Bengaluru's bike taxi riders in a fix over ban, urge Karnataka govt to reverse crackdown
Acting on behalf of thousands of drivers state-wide, the association submitted a formal appeal seeking lawful recognition for bike taxis and the introduction of a structured regulatory framework to eliminate confusion and harassment.
This meeting comes after several ignored communications to key political leaders, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and MP Rahul Gandhi, the report stated. The Congress government in Karnataka came under fire for its silence particularly due to its recent passage of the Gig Worker Welfare Bill, a legislation meant to protect workers in flexible job markets.
'My phone won't stop ringing - 250 to 300 drivers call me every day, asking for help. And I don't know what to tell them. Should we lose our livelihoods because the government has no policy for bike taxis? We don't want chaos. We need regulation, not a ban,' Mohammed Salim, President, Namma Bike Taxi Association, said, as quoted by ANI.
Bike taxi drivers said there are rising tensions with auto-rickshaw unions, while commuters also expressed frustration over a spike in Bengaluru's traffic as well as auto rickshaw and taxi fares after the crackdown on bike taxis.

The Central Government's Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines of 2020 classify bike taxis as legitimate under Section 2(7), but Karnataka has yet to enact corresponding state regulations. Although an Electric Bike Taxi Policy was introduced in 2021, it was quietly repealed in 2024 without explanation, leaving both service providers and users in a regulatory vacuum.

PM inaugurates ₹2,000 crore highway projects for Haryana
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated two major national highway projects worth ₹2,000 crore which will directly benefit Haryana. These are construction of two new four-lane connectivity roads to Sonepat and Bahadurgarh under the Urban Extension Road-2 project. The chief minister said that Haryana, being the industrial and agricultural hub of northern India, would be the biggest beneficiary of these projects. 'These key projects will not only boost exports, imports and investments by ensuring direct connectivity from Kundli, Sonepat, Bahadurgarh, Gurugram and Manesar to Delhi airport, but will also provide relief from traffic congestion in the region,' Saini said. Saini said that the Centre is creating an extensive network of roadways, railways and airways connectivity. Listing out the projects which will be to Haryana's advantage, Saini named the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, Rail Coach Repair Factory, Kundli-Manesar-Palwal and Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal Expressways, Gurugram-Sikanderpur and Faridabad-Ballabhgarh Metro Links, the country's first elevated railway track in Rohtak, the Rohtak-Meham-Hansi railway line, the National Cancer Institute at AIIMS Jhajjar, and AIIMS in Rewari. He said that Haryana recently received the gift of a metro corridor from Rithala to Kundli. The chief minister also said that these initiatives will give a new impetus to investment, employment and industrial development in the state, further strengthening Haryana's contribution to the national economy.

Opposition likely to field a non-political face
Hours after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced Maharashtra governor CP Radhakrishnan as the Vice President candidate, a number of INDIA group parties pitched for an eminent person, who adheres to Constitution and democratic values but does not belong to any major party, as the Opposition candidate. Congress president Kharge has called a meeting of Opposition floor leaders on Monday. The V-P poll issue might be discussed there, too.(PTI FILE PHOTO) The Opposition is expected to announce its candidate by Tuesday. In the previous election, former Congress minister Margaret Alva was fielded against NDA's Jagdeep Dhankhar. The move irked the Trinamool Congress (TMC) — then the second largest Opposition party, and it decided not to support Alva. To avoid any such mistake, top Congress leaders have indicated that the pick for the upcoming election will be a 'INDIA bloc' candidate and not a party's candidate. A senior floor leader of a non-Congress Opposition party told HT, 'We prefer an eminent person as the candidate and not a politician. But, that person would adhere to the values of the Constitution and democracy.' A Congress leader also said that it is open to fielding a non-politician nominee. 'We will have a detailed discussion with all the leaders of the INDIA bloc. It is not necessary that the candidate must be a politician,' he said A non-Congress candidate who doesn't belong to any political party also makes for a better strategy vis-à-vis parties such as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) or TMC and fence sitters such as Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) or Biju Janata Dal (BJD). At least eleven AAP MPs (barring Swati Maliwal) might have reservation for politicians from other parties but might vote if some eminent personality is fielded. Even as AAP quit the INDIA group, it joined the Opposition's march to the Election Commission last week. On August 8, after the dinner hosted by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi at his residence, 14 senior Opposition leaders including former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former CMs Akhilesh Yadav, Uddhav Thackeray and Farooq Abdullah, TMC's Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O'Brien and CPI(M)'s MA Baby joined Rahul Gandhi for another round of meeting where the issue of Vice President election was briefly discussed. Many leaders supported the idea of fielding a non-politician for the September 9 polls. In 2017, the Opposition had fielded Gopal Krishna Gandhi, ex-diplomat and former West Bengal governor, as its candidate against NDA's Venkaiah Naidu. According to functionaries, Kharge has already discussed the Vice Presidential polls with Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, and Congress general secretary KC Venugopal. On Monday, Kharge has called a meeting of Opposition floor leaders. The VP poll issue might be discussed there, too.

‘Rahul Gandhi will not win in Bihar…': West Bengal LoP Suvendu Adhikari

The Chief Election Commisioner of India on Sunday refuted allegations of "vote theft" by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and asked him to either furnish a signed affidavit or apologise to the nation for his remarks. The CEC also termed the allegations of bias by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabhas as an "insult" to the Constitution of India."...An affidavit will have to be given, or an apology should be made to the country. Teesra koi vikalp nahi (There is no third option.) If the affidavit is not received within 7 days, it means that all these allegations are baseless..." CEC Gyanesh Kumar said while addressing mediapersons at a briefing at the National Media Centre in the national capital. Rahul Gandhi had on August 7 addressed a press conference in New Delhi, in which he presented Congress's research on voting in the Mahadevapura Assembly in Karnataka, a part of the Bangalore Central parliamentary constituency. Gandhi alleged "vote chori" (vote theft) of 1,00,250 votes, including duplicate voters, invalid addresses, and bulk registrations of votes at single locations. Rahul Gandhi further pointed out an instance of 80 people registered in a single address in Mahadevapura. Rahul Gandhi had alleged that the poll body is "destroying evidence" through the directive deleting CCTV footage from polling booths. He alleged that the EC was only preserving CCTV and webcasting footage of the election process for only 45 days after the whole process is completed, unless the election result is challenged in court.
