Though the famously humble pontiff requested simplicity in his wooden coffin and final resting place, the funeral Mass still reflected the grandeur and traditions of the Vatican. See photos below of some of the highlights of the day honoring the leader known as "the People's Pope."

Funeral Mass and homily honoring "a pope among the people"
The Mass was led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the 91-year-old dean of the College of Cardinals, who also delivered a highly personal homily.
"He was a pope among the people, with an open heart towards everyone," Re said of Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88. "The guiding thread of his mission was also the conviction that the church is a home for all, a home with its doors always open."

Crowds pay their last respects to Pope Francis
After the funeral Mass, the coffin of Pope Francis was taken in a procession through the streets of Rome to his final resting place, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (St. Mary Major). In his last will and testament, Francis asked to be buried in that fifth-century church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, where he went to pray before and after his foreign travels as pontiff.

Hunter Biden-Jasmine Crockett presidential campaign 'would be some ticket,' Trump jokes
WASHINGTON — President Trump found the idea of a Hunter Biden-Jasmine Crocket 2028 Democratic presidential ticket both amusing and terrifying on the latest episode of 'Pod Force One,' out now. 'That would be some ticket. No, these people are crazy, so you never know what's going to happen,' Trump quipped after The Post's Miranda Devine joked that Hunter and Crockett (D-Texas) could be a 'joint ticket.' The jest came after Trump weighed in on Hunter's decision to come out forcefully in defense of his father, former President Joe Biden, in a pair of interviews last week. Every week, Post columnist Miranda Devine sits down for exclusive and candid conversations with the most influential disruptors in Washington. Subscribe here! The former first son blamed Democrats' 2024 electoral loss on the party ditching his father and blamed former elder Biden's disastrous June 27, 2024, debate performance against Trump on his use of Ambien — apparently without a prescription. 'Well, they had two chances to win the election,' Trump told Devine. 'They had him, and that didn't work out, and he was down by 25 points or something, and then they switched him. It's like taking a prize fighter out in the middle of the fight. It's not fair. 'They took him out, they put Kamala [in]. Nobody knew who Kamala was,' he added. 'I guess they say she's going to try it again [in 2028], and I don't see it.' 'But how about Crockett? Crockett is their new star.' 4 President Trump chided that it's not inconceivable that Democrats may turn to Rep. Jasmine Crockett and Hunter Biden in 2028. Daniel Torok / The White House 4 Hunter Biden blamed Democrats' 2024 electoral loss on the party ditching his father. Middle East Images/AFP via Getty Images 4 Rep. Jasmine Crockett has defended former President Joe Biden. Houston Chronicle via Getty Images Trump then bashed the outspoken Texas congresswoman as 'a low-IQ person,' prompting Devine to joke about a team-up of the two Democrats in 2028. Crockett, 44, has passionately defended the 46th president, insisting that his mental acuity 'is supreme when it comes to comparing him to Donald Trump.' 'I never saw anything in Joe Biden that made me wonder whatsoever, and it's not that I was with Joe Biden every single day, that's for sure,' Crockett told Katie Couric's 'Next Question' podcast in an interview last month. 'The way that I would describe Joe is like, I mean, he's a granddaddy, right?' Crockett was recently the subject of an Atlantic profile piece that revealed she uses a photo of herself as the lockscreen wallpaper on her phone. Meanwhile, Hunter's recent interviews caught the eye of podcast titan Joe Rogan, who mused that the former first son 'could be president' one day as he came across as 'smarter than his dad.' 4 President Trump also riffed about becoming the First Minister of Scotland. Daniel Torok / The White House After riffing about Hunter and Crockett, Devine noted that she had been requested to ask Trump about becoming First Minister of Scotland when his term concludes. Trump, whose mother Mary Anne MacLeod was born on the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides, suggested 'I could do that' in response. 'I would think I might be eligible,' the 79-year-old added. 'I could be, within six months or something like that. But it is a special place.'

India forces kill three gunmen involved in Indian Kashmir tourist terror attack
Indian operatives killed three of the gunmen involved in an April attack on Hindu tourists. Two of the three were identified as members of Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba. India denied it bowed to US pressure to agree to a truce with Pakistan. Indian security forces have killed three gunmen who were involved in an attack on Hindu tourists in Indian Kashmir, home minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday. The heavily-armed men were killed in a military operation on Monday, more than three months after 26 people were gunned down in a popular resort town of Indian Kashmir on 22 April. 'I want to tell the parliament (that) those who attacked in Baisaran were three terrorists and all three have been killed,' he said. Shah identified two of the three killed as members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, a UN-designated terrorist group based in Pakistan. 'Indian security agencies have detailed evidence of their involvement in the attack,' he said in a speech in the lower house of parliament. Monday's operation took place in the mountains of Dachigam, around 30km from the disputed region's main city of Srinagar, the army said in a statement. The attack in April saw gunmen burst out of forests near Pahalgam and rake crowds of visitors with automatic weapons. All those killed were listed as residents of India except one man from Nepal. India accused Pakistan of backing the attackers, a charge Islamabad denied, sparking an intense four-day conflict between the nuclear-armed rivals that killed more than 70 people on both sides. Muslim-majority Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since their independence from British rule in 1947, and the neighbours - who both claim the region in full - have fought two wars and several conflicts over its control. Reuters reported India's defence minister said on Monday that New Delhi had ended its military conflict with Pakistan in May as it had met all its objectives and had not responded to pressure, rejecting US President Donald Trump's claim that he brokered the truce. Tauseef Mustafa/AFP Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was speaking at the opening of a discussion in parliament on the 22 April attack on Hindu tourists in Indian Kashmir in which 26 men were killed. The attack led to a fierce, four-day military conflict with Pakistan in May, the worst between the nuclear-armed neighbours in nearly three decades. 'India halted its operation because all the political and military objectives studied before and during the conflict had been fully achieved,' Singh said. 'To suggest that the operation was called off under pressure is baseless and entirely incorrect,' he said.

Josh Hawley bill would give millions of Americans $600 each from tariff revenue
Sen. Josh Hawley rolled out a new bill late Monday to give $600 in tariff rebates to millions of American workers and families, days after President Trump floated the idea. 'Americans deserve a tax rebate after four years of Biden policies that have devastated families' savings and livelihoods,' Hawley (R-Mo.) said in a statement. 'Like President Trump proposed, my legislation would allow hard-working Americans to benefit from the wealth that Trump's tariffs are returning to this country.' The Republican's American Worker Rebate Act would provide at least $600 to each adult and dependent child, with higher payments possible if tariff revenue exceeds projections for the year. Married couples who file taxes jointly and make more than $150,000 per year combined, heads of households who make more than $112,500 per year and individuals earning more than $75,000 per year will see their rebates reduced by 5%. Tariff revenue has topped $113 billion so far in fiscal year 2025, and the US posted a budget surplus for June as tariff revenue soared to $27 billion. 3 The Missouri Republican said he would introduce the tariff rebate bill after President Trump expressed interest in the idea. Getty Images 3 President Trump unveiled a suite of tariffs earlier this year as part of his effort to overhaul US trade policy. AFP via Getty Images Both Trump himself and administration officials like Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick have claimed tariff revenue can be used to quickly pay down the federal deficit, which clocked in at $1.8 trillion last fiscal year. However, the president suggested to reporters as he left the White House for Scotland Friday that his team was 'thinking about a little rebate.' 'The big thing we want to do is pay down debt,' Trump said at the time. 'But we're thinking about a rebate.' Hawley's bill would dish out money under similar parameters to COVID-19 relief Congress passed beginning in 2020. 3 Sen. Josh Hawley has long branded himself as a populist-style Republican. Getty Images The first payments, of $1,200 to individuals making up to $75,000 and $2,400 to couples making up to $150,000, were issued in March 2020. A second round of payments, of $600 to individuals and $1,200 to couples under those thresholds, was doled out in December 2020. The third and final payment, of up to $1,400 to individuals and $2,800 to couples, was approved as part of the Biden-era American Rescue Plan in March 2021. Most conservatives have insisted that the administration focus on reducing the deficit and have warned about the inflationary effect of handing out more spending money while trying to keep prices down. 'While it's always politically advantageous to hand out money to constituents, the fact is the federal government has no money to give at this point,' Heritage Foundation chief economist EJ Antoni told The Post Friday in response to Trump's initial rebate float. 'When the annual deficit is over $1 trillion, the priority has to be getting that down, not giving the Treasury another outlay.'
