Adiba Anam secure AIR 142 in UPSC Exam 2024 and became the first Muslim woman from Maharashtra to crack the civil services exam.
With her fourth attempt, Adiba Anam, the daughter of an autorickshaw driver from Maharashtra's Yavatmal district, has created history—becoming the first Muslim woman from the state to clear the UPSC Civil Services Exam. Ranked 142nd in the All India list for 2024, her journey from a modest background to the country's top bureaucracy is a powerful reminder that determination can break any barrier.
Adiba's roots lie in a family that struggled financially but never compromised on the value of education. Her father, Ashfaq Ahmed, couldn't pursue studies and turned to driving an autorickshaw to support the family. Still, the belief in education ran deep in their household.
Adiba began her academic journey at Zafarnagar Zilla Parishad Urdu Primary School and completed her schooling through local government institutions in Yavatmal. Later, she pursued a BSc in Mathematics from Inamdar Senior College in Pune, where she also began her civil services preparation.
Success After Setbacks
Adiba's UPSC journey wasn't without setbacks. She faced three initial failures, reaching the interview round once but falling short of the final selection. Yet, she didn't lose heart. With a focused mindset, she prepared harder for her fourth attempt—and this time, it paid off.
Her success was also shaped by guidance from Haj House IAS Training Institute and Jamia Residential Coaching Academy, where she honed her preparation and strategy.
As congratulations poured in, former Maharashtra Minister Manikrao Thakre, also from Yavatmal, praised her on social media, calling her selection a proud moment for the district and the state.
Adiba's story is one of grit, persistence, and belief—proof that no dream is too distant when backed by relentless effort and the right support.

In kabrastan headway, MMC to swap land with Raia comunidade

Margao: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Wednesday unanimously agreed to sign a deed of exchange for land with Raia comunidade, which is required for an access road to the proposed kabrastan site at Sonsoddo. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The latest development came after a fresh survey report revealed encroachments on the access road to the site. The MMC previously acquired 30,000sqm of land from the comunidade for the burial ground project, but the survey findings highlighted complications with the access route. When the matter was presented before the high court, where proceedings related to the kabrastan issue are under way, negotiations for a settlement between the parties began. In response to the encroachment findings, Raia comunidade offered alternative land for the access road. However, the initial offer included only easementary rights to the alternative land, rather than the full ownership title. Easementary rights legally allow one property's owner or occupier to use another property for a specific purpose. Following legal advice, the MMC lawyer recommended that since easementary rights do not confer ownership rights to the MMC, a deed of exchange be executed between the council and the comunidade of Raia. The Sonsoddo kabrastan issue has been a contentious matter for over a decade. The land at Sonsoddo was originally acquired by the MMC as a burial ground for all three communities through a 2010 resolution. Subsequently, the MMC decided that at least 1,000sqm of the 30,000sqm at Sonsoddo would be reserved as a burial ground for persons of different faiths. Meanwhile, Abdulmatin Daud Carol, who represents the Muslim community on the kabrastan issue, met South Goa collector Egna Cleetus on Wednesday to express his disappointment over the delay in resolving the matter. The collector is learnt to have assured Carol that she would study the consultant's report and take appropriate action. Carol also highlighted the urgency of the situation, expressing concerns that further delays could create tensions given the acute shortage of burial space. He said there is no space left in the existing kabrastan in Margao.

Govt. open to discussion on new school timings after concerns raised

The government on Wednesday said it was open to discussions if any group faced difficulties following the announcement of new school timings for high schools in the State. The move comes after Muslim scholar and president of the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama Jifri Muthukoya Thangal expressed concern that the revised schedule would affect madrassa education for around 12 lakh students. Mr. Thangal raised the issue at a function attended by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The Samastha Kerala Jamiyyatthul ul-Ulama, known as Samastha, is an association of Sunni scholars who enjoy the highest support base among Kerala Muslims. General Education Minister V. Sivankutty, responding to the concerns, said the government was ready to listen and consider changes if needed. The revised timings, announced earlier in the day, extend the school day by 15 minutes in both the morning and evening sessions, except on Fridays. Under the new schedule, high school classes will run from 9.15 a.m. to 4.15 p.m. Talking to a news channel, Mr. Sivankutty said the government was under no compulsion on this matter. He said this was not framed by the Education department on the basis of a government decision, but followed a court directive and a commission's decision. 'Still, if any section faces difficulties due to the new timings, the government will hold discussions with them and put in place a system that does not cause difficulties to anyone,' Mr. Sivankutty said.

MMK rally, conference to stress adequate political representation for minorities

Papanasam MLA and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi president M.H. Jawahirullah on Wednesday said that the party is organising a rally followed by a conference in Madurai on July 6 emphasising the need for adequate political representation for the minorities and to repeal the Waqf Amendment Act. Addressing mediapersons in Madurai during a party meeting, he said as of June 2025, out of the 776 seats of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, only 39 of them were Muslims, 24 in Lok Sabha and 15 in Rajya Sabha which is 4.42% in Lok Sabha and 6.4% in Rajya Sabha, he said, adding there was no adequate political representation for Muslims. In the State Assemblies it was the same. There were a total of 4,123 MLAs across India. Out of this only 296 were Muslims. This was 7.18 %. Even in those States which had a sizable population of Muslims, there was no adequate representation, he said. In Tamil Nadu Assembly there were a total of 234 seats. However, there were only 7 Muslim MLAs. Even in local bodies, the number of Muslim representatives had reduced, he said. There were only 4 Muslim ward councillors in Greater Chennai Corporation, he said, adding the situation was similar in Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Madurai and Tirunelveli Corporations.. He said the political parties were not giving priority to the minorities which they should. He said the Waqf Amendment Act should be repealed. Section 40 of the Waqf Act authorises the Waqf Board to decide whether a property was Waqf property. However, the amendment to the Act took away this right. Waqf Board CEO should be a Muslim. Even this was removed by the amendment, he said. MMK has planned to conduct a rally and a conference in Madurai stressing the need for adequate political representation for the minorities and to repeal the Waqf Amendment Act. Thousands of people are expected to participate and voice their support, he said. Answering queries on the alliance with DMK, Mr. Jawahirullah said they were in a political alliance that opposed fascism and DMK alliance opposed BJP's ideology. To a query on Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticising DMK government for not fulfilling its poll promises, Mr. Jawahirullah said Mr. Shah had no right to criticise DMK government and the government was implementing various welfare schemes for the benefit of the people. To a query on TVK, he said BJP was operating TVK Chief Vijay.
