Paul McCartney may be one of the most iconic musicians in history, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have his own music heroes. The former Beatles bassist and songwriter has albums that hold a special place in his heart, and now, he's revealing the three records he calls the 'soundtrack' of his life.
In a post on the news section of his official website, McCartney responded to a fan question. It read, "My partner and I have recently been discussing the albums and songs that have soundtracked our lives. Are there any albums that take you back to certain periods in your life? And does performing your own music evoke similar memories?"
The music legend responded, "Yeah, definitely. My favorite albums by other people tend to be: Music from Big Pink by The Band, Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys, and Harvest by Neil Young."
McCartney added, "They are the three classics that I love to listen to, and they all remind me of certain times in my life. When I perform my own songs, the great thing is that they often bring back memories of recording them. That can often entail memories of John [Lennon] and George [Harrison] in the studio, sweet memories!"

Music from Big Pink, released in 1968, was The Band's debut album. Recorded after the group settled into a house in upstate New York, known as "Big Pink," the album featured a soulful blend of rock, folk, country, and blues. Tracks like 'The Weight' and 'Tears of Rage,' co-written with Bob Dylan, remain standards to this day.
Pet Sounds, released by The Beach Boys in 1966, is widely regarded as one of the most influential albums in pop music history. With tracks like 'God Only Knows,' 'Wouldn't It Be Nice,' and 'Caroline, No,' Pet Sounds redefined pop albums and also inspired countless artists, including McCartney's group, The Beatles, who cited it as a major influence on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Finally, Neil Young's Harvest, released in 1972, is one of his most beloved and best-selling albums. Blending folk, rock, and country, the album features some of Young's most iconic songs, including 'Heart of Gold,' 'Old Man,' and 'The Needle and the Damage Done.'
McCartney's been influenced by all of these artists substantially. He can be heard launching into an ad-libbed 'take a load off, Fanny' from The Band's "The Weight" toward the end of the Beatles' promotional video for 'Hey Jude.'
The singer was interviewed for the Pet Sounds Sessions box set, as reported by The Paul McCartney Project. The former Beatle said, "Pet Sounds blew me out of the water. First of all, it was Brian's writing. I love the album so much. I've just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life—I figure no one is educated musically 'til they've heard that album. I was into the writing and the songs."
McCartney discussed Neil Young's influence on the Adam Buxton Podcast. "He's influenced a lot of people. I'll often hear a record on the radio, and I'll just go 'Oh, is that Neil's new one?' And then, 'No, it's another band.' And he's a great bloke, too. I mean, I do know him quite well. I've known him since the 60s. He is a cool guy."

Young doesn't sing a note for nearly five minutes as the intro of the song slowly swells. The performance stretches out for a stunning 14 minutes. That's a good three minutes longer than the renditions that opened up every show of Young's 2024 tour with Crazy Horse. (The record, however, was set at a Rotterdam show back in 2001 when the song went on for 22 minutes.) In Norway, Young included the lost verse of 'Cortez the Killer' that nobody heard until last year. The verse had been rumored for decades, but wasn't confirmed until Young did a Zoom with paid members of the Neil Young Archives, and said he recently stumbled upon his original lyrics. They were unveiled to the public on the opening night of the Crazy Horse tour in April 2024. 'I floated on the water,' Young sang. 'I ate that ocean wave/Two weeks after the slaughter/I was living in a cave/They came too late to get me/But there's no one here to set me free/From this rocky grave/To that snowed-out ocean wave.' 'Down by the River' in Denmark topped out at a relatively brief nine minutes, as opposed to the 24-minute one from Dresden, Germany, in 2014, and was also filmed by a fan. 'We are now on the highway to Bergen,' he wrote, 'a winding beauty, passing giant rock formations and verdant trees and growth, incredible waterways with rapids opening onto large lakes. Old buildings in wonderful condition on the banks. Snow capped mountain peaks above. Tunnels up to 26 kilometers in length, carved through rock. Natural rock for 26 kilometers! I am in awe of the beautify and power of these projects. These Norwegians are an awesome building people.' The tour continues June 26 at Malahide Castle in Dublin, Ireland. And on June 28, it hits the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in England. A North American leg begins Aug. 8 at PNC Music Pavilion Charlotte, North Carolina. Instagram now lets you share Spotify songs with sound to Stories
Instagram announced Monday that it's finally adding the ability for users to listen to previews of songs that they've shared from Spotify to Stories. While Instagram has long allowed users to share Spotify songs to their Stories, it would do so without sound, and simply provide a link to the song on the streaming platform. Now, when a user posts a song to their Story, viewers will be able to listen to a preview of the song right within Instagram. The small change, yet notable change makes it easier to share and discover music on the platform without having to leave the app. The move comes a few weeks after the social network rolled out a similar capability for Instagram Notes. Users can now stream songs from Spotify directly to their Instagram Notes, letting their followers see and check out what kind of music they're into in real-time. The new capabilities could help position Instagram as a hub for music discovery and, in turn, encourage people to spend more time on the app. Building out music features could also make Instagram more competitive with TikTok, which is already dominating the space and influencing music charts globally. Neil Young Blocks the BBC From Livestreaming His Glastonbury Set
Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts will headline Glastonbury this coming Saturday, but breaking from tradition, the performance will not broadcast on the BBC. Back in January, after Young was among the first artists named for the 2025 Glastonbury, the rocker announced he was pulling out of his headlining gig due to the festival's partnership with the BBC. 'We will not be playing Glastonbury on this tour because it is a corporate turn-off, and not for me like it used to be.' However, days later, Young rejoined the festival, writing that he left 'due to an error in the information received' and that 'happily, the festival is back on our itinerary and we look forward to playing!' Six months later, it appears Young's issues were with the BBC and not Glastonbury: When the broadcaster revealed its festival schedule earlier this week, Young was noticeably absent, as per his wishes. 'At the artist's request, we won't be live streaming Neil Young's set,' a BBC spokesperson said in a statement to the Telegraph. 'Our plans, including those for our TV highlights shows and on-demand coverage, continue to be finalized right up to and during the festival.' Viewers will instead be shown Charli XCX's Glastonbury set while Young is headlining the Pyramid Stage. Young last performed at Glastonbury on June 26, 2009, with the BBC only airing portions of his set. 'The BBC has spent the last couple of months talking to Neil's management about how much of his set we might be able to show on TV, radio and online over Glastonbury weekend,' they wrote in a statement to fans wondering why the whole thing wasn't shown. 'Neil Young's career has been conducted on his own terms. Last night Neil's management agreed to let TV and radio broadcast five songs as they watched and listened to his performance. They believe in the live event and retaining its mystery and that of their artist.'
