
Belinda Carlisle: ‘No more rock and roll lifestyle. I get up at 3.30am to chant and do breathwork'
Born and raised in California, Belinda Carlisle, 66, was a founding member of the all-female new wave band The Go-Go's before striking out on her own in the mid-'80s. She achieved a number of hits including Heaven Is a Place on Earth, Leave a Light On and Circle in the Sand, and is heading to the UK to tour in September after the release of her latest album, Once Upon a Time in California. She's also the co-founder and ambassador of Animal People Alliance (APA), a non-profit that provides care to street animals in India and Thailand, and jobs with living wages to vulnerable people to improve their quality of life. She lives in Mexico City with her husband, the film producer Morgan Mason. They have a son.
3.30am
Every day I wake up at about 3.30am. I make myself a coffee, climb back into bed, close my eyes and listen to a spiritual leader like Eckhart Tolle or Ram Dass on Audible. It sounds really pretentious, but it's not. I've been studying these spiritual teachings for a long time. This sounds morbid, but I'm really interested in death and what happens after. A lot of these teachings deal with that, and reincarnation, and provide me with a lot of comfort. It changes your perspective on everything. I'll also do some chanting and breathwork. And transcendental meditation if I have any spare time.
6am
I'm out the door for a big walk around my local park, Bosque de Chapultepec, for an hour or 90 minutes. After that I'll come back and wake up my husband. And then it's time for my Pilates practice. I've been doing Pilates for 30 years. I have my own equipment so I'll just jump on the reformer and do stretching and a lot of whatever I think I need that day. Then I'm ready for the day. Breakfast follows. It's nothing elaborate, usually an egg with a piece of toast.
10am
I try not to spend too long on my emails over the weekend, but if I don't [do any] they pile up, so I try to do a little every day. After that I have an online Spanish lesson for an hour. I take Spanish lessons two or three times a week, and I also practise on Duolingo. I kind of had a head start as I speak French, although now I confuse the two. I love learning Spanish. It's hard but it's really good for your brain, and especially being an older person, it's kind of important. My goal is to be fluent in a couple of years.
11.30am
If it's just my husband and me, we'll go for an early lunch. There are so many restaurants nearby that it's hard to choose where to go. We usually walk unless we visit another neighbourhood like Condesa or Roma; then we'll take an Uber. I've been living in Mexico City for about five years but I don't really eat any Mexican food now, which is funny. I think I just kind of burned myself out on it. I'm vegetarian and there's amazing patisseries and bakeries near us. There's one place we like to go that serves locally grown salads and vegetables. If I'm with my Mexican friends, lunch will be later. After eating we always visit another park close to us that has an aviary. The birds recognise my husband because he always feeds them peanuts. So we'll just wander and sit there for a bit.
3pm
Now it's naptime. I like jumping into bed and watching movies and dozing. I never find any films on Netflix. I'm really out of touch with anything that's super-current. But I love an old post-war Italian film or a Japanese film. Actually, as part of my Spanish lessons I'm also watching a [reality TV] series called Love Is Blind in Spanish with English subtitles. I love it.
5.30pm
We usually stay in on Saturday night. I can count on two hands how many nights I go out a year. I don't even like going out for dinner. I just like staying in and being cosy, and either cooking or ordering food through Uber Eats. If we order in, we'll go for pizza or Indian. Sometimes we'll watch something afterwards. I did go off reading for a while but now I'll read at the end of the day, usually non-fiction like an autobiography or a travel book.
7.30pm
I'm usually asleep at about this time. I try to push it to 8pm, but I'm so tired because I'm up so early. My husband will stay up and watch the big screen in the TV room till about 11pm. My life is very different to how it used to be. I definitely enjoyed the rock and roll lifestyle and I'm happy that I had all these great experiences, but it wasn't sustainable. I'm happier now. I love not having any drama. I love really enjoying the daytime. I'm glad I'm at this point in my life.

Edinburgh Fringe Festival: Welsh language on the global stage
The thousands of people attending the Edinburgh Fringe Festival may well be expecting to see shows in German, French or for one performance duo, it is the Welsh language that takes centre stage as they bring the audience on a journey deep into Celtic Phillips, of the Harebell Tellers, says she is passionate about telling place-based stories that bring the language of the land to the spectators. Creu Cymru, who promote performing arts in Wales, say Welsh language and bilingual shows give global audiences an opportunity to share in the "richness of our heritage". Every year Welsh acts descend on the Scottish capital and join more than 3,500 shows from performers all over the world ranging from comedy to cabaret, to street acts and spoken word. The Harebell Tellers perform folklore and mythological stories through the traditional art of storytelling. Ffion Phillips, from Wales and Ailsa Dixon, from Scotland, weave the Welsh and Scottish languages into their from Conwy, said there are people at the Fringe who have never heard the Welsh language before."It's amazing to take what is really a living, breathing language into venues that don't get a great deal of it," she said."If they are Welsh speakers it's a beautiful point of connection."I love interweaving stories in a way that English speakers in the audience can still hopefully follow what I'm saying - it really brings them into the world of the story."The 20-year-old student has been storytelling since she was eight and started to incorporate the Welsh language soon after."The vast majority of my repertoire is Welsh folklore and myth. As a Welsh speaker in my daily life, I've always loved telling stories bilingually."Their show, Aderyn/Bird, explores bird mythology, dreams and fate. Over three weeks in August the venues and streets in the Edinburgh turn into a hive of arts and culture. Emily Davis is currently performing two shows, Blodwen's in Town and Escape the Rat song, Emily, from Newport, Pembrokeshire, tells her story of moving from west Wales to London and then escaping corporate life all through the eyes of Blodwen. "It's about the culture shocks that happen to you when you come from a small village in west Wales and how you find yourself navigating a new world, leaving behind a support system and finding a new one," she started her theatrical career 10 years ago after completing a cabaret course but found it difficult to perform as herself, so she created an alter ego."Blodwen is me, but without all the self-doubt and emotional baggage," Emily 41-year-old pulls inspiration from her own life and, like Blodwen, works in an office when she's not performing. But the variety is not just in her performances but in the audiences that go to watch."Some days you might get two people at the show, other days 50 people will turn up and others will come because it's raining outside. Every day is different," she said. Stand-up comedian, Stuart Thomas, has been performing at the Edinburgh Fringe for the first time, sharing what life was like growing up on a sheep farm in Port Talbot. "I talk a lot about being Welsh, and about being fat as well, which is why the name of the show is called 'Bad Fatty'. It is all about changing stereotypes."People sometimes hear my accent and don't expect a lot from me, but you can use that in comedy and play with it. It's a fun thing to do to change perceptions."Stuart now lives in Salford but has not forgotten his Welsh roots. "It's great to share a bit about Wales and have Welsh representation at the festival. The Fringe is a global showcase and people come from all over the world," said the 32-year-old. His show talks about body image, sexuality and mental health. Stuart now works as a software engineer designing apps, as well as pursuing a career in got into stand-up after the Covid lockdown and has since gigged in more than 200 locations across the UK. Louise Miles-Payne, Director Creu Cymru said: "The Fringe gives performers a platform for Welsh stories and our language in a unique environment. "It's a chance to test work out, showcase their talent and ensure that the voices of Wales are heard, celebrated, and understood on a global stage."The Edinburgh Fringe Festival runs until 25 August.

Exclusive: ESPN will not air Spike Lee's docuseries on Colin Kaepernick, citing 'creative differences'
BEVERLY HILLS, California, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Director Spike Lee's multi-part documentary series for ESPN Films about former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who sparked a national debate when he protested racial injustice nearly a decade ago, will not be released, the filmmaker and ESPN said. "ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences," ESPN said in a statement to Reuters on Saturday. "Despite not reaching finality, we appreciate all the hard work and collaboration that went into this film." Lee told Reuters on Friday that the series was not going to be released. "It's not coming out. That's all I can say," Lee said on the red carpet ahead of the Harold and Carole Pump Foundation dinner, a fundraiser for cancer research and treatment, in Beverly Hills, California. Asked why, the Oscar-winning director declined to elaborate, citing a nondisclosure agreement. "I can't. I signed a nondisclosure. I can't talk about it." Kaepernick played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2016. He ignited a national debate in 2016 when he knelt during the U.S. national anthem to protest systemic racism and police brutality. The 37-year-old athlete has not played in the NFL since that season. Many experts believed his political activism, which triggered a movement that drew the ire of U.S. President Donald Trump, was the key reason teams were wary of signing him. He later filed a collusion grievance against team owners, which was settled with the league in 2019. A representative for Kaepernick said the player had no comment about the docuseries on Saturday. Production on the series began in 2022, with Walt Disney-owned (DIS.N), opens new tab ESPN touting it as a "full, first-person account" of Kaepernick's journey that would feature extensive interviews with the player. In September, Puck News reported the project faced delays amid disagreements between Kaepernick and Lee over the direction of the film, and that ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro was open to allowing the filmmakers to shop it elsewhere.
