Mossel Bay man dead, another man missing in Gouritsmond boat tragedy
The body of one man has been recovered and one man remains missing after the fishing boat that the two men had been on was found washed ashore east of Gouritsmond yesterday.
Mossel Bay Advertiser reports that the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said in a statement that police divers (Water Policing and Diving Services) are continuing to search for the man, aged 58, missing at Gouritsmond.
In the statement, JC Roos, NSRI Mossel Bay station commander, said that at 05:13 yesterday, the NSRI Mossel Bay duty crew was activated following reports of a local 21-foot fishing ski-boat overdue in returning to Gouritsmond.
It had launched from Gouritsmond, between Still Bay and Mossel Bay, on Saturday afternoon, with the two men – both experienced skippers and experienced fishermen – on board.
The boat was due back early yesterday, the NSRI believes, but when it did not return, the alarm was raised.
The NSRI Mossel Bay rescue craft Spirit of Safmarine III and St Blaise Rescuer were launched, while NSRI Still Bay launched the NSRI Still Bay rescue craft Breede Rescuer.
The NSRI Emergency Operations Centre, NSRI Operations headquarters and NSRI Mossel Bay plotted search grids while Telkom Maritime Radio Services broadcast an all-ships alert on the marine VHF radio emergency frequency.
A number of local craft and local fishing vessels, private aircraft (private fixed wing aircraft, remote drone aircraft and private helicopters), the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter, the SAPS, Police WPDS and WC Government Health EMS rescue squad, joined the NSRI in the extensive search and rescue operation.
The boat was found, and the body of one of the men was found on the shoreline.
The men's family are being supported by the NSRI, Chaplain's Services and police.
The NSRI appealed to the local community, maritime community and vessels at sea to keep an eye out for the missing man.

Baboon still on the loose in Joburg despite ongoing capture efforts
Baboon still on the loose in Joburg despite ongoing capture efforts Authorities are facing challenges in their efforts to capture a baboon that has been on the loose for six days in the Northcliff area of Johannesburg. Northcliff Melville Times reports that, according to Bhaai Cassim, the secretary of the Johannesburg Sub-District Community Police Board, the situation has become increasingly complex due to an abundance of food and water sources – including streams, ponds, and gardens – which have made it difficult to lure the animal into traps. He reports that half-eaten pet food left outside and fruit trees in gardens are providing additional sustenance for the baboon, further complicating trapping efforts. 'Setting up traps poses a problem as food in the traps prove less than effective, when there is an abundance of food available.' Cassim adds that locating the baboon has also proven to be a daunting task, as the animal has numerous hiding spots in the urban environment. Its mobility has become a nightmare for capture teams, as the baboon is constantly on the move and seldom frequents the same locality. 'A trap set up in one position may need to be moved if the baboon avoids the area,' Cassim notes. 'Then, as is often the case, the baboon may decide to return to the area where the trap was previously set.' He expresses concern that the baboon may injure itself, either crossing busy roads or getting into an altercation. 'Our fear is an altercation between the baboon and guard dogs, which will result in serious injury, in which case animals may have to be put down.' Cassim states that the baboon was last sighted this morning near a residence where a trap had been installed on Frederick Drive. With the baboon still on the loose, authorities continue working to ensure its safe return. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Relief as Pretoria woman and dog found safe after 5-day search
There is relief across Pretoria and beyond as Celeste van Aswegen and her dog, Shadow, have been found safe, bringing an end to a tense five-day search. According to Pretoria Rekord, it is believed she was found last night at a lodge in KZN. Celeste was reported missing on Saturday after last being seen near Menlyn Shopping Centre on Atterbury Road, driving a grey Volkswagen Amarok. She and her dog, Shadow, had not been seen or heard from since, sparking widespread concern and a co-ordinated search effort involving family, friends, the public, and private investigator Mike Bolhuis. Family members confirmed that both Van Aswegen and Shadow have been located and are safe. Details surrounding their whereabouts during the missing period have not yet been made public. What to include in a missing person report When reporting a loved one missing, it is crucial to provide clear and detailed information to assist search teams and authorities. Paul Visser from the Pretoria ICE Community Network shared the following checklist of essential details that should be included in a missing person's report: Start by stating the location where the person was last seen and their full name and age. Include a physical description such as height, weight, hair colour, and eye colour. Describe the clothing they were last seen wearing as accurately as possible. It is also important to note the exact time and place they were last seen, as well as whether a missing person case number has been opened. Indicate if their cellphone is on or off, and whether there is any tracking device in their vehicle. If the missing person has a known medical condition, this must be clearly stated. Finally, provide a short summary of the circumstances surrounding their disappearance – for example, their destination, who they were with, or any unusual behaviour prior to going missing. Sharing complete and accurate information from the start can make a vital difference in locating a missing person quickly and safely. Diddy verdict looms: Will music mogul face life in prison or walk free?
It has been seven weeks of revealing testimony in the Diddy trial. The federal trial of hip hop royalty, Sean 'Diddy' Combs, will come to a dramatic end this week. The rapper and producer faces charges, including racketeering, sex trafficking, and transportation for prostitution, stemming from allegations that he led a criminal enterprise spanning decades. The hip hop legend could do life in prison should he be found guilty. The prosecution presented 34 witnesses and has since rested. The list of witnesses included former partners, sex workers, Casandra 'Cassie' Ventura, and a woman whose identity has been protected and is identified as Jane or Jane Doe. These women testified to being coerced into sexual encounters that were driven by drugs, and that these instances often involved escorts and lavish 'freak-off' parties. Video footage was also introduced along with text messages and financial records to further drive home allegations around abuse, intimidation, and manipulation. The rapper's defence team elected to present no witnesses. Diddy did not take the stand either. His lawyers focused their energies on cross-examination and introduced evidence to illustrate how these encounters were consensual. Diddy told the judge that the choice not to take the stand was solely his decision after intensive deliberation with his counsel. A few of the allegations against the man who unearthed talents like The Notorious B.I.G. and Mary J. Blige have been dropped. These include allegations of attempted kidnapping, attempted arson involving rapper Kid Cudi, and aiding and abetting sex trafficking. The prosecution will set out to cement the portrait they have painted of Diddy as a violent predator. A person who uses his influence and his social cache to take advantage of women. The defence will attempt to convince the jury that Diddy is a victim of opportunistic individuals whose motivation is centred on resentments and fiscal gains. If the Bad Boy Entertainment founder is found guilty, he could face life in prison. More than just his freedom hangs in the balance as a guilty verdict could have detrimental implications for his legacy as a legend in the hip hop industry.
