Bradley's Delta Kappa sorority holds annual Shamrock Run

Yahoo02-03-2025
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Local college students ran in the cold Saturday to raise money for underprivileged kids.
The 10th annual Kappa Delta Shamrock Run raised more than $2,000. It's a 4K race around the Bradley University campus.
Kappa Delta's Olivia Hagerman helped coordinate the run. She hopes to see more engagement from the community in years to come.
'I really hope that we can get more involvement from the Peoria community, not just Bradley community and the other chapters on campus, but opening it up to like high school students around here, maybe some families that want to participate, that kind of thing,' said Hagerman.
All money raised benefit the Children's Home Association of Illinois and Prevent Child Abuse Illinois.

Local women earn academic honors

Alexandria Miller Alexandria Miller of Whitestown was recently elected to membership into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society, at Bradley University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Miller is among approximately 20,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10% of seniors and 7.5% of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10% of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction. Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of undergraduate student Marcus L. Urann who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society: one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the Society has chapters on more than 300 campuses in the United States and its territories. Its mission is to 'cultivate a community that celebrates and advances the love of learning.' Grace Medici Grace Medici of Zionsville was named to the spring 2025 dean's list at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis. Peoria Park District opens new inclusive playground in West Peoria

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Children of all abilities now have a place to play at Fransiscan Recreation complex, thanks to Peoria Park District. The new playground includes a cliff wall, nature discovery table, interactive play panels like the letters maze and tic-tac-toe and much more. The sound of kids' laughter filled the air in and near the playground as a handful of kids got the first crack at the new playground. Their parents stood by, watching and enjoying the sights and sounds. Emily Cahill, the district's executive director, is glad to be able to work with the community in order to provide for the children. 'It's an opportunity for us to bring some new life to this park, which is well loved, lots of sports, a walking track that is used all the time,' she said during a mid-day press conference attended by the officials from the district and the city of West Peoria. It took roughly a year of community involvement, planning and design to get to this point. While parks within the park district are ADA compliant, Cahill said that out of the 42 total playgrounds, there are still more than a few that need to be fully replaced due to wear and tear and their age. 'We probably have somewhere in the range of 12 to 15 that need that full blown replacement and we have others that we're working on elements,' she said. Children's Museum in Peoria Celebrates a Decade Serving the Community A district priority is to be welcoming to all people, regardless of ability or age. 'One of our priorities is to make sure, as we talk about being welcoming to all that we mean to all,' she said. 'So really prioritizing this inclusion effort, making sure that we are representative and accessible to everyone, regardless of their physical ability, is something that we have prioritized and will continue to prioritize.' The district is working with smaller communities in the area to update or upgrade playgrounds that need it. Cahill even went as far as to say that Columbia Park on McClure Avenue could have a new playground sooner rather than later. 'We're really focusing in on those areas that need the most attention first, and then we'll work through you'll see new playgrounds at Columbia by the end of the year.'
