025. India proudly announced nearly 30,000 public chargers, a significant jump in infrastructure. The numbers painted progress. But they masked an unsettling truth: there's always a chasm between promise and gritty ground realities. The narrative makes itself obvious on talking to automobile enthusiasts. Take NC Toney from Kochi as a case in point. He owns an electric scooter. With a reliable home charging station, he swears by his scooter as an ideal one for short city runs. It allows him do 60-70 kilometres on a single charge. Yet, Toney wouldn't dare venture far into the city. He knows to find reliable charging points is close to impossible. His experience mirrors that of many potential EV users. Consider Mumbai. Not too long ago, I tinkered actively with buying an electric car. But I'm the kind of person who begins to get nervous when the needle on the fuel tank goes below half. How am I to deal with 'range anxiety' in a city where the infrastructure to charge vehicles is abysmal? Not just that, in the older apartment complex where I live, finding a charging point is both daunting and complicated. This is a common narrative. Business realities complicate matters further. Despite investments from major players like Tata Power and HPCL, partnered with aggregators such as Statiq, Charge Point Operators (CPOs) face daunting economics. Rampant theft, high maintenance costs, logistical nightmares, and persistently low utilization rates averaging below 5% nationally make infrastructure investments less attractive. Shifting standards from Bharat DC to CCS2 further complicate long-term investments. Financial hurdles persist for consumers too. EVs remain expensive upfront due to high battery costs—around 35-40% of total vehicle price—and concerns around battery degradation loom large. Replacement batteries cost a hefty ₹5-10 lakh for cars and ₹55,000- ₹100,000 for two-wheelers, severely impacting resale values and long-term ownership appeal. Zooming out, these issues underline a broader disconnect. India excels at swift digital transformations, layering software atop existing infrastructure. But electric mobility demands something sturdier—a tangible, reliable, physical backbone, beyond the quick fixes of India's celebrated 'jugaad' approach. The ambitious goal of achieving 30% EV sales by 2030 hangs precariously unless infrastructure realities are decisively addressed. The absence of real-time data on charger functionality further impedes effective policymaking. The 'ghost charger' saga is more than technical glitches or failed installations. It encapsulates India's complex dance between visionary aspirations and the mundane yet vital execution of durable infrastructure. It poses an urgent question: Can a nation celebrated for its nimble digital leaps also master the slow, meticulous groundwork required for a lasting physical transformation? The answer hangs quietly, like the first rains of an awaited monsoon. Full of promise, yet uncertain on when it will arrive. What we know is that it will arrive. Like the monsoon inevitably does.
