Photos: Thai-Cambodian border conflict escalates with deadly clashes
Deadly clashes erupted along the Thai-Cambodian border, killing at least 11 civilians and one soldier, all on the Thailand side, as a diplomatic crisis deepens between the Southeast Asian neighbours.
Violence intensified on Thursday when both nations exchanged gunfire, with accusations of who initiated the conflict. Diplomatic ties have severely deteriorated since Wednesday, leading Thailand to seal all land border crossings with Cambodia.
The situation has been worsening since a May confrontation that killed one Cambodian soldier, with nationalist sentiments inflaming tensions on both sides.
Thai military sources reported the heaviest casualties in Si Sa Ket province, where six people died during an attack on a petrol station. At least 14 others sustained injuries across three border provinces.
The conflict escalated as Thai forces launched air attacks against Cambodian military positions, while Cambodia reported Thai jets bombing a road near the historic Preah Vihear temple.
Thai Ministry of Defence spokesperson Surasant Kongsiri confirmed ongoing fighting in at least six border areas. Thursday's initial clash occurred near the ancient Ta Muen Thom Temple on the border between Thailand's Surin province and Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey province.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet declared that while his nation has consistently pursued peaceful solutions, 'we have no choice but to respond with armed force against armed aggression'.
Earlier on Thursday, Cambodia downgraded diplomatic relations with Thailand to their lowest level, expelling the Thai ambassador and recalling all Cambodian embassy staff from Bangkok. This action followed Thailand's withdrawal of its ambassador and expulsion of the Cambodian ambassador on Wednesday in protest of a landmine explosion that injured five Thai soldiers.
Regarding Thursday's initial confrontation, the Thai army reported that it detected an unmanned aerial vehicle before spotting six armed Cambodian soldiers approaching Thailand's position. Despite Thai soldiers' verbal attempts to defuse the situation, the Cambodian forces allegedly opened fire first.

Thailand accuses Cambodia of ceasefire violations but truce still holding
Thailand's army has accused Cambodia of violating an hours-old truce, saying that sporadic clashes continued despite an agreement to end the deadly fighting in the disputed border region between the two Southeast Asian countries. Thai troops have retaliated 'appropriately' and in 'self-defence', Thailand's army spokesman, Winthai Suvaree, said in a statement on Tuesday. 'At the time the agreement took effect, the Thai side detected that Cambodian forces had launched armed attacks into several areas within Thai territory,' Winthai said. 'This constitutes a deliberate violation of the agreement and a clear attempt to undermine mutual trust,' he added. 'Thailand is compelled to respond appropriately, exercising its legitimate right to self-defence.' Following peace talks in Malaysia, both Cambodia and Thailand agreed that an unconditional ceasefire would start at midnight on Monday to end the fighting in disputed zones along their 800km (500-mile) border, which killed at least 38 people in five days of clashes and displaced nearly 300,000 more. Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai played down the reported ceasefire violations, and said he had spoken with Cambodia's defence minister ahead of scheduled talks between military commanders from both countries on Tuesday morning. 'There is no escalation,' Phumtham told reporters. 'Right now, things are calm,' he said. Maly Socheata, a spokesperson for the Cambodian Ministry of National Defence, said in a briefing that there had been no fighting along the border since the agreement in Malaysia. The truce deal was set to see military commanders from both sides meet at 7am local time (00:00 GMT) on Tuesday, before a cross-border committee is convened in Cambodia to further ease tensions on August 4 . A Thai army spokesman said those talks were rescheduled for 10am local time (03:00 GMT), but then later told the Reuters news agency that the meeting had been postponed with no new time set. Al Jazeera's Tony Cheng, reporting from Surin province in Thailand, said the Thai military reported 'a couple of clashes in several areas along the border'. 'They did issue a statement saying that the Cambodian military was not respecting the ceasefire agreement. But for the most part, it does seem to be holding,' Cheng said. In Cambodia's Samraong city, 20km (12.4 miles) from the border with Thailand, an AFP journalist said the sound of blasts stopped in the 30 minutes leading up to midnight on Monday, with the lull continuing until dawn. 'The front line has eased since the ceasefire at 12 midnight,' Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said in a Tuesday morning message on Facebook. Al Jazeera's Barnaby Lo, reporting from the Oddar Meanchey province in Cambodia, said local people reported not hearing 'any exchange of fire overnight and this morning'. A joint statement from both countries on Monday – as well as Malaysia, which hosted the peace talks – said the ceasefire was 'a vital first step towards de-escalation and the restoration of peace and security'. The flare-up in cross-border fighting has been the deadliest since violence raged sporadically from 2008 to 2011 over disputed border territory.

Five dead in NYC shooting, including gunman: Reports
At least four people, including a New York City police officer, have been killed in a shooting inside a Midtown Manhattan office tower that houses major financial institutions and the headquarters of the National Football League, US media reports. The shooting took place at about 6pm local time (22:00 GMT) on Monday at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, with police arriving at the scene within minutes, according to local media reports. The suspected shooter, tentatively identified as a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, was also found dead at the scene, CNN reported. The US network said authorities believe he died from a self-inflicted injury, citing multiple law enforcement sources. The New York Post, citing unnamed police sources, reported that the gunman was wearing a bullet-resistant vest and was armed with an AR-style rifle when he opened fire inside the skyscraper. He had reportedly barricaded himself inside the building, possibly on the 32nd floor. CNN said police shared a photo of the suspect walking into the building carrying the rifle. Preliminary checks of the suspect's background did not show a significant criminal history, the report added, citing officials. New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the situation has been 'contained' and that the 'lone shooter has been neutralised'. New York Mayor Eric Adams said in a video message on X that there were 'multiple injuries' in the shooting. The skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue is home to several major firms, including Blackstone – the world's largest hedge fund – KPMG, Deutsche Bank and the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL). Three killed in Reno casino shooting Separately, earlier on Monday, an attacker armed with a pistol opened fire outside a casino in Reno, Nevada, killing three people and critically wounding two others, before being shot and seriously injured by police, authorities said. The shooting occurred just before 7:30am local time (00:30 GMT) at the valet station in the car park of the Grand Sierra Resort, a high-rise casino and hotel complex in Nevada's third-largest city, according to police. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was described only as an adult male. Police believe the victims were targeted at random.
