Malaysia, Egypt And South Africa Call For Immediate End To Israeli Aggression In Gaza

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 7 (Bernama) -- Malaysia stands united with Egypt and South Africa in demanding an immediate halt to all forms of aggression and oppression by the Israeli regime in Gaza.
This common stance was reaffirmed during separate meetings between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Egyptian counterpart, Mostafa Madbouly, as well as South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Speaking from the BRICS Leaders' Summit, Anwar said both Malaysia and Egypt agreed that the international community must no longer remain silent in the face of ongoing human rights violations.
During his meeting with Ramaphosa, Anwar also expressed Malaysia's deep appreciation for South Africa's unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, including its firm stance at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
South Africa was the first country to bring Israel before the ICJ over the genocide in Gaza, which has claimed more than 56,000 lives and devastated the region.
Anwar added that both the Egyptian and South African leaders shared a commitment to further strengthen bilateral ties through cooperation in multiple sectors.
Malaysia and South Africa agreed to review existing partnerships and explore new avenues to expand strategic investments in the agriculture, automotive, tourism and halal industries.
Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to deepening ties with South Africa as a key trading partner on the African continent, in line with the spirit of South-South solidarity and cross-continental MADANI cooperation.

Israel's push on Gaza City triggers mass protests, global alarm
FEARING an Israeli onslaught could come soon, some Palestinian families began leaving eastern areas of Gaza City, now under constant Israeli bombardment, for points to the west and some explored evacuating further south. Israel's plan to seize control of Gaza City has stirred alarm abroad and at home where tens of thousands of Israelis held some of the largest protests seen since the war began, urging a deal to end the fighting and free the remaining 50 hostages held by Palestinian fighters in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described Gaza City as Hamas' last bastion. But, with Israel already holding 75 per cent of Gaza, the military has warned that expanding the offensive could endanger hostages still alive and draw troops into protracted and deadly guerilla warfare. In Gaza City, many Palestinians have also been calling for protests soon to demand an end to a war that has demolished much of the territory. An Israeli armoured incursion into Gaza City could see the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people, many of whom have been uprooted multiple times earlier in the war. "The people of Gaza City are like someone who received a death sentence and is awaiting execution," said Tamer Burai, a Gaza City businessman. "I am moving my parents and my family to the south today or tomorrow. I can't risk losing any of them should there be a surprising invasion," he said via a chat app. A protest is scheduled for tomorrow in Gaza City by different unions, and people took to social media platforms vowing to participate, for an end to the war. The last round of indirect ceasefire talks ended late last month in deadlock. Israel says it will agree to cease hostilities if all the hostages are released and Hamas lays down its arms — the latter demand publicly rejected by the group until a Palestinian state is established. Last Saturday, the Israeli military said it was preparing to help equip Gazans with tents and other shelter equipment ahead of relocating them from combat zones to the south of the enclave. It did not provide further details on quantities or how long it would take to get the equipment into the enclave. Palestinian economist Mohammad Abu Jayyab said at least 100,000 new tents would be needed to house those heading to central and southern areas of the coastal strip should Israel begin its offensive or the army orders Gaza City's entire population to evacuate. "The existing tents where people are living have worn out, and they wouldn't protect people against rainwater. There are no new tents in Gaza because of the (Israeli) restrictions on aid at the (border) crossings," said Abu Jayyab. He said some families from Gaza City had begun renting property and shelters in the south and moved in their belongings. "Some people learnt from previous experience, and they don't want to be taken by surprise. Also, some think it is better to move earlier to find a space," Abu Jayyab added. The United Nations humanitarian office said last week 1.35 million people were already in need of emergency shelter items in Gaza. Since Oct 7, 2023, more than 61,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's air and ground war in Gaza.

Anwar: Government prioritises fiscal discipline for sustainable economy
KUALA LUMPUR: The country's financial management must be carried out prudently and with discipline, in line with the spirit of the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act 2023 (FRA), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He stressed this while chairing the Fiscal Policy Committee (FPC) meeting, which is an important platform for drafting clear fiscal policies and setting the direction of the country's economy. He said the Madani Government needs to continue to find a balance between efforts to maintain the momentum of economic growth and ensuring the country's fiscal position remains sustainable, especially in the volatile global economic environment. "Although the world is still grappling with uncertainty, the national economy remains strong with a growth rate of 4.4 per cent for the first half of 2025. "The unemployment rate has also dropped to three per cent, the lowest in 10 years," the prime minister said in a post on his Facebook page. He added that the government has successfully reduced the fiscal deficit from 5.5 per cent in 2022 to 4.1 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2024, an achievement that demonstrates its commitment to responsible fiscal management. Meanwhile, in a separate statement following the FPC meeting today, the Finance Ministry said as the Madani Government embarks on the 13th Malaysia Plan, fiscal space must be optimised to deliver public investments that materially transform the economy (Raise the Ceiling) and improve the rakyat's quality of life (Raise the Floor). In 2025, Malaysia's economy is expected to grow between 4.0 per cent and 4.8 per cent, underpinned by strong domestic demand, moderate inflation and a stable labour market. "The FPC meeting today reaffirmed the government's commitment to reducing the 3.8 per cent fiscal deficit target for 2025 and subsequently achieving a deficit of three per cent or below in the medium term, in line with the FRA commitment," said Anwar, who is also the finance minister. The session also serves as an important step in setting the government's fiscal trajectory ahead of the forthcoming Budget 2026, scheduled to be tabled on Oct 10. Under the provisions of the FRA, the ministry said the Madani Government is undertaking the Medium-Term Revenue Strategy (MTRS) to broaden the revenue base and establish a more progressive tax system, while strengthening compliance with international best practices. "Moving forward, priority will be placed on addressing leakages and enhancing efficiency through measures such as the phased implementation of the e-invoicing system. "These efforts underscore the government's resolve to build a fairer, more resilient and sustainable fiscal framework that supports long-term economic growth and the well-being of the people," said the ministry. – BERNAMA
