KMRL plans to introduce boat services in Edappally, Chilavannoor canals
With the State government recently granting administrative approval for the ₹3,716-crore Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System (IURWTS) project — aimed at widening, dredging, and making six canals in Kochi navigable — Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), which will implement the project, has announced plans to introduce boat services in Edappally and Chilavannoor canals.
Boat services have been planned at 30-minute intervals along a newly navigable 11.5-km stretch from Muttar to Chitrapuzha via the Edappally canal. A fleet of 10 new boats, each with a vertical clearance of 3.5 metres, will be introduced for the purpose, according to the metro agency.

'In addition, Water Metro ferries operating on the Vyttila–Thevara route will use the revitalised Chilavannoor canal to provide access to Elamkulam metro station, enhancing integration between multiple modes of transport. Aimed at promoting tourism and recreation, a Marine Drive-model waterfront is being planned along the canal featuring landscaped walkways and water sports facilities. The area is expected to become a new recreational hub, promoting wellness among the public,' said Loknath Behera, managing director, KMRL.
'The IURWTS will rejuvenate canals with water transport, walkways, and water sports activities, ease monsoon flooding, and help address persistent waste management issues in Kochi,' added Mr. Behera.
Under the project, six major canals — Perandoor, Chilavannoor, Edappally, Thevara, Konthuruthy, and Market canal — will be deepened, widened, and beautified. The rejuvenated canals will have a minimum width of 16.5 metres, while walkways and green spaces will be developed along their banks, according to the agency.
A new 90-metre-long bridge on Bund Road and the reconstruction of a bridge on Subash Chandra Bose Road near the Chilavannoor canal will streamline water flow and help reduce flooding during the monsoon, said metro sources.
'Alongside this, four sewage treatment plants have been mulled at Elamkulam, Vennala, Perandoor, and Muttar. The ₹1,325-crore project is being executed by KMRL in collaboration with the Kerala Water Authority. This integrated approach will enhance mobility, reduce flooding, and help reinvent Kochi's identity as a water-centric urban haven, they added.

Cabinet clears two DAs, Metro, Manmohan varsity & more
HYDERABAD: The state Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, on Thursday approved the release of two pending Dearness Allowances (DA) for government employees and accepted several key demands raised by employee unions. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, addressing the media after the meeting, said one DA will be released immediately, while the second will be disbursed after six months. Welfare of employees To support employee welfare, the Cabinet approved the establishment of a Health Trust with the chief secretary as chairman. The government will contribute Rs 500 per employee, matching the employee contribution, to provide comprehensive health benefits. Metro expansion and infrastructure boost The Cabinet approved the expansion of the Metro Rail network at an estimated cost of Rs 19,579 crore. I&PR Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy said expansion will cover three corridors — Shamshabad to Future City (39.6 km), JBS to Medchal (24.5 km) and JBS to Shamirpet (22 km) — totalling 86.1 km. The proposals will be forwarded to the Union government for approval, Vikramarka disclosed. He also revealed that the Cabinet okayed proposals for construction of 5,190 km of Roads and Buildings (R&B) roads and 7,947 km of Panchayat Raj roads under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), to be completed over the next two and a half years. The government has allocated Rs 16,780 crore for Panchayat Raj roads, and Rs 16,414 crore for R&B roads. Water Metro going green; betting big on solar power
KOCHI: In a major push for sustainable transportation, the Kochi Water Metro Ltd (KWML) has embarked on an ambitious project to set up a solar farm at Purakkad, in Alappuzha, besides implementing rooftop solar-panel systems at its terminals and buildings. This is in line with the ambitious plan of the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL), its parent, to go carbon neutral by 2030. 'We've identified 90 acres of land in Purakkad. We expect the revenue department to hand over the land soon. The plan is to set up a CIAL-model solar farm that will produce 17 MW of power daily. Once we start generating electricity, we will enter into a trade off with the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) through its power grid scheme, whereby an equivalent amount to power will be made available in Kochi to fuel the entire water metro fleet,' Sajan P John, chief operating officer (COO) of KWML, told TNIE.
