Karan Johar breaks silence on selling 50 per cent of Dharma Productions to Adar Poonawalla for Rs 1000 crore: 'I needed funds to grow'

Inherited his father
's reputation, not financial security
Speaking about the evolution of
Productions,
admitted that while his father Yash Johar founded the company, its success only began post-1998 with his directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. 'Before Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, we had five flops in a row. What I inherited from my father was goodwill, not money,' Karan shared, highlighting how the emotional and reputational legacy of his father fueled his journey, not a financial head start.
Karan also reflected on the earlier collaborative model of filmmaking at Dharma, revealing that most profits had to be shared with partners. 'We couldn't finance films on our own ability, so our biggest hits had partners. But I wanted profitability to stay within Dharma. That's when I stopped doing collaborative projects,' he said.
Post-1998, hits like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna turned the tide for Dharma Productions.
But it wasn't an easy journey. After the death of his father in 2004, Karan leaned on his childhood friend and current CEO of Dharma,
. 'He left his life in London overnight to help me. Till date, I have zero business acumen, but a strong instinct. Apoorva handles the business, I handle the creative,' Karan added.

Explaining why he brought Adar Poonawalla on board as an equity partner, Karan said, 'In 2023, we realised we had to scale.

Organic growth would have taken us 5–7 more years. We needed capital. Today, I'm very happy with Adar. He's a wonderful human being with sharp instincts. Now I feel accountable—this is someone else's money. I have to deliver success.'

Karan also addressed criticisms that Dharma didn't have a particularly profitable 2024. 'Kill was critically appreciated, Mr & Mrs Mahi made money, Bad Newz was profitable, Jigra broke even.
We're now producing our first Punjabi film Akaal, and Dhadak 2 is coming soon. We're bullish,' he asserted.
Reflecting on the highs and lows of showbiz, Karan concluded with characteristic candour: 'I don't take success seriously or failure to heart. I don't mind a flop. I just don't like average films. If I'm wrong, tell me—I'll learn and move forward.'

Thug Life Box Office Collection Day 3: Kamal Haasan's Film Mints Rs 28 Crore
Kamal Haasan's Thug Life collected Rs 28 crore on Day 3 but is receiving a lukewarm response at the box office. The film also stars Silambarasan TR and Trisha Krishnan. Kamal Haasan's much-anticipated action drama Thug Life continues its impressive box office run. On Day 3, the film maintained its steady momentum, collecting Rs 28 crore across all languages. Mani Ratnam's Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR and Trisha Krishnan-starrer Thug Life is unfortunately receiving a lukewarm response at the box office. Despite facing multiple challenges, Thug Life is putting up a determined fight at the box office. After a promising opening with Rs 15.5 crore, the film witnessed a sharp drop on Friday, earning Rs 7.15 crore which is a decline of nearly 54 per cent. Saturday saw a further dip, with the film collecting around Rs 5.84 crore, bringing the total to approximately Rs 28.49 crore in India. The Mani Ratnam directorial managed a 35.62 per cent occupancy for its Tamil version on Saturday. However, the film's performance has been impacted by a few setbacks including comparisons to Haasan's iconic Nayakan, a disruption in Karnataka due to a language dispute, and stiff competition from Housefull 5. Thug Life stars a fantastic ensemble including Trisha, Silambarasan, Joju George, Ashok Selvan, Nasser, Abhirami, and more. The music is composed by the legendary AR Rahman, with stunning visuals captured by cinematographer Ravi K Chandran. The movie's editing is handled by A Sreekar Prasad. A part of the review of the film by News18 read, 'Thug Life ends up becoming a film that is torn between telling two stories. One is the unkillable and morally ambiguous king who continues to defy death. This story of Rangaray Sakthivel is a stand-in or metaphor for Kamal Haasan himself and how the actor has stood the test of time. However, this is half-done as the film is also about Amar and his tragedy. The climax is supposed to complete the circle. Now, the 'shield' gets shielded but still, the arc isn't organic and the irony kind of gets lost in the immortality of Sakthivel." Before Thug Life hit theatres, Kamal Haasan promoted the film with great energy. He was especially happy to team up with director Mani Ratnam again after 38 years. Their last film together was the classic Nayakan in 1987. Kamal spoke warmly about the reunion during promotions, calling it a special moment in his career. As per ANI, he told the press, 'Every film is a challenge, especially when you add another director like Mani Ratnam and a story that is so interesting. Fortunately, he included me in the story's preparation. I gave him an idea. Most of the time I was getting vegetables and helping him make it more tasty. That's what I did.
