Safeguard duty to curb influx of steel import from select countries: ISA
The government's decision to impose a 12 per cent provisional
safeguard duty
on imported
flat steel products
will help curb "the influx of cheap imports, primarily from China, South Korea, and Japan", the
Indian Steel Association
(ISA) said on Wednesday. According to the industry body, these countries alone contributed around 78 per cent to the overall imports in FY25.
"This measure aims to curb the influx of cheap
steel imports
, primarily from China, South Korea, and Japan," the ISA said in a statement.
Further, ISA said India became a net importer of finished steel for the second consecutive year, with imports reaching a nine-year high of 9.5 million metric tonnes in 2024-25.

ISA said that the DGTR has recommended this duty following an investigation initiated in December 2024.
The probe revealed that the sharp increase in imports of non-alloy and alloy steel flat products was causing significant injury to domestic producers, it said.

"We are grateful for the government's decisive move to impose a 12 per cent safeguard duty on flat steel products, much needed to stop imports arriving at predatory prices. This support will help investors to focus with renewed vigour for a capacity build-up towards 300 million tonnes by 2030 for an

and will set the cornerstone for a
Viksit Bharat
," ISA president Naveen Jindal was quoted as saying in the statement.
The government on Monday imposed a 12 per cent provisional safeguard duty for 200 days on five steel product categories, including hot rolled coils, sheets and plates, to protect domestic players from surge in imports.
The decision follows a recommendation for the same by the Commerce Ministry's investigation arm DGTR. Last month, the DGTR suggested to impose the duty.
"...the Central Government after considering the said findings of the Director General (Trade Remedies), hereby imposes...a provisional safeguard duty at the rate of twelve per cent ad valorem," according to a notification of the Department of Revenue.
The government's action aligns India with other countries seeking to control foreign steel imports and
protect domestic manufacturing
sectors. By creating a level playing field, the safeguard duty is expected to reinvigorate investor confidence and accelerate the sector's contribution to national growth, ISA said.

'I doubt Mr. Modi's advisors are even aware of it': Jairam Ramesh recalls India's historic role in Cyprus' independence
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Monday highlighted India's pivotal role in supporting Cypriot independence in the 1950s under Jawaharlal Nehru, which he said he doubted Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's "advisors are even aware of." The Congress leader's remarks in a social media post come amid the ongoing visit of PM Modi to Cyprus. Ramesh recalled India's leadership at the Afro-Asian Bandung Conference, the close ties between Nehru and Archbishop Makarios III. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You See A Coin In Your Car Door Handle, Walk Away Articles Stone Undo In a post on X, Jairam questioned whether the current government is even aware of this shared legacy, emphasising the strategic and historical importance of Indo-Cypriot relations . — Jairam_Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) Live Events "The Prime Minister is in Cyprus on his way to Canada. Of course, He would have us believe that it is a pure coincidence that a key figure in the Modscam has Cypriot citizenship. The Cyprus-based fund New Leaina has reportedly about $420 million in Adani companies. The 'ultimate beneficial owners' of this fund are linked to Amicorp, which is believed to have set up at least seven Adani promoter entities, seventeen offshore shell companies linked to Mr. Vinod Adani, and three Mauritius-based offshore investors in Adani Group stock. All these transactions are part of the ongoing SEBI investigations which have been hampered by lack of sharing of financial information by these and other tax-haven countries and lack of pressure by India," he said. He recalled that Cyprus gained independence from British rule on August 16, 1960. In the 1950s, India spearheaded the international campaign for the full decolonisation of the island. "Nehru had, in fact, ensured the participation of the Cypriot leader and freedom fighter Archbishop Makarios III at the historic Afro-Asian Bandung Conference held in Indonesia in late April 1955. Makarios was the only European to attend that summit. Two years later VK Krishna Menon had created a stir at the United Nations in New York by introducing a resolution on Cyprus and by his impassioned speech. Page 1 of the New York Times had carried news of this resolution prominently," Jairam said. The Congress leader also mentioned that the "charismatic Archbishop", who became the first President of the Cypriot Republic, himself was to visit New Delhi in November 1962. "He spent two weeks in India. When Nehru died, a public holiday and a day of mourning was announced on May 27, 1964. In the early 1980s, a busy and scenic road in the Golf Links locality of our capital came to be named after the Archbishop although the signage splits the two words!" he said. Jairam Ramesh also mentioned that the three distinguished Indian army men--Lt. Gen P. S. Gyani, the legendary Gen K. S. Thimayya, and Lt. Gen Dewan Prem Chand--headed the United Nations Force In Cyprus (UNFICYP) between 1964 and 1974. "Two scholars have just written a fine piece on the UNFICYP that also brings out India's key role in the emergence of the Republic of Cyprus. I doubt that Mr. Modi's advisors are even aware of it," Jairam Ramesh added. "In the context of today's geopolitics it is worthwhile to recall that India's championing of the independence of Cyprus in the 1950s and thereafter became a sore point in our bilateral relations with Turkey," the Congress leader said. In a significant diplomatic outreach, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Cyprus on Sunday afternoon (local time), marking the first-ever visit by an Indian PM to the island nation. The visit is seen as an important stopover ahead of the G7 Summit in Canada and a reflection of India's renewed focus on strengthening ties with European partners.

Vietnam lawmakers abolish district-level government
Vietnam lawmakers abolish district-level government Vietnam's National Assembly approved amendments to the constitution on Monday to abolish an entire level of government, as part of major reforms to the way the communist country is run. Lawmakers voted unanimously to do away with district level administration, reducing the governmental structure to two layers -- provinces and communes. The move is the latest in a series of drastic changes to Vietnamese government aimed at saving billions of dollars in expenditure by cutting one in five public sector jobs. Last week lawmakers in the assembly -- a rubber-stamp body in a one-party system -- voted to merge most of the country's provinces and cities, cutting nearly 80,000 jobs. In February they slashed the number of government ministries, resulting in 23,000 job losses. The dramatic changes echo the steps taken by US President Donald Trump and Argentina's Javier Milei to take an axe to government spending. But in a communist system where working for the state has long meant a job for life, the reforms piloted by party chief To Lam have caused some unease. Lam, the Communist Party general secretary and top national leader, has said the drastic restructuring is needed if Vietnam is to achieve "fast, stable and sustainable development" in its quest to be a middle-income country by 2030. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2 & 3 BHK Sky-High Homes @ ₹1.33 Cr in Mira Road Sunteck Sky Park Learn More Undo The National Assembly also voted Monday to reorganise the lowest level of government, reducing the number of communes from over 10,000 to around 3,300. With this "important reform", the size of communes will be expanded, minister of Interior Pham Thi Thanh Tra said. The move will mean eliminating around 120,000 part-time jobs at commune level, Tra said last week. The governmental reforms follow a huge, wide-ranging anti-corruption drive that has seen dozens of senior government figures and top business leaders caught up. Export-dependent manufacturing hub Vietnam is aiming for eight percent economic growth this year after hitting 7.1 percent last year. But a 46 percent trade tariff threatened by Trump is causing anxiety, and Vietnamese negotiators are locked in talks with their US counterparts to find a solution.

Volatility to linger, but domestic liquidity offers support: Sunil Subramaniam
"I see that this next week will continue to be volatile, but perhaps not as volatile as this week because I see fund managers stepping in to buy selectively," says Sunil Subramaniam , Market Expert. Now, despite starting this week on a positive note, the markets have seen a lot of profit booking this week. They have ended just above that 24,700 mark on the Nifty despite scaling 25,200 during the week. So, to what extent is this a reflection of global geopolitical tensions versus domestic factors? Sunil Subramaniam: It is entirely global geopolitical tensions. If you take away today's market movement and do it as of yesterday, it will paint a very different picture. So, clearly today's strong reaction to the global political Israel attack on Iran has wiped out a lot of gains and naturally, they have been profit booking because FIIs who have come in fairly strongly over the last few weeks have been booking profits there. DIIs are continuing to remain buyers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Heads Turn as Walgreens Shoppers Discover 87¢ ED Pills fridayplans Learn More Undo But in a market like today which has been under severe pressure because geopolitics, even DIIs would have stayed cautious and they stepped in into buying later in the day. So, the markets obviously recovered from the start to those and they have been waiting for the correction to buy in, so that is why you see net-net a very negative picture. But DII flows continue to be strong as you mentioned the SIP book also coming in very strong and almost 20,000 crores of pure equity funds plus another 5,000 crores in the hybrid category. So, about 23,000-24,000 crores of additional cash has come in the hands of just mutual fund managers. So, I see that in the coming week while because of the geopolitics continuing, there will be continued volatility, you will find buying support at on specific sectors and stocks from the domestic fund managers. So, I see that this next week will continue to be volatile, but perhaps not as volatile as this week because I see fund managers stepping in to buy selectively. Live Events I want to talk to you about gold as well. Commodities have been the focus today. Now gold, it gained about a percent today. It has crossed that 34,020 level mark today. It is the third day of gains that coming in for the yellow metal. In fact, in 2025 it has seen gains of about 28% that is in 2025. So, from here on against the backdrop of the Iran and Israel tensions especially which has led to a rise in demand for safe haven, where do you expect the yellow metal headed going forward? Sunil Subramaniam: So I think that definitely over the next year I see a double-digit return coming in from gold and the reason being that not only that geopolitical tensions are a positive for gold, but I also see that given the pressure on the US economy, I see that the combination of inflation there and slowing growth will lead to a Fed rate cut sometime in the near future in the year and I see at least one or two rate cuts from Fed coming out by the end of the year. So, overall, a continuing geopolitical uncertain scenario plus a weakening dollar is a big positive for gold, but not to expect the kind of 25-28% returns going forward because already there has been a lot of rise but definitely I will see that about a double digit return over the next year from gold and I would say that a 10% to 15% allocation in portfolios for gold would be a healthy thing to keep.
