Chilean Fernandez leaving Red Giants

KUALA LUMPUR: Chilean Ronnie Fernandez is leaving Selangor after just one season. But he won't be going home empty-handed — there's a winner medal in his luggage.
The striker helped Selangor win the MFL Challenge Cup — their first silverware in 10 years,
Fernandez posted on Instagram yesterday: "Thank you Selangor for allowing me to be part of your story. Good luck."
The 34-year-old joined the Red Giants in January from Bolivian club, Bolivar, and quickly established himself as a key player.
He made 33 appearances in all competitions for Selangor, including the Asian Champions League 2, scoring 12 goals and providing three assists.
Fernandez joined a growing list of notable names leaving Selangor, including captain Safuwan Baharudin, Yohandry Orozco, Nikola Jambor and Ali Olwan.

Selangor FC were not scammed, just unlucky, says club official

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor FC's underperforming imports during the 2024-25 M-League season have triggered accusations from fans that the club had fallen victim to scammers. However, technical committee chairman Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar has dismissed the claims, insisting the Red Giants were simply "unlucky". "We didn't get scammed, but we were unlucky. Other clubs have gone through the same thing. The players had good profiles, but when they came here, they failed to live up to expectations," he said. "We are now targeting younger foreign signings for the new season." Looking ahead to the 2025-26 campaign, Selangor are planning a major squad overhaul, having released a long list of local and foreign players, along with several members of the coaching staff, following the end of the league last month. Confirmed departures include Ronnie Fernandez, Ali Olwan, captain Safuwan Baharudin, Khairulazhan Khalid and Khuzaimie Piee. "We believe these players can't take Selangor any further. "We failed to win any major cups or make an impact in the Asian Champions League 2 (ACL2) last season. "It's time for a big change, especially with the foreigners. We need to find better imports," said Shahril. "We're looking for new foreign players, but we won't be filling the full quota of 15. That's for sure, as we need to assess our financial capabilities." Shahril admitted the upcoming season will be a monumental challenge. Besides the Super League, FA Cup and Malaysia Cup, the Red Giants will also play in the ACL2 and the Asean Club Championship (ACC). Despite a congested fixture list, Selangor will not be appealing to the Malaysian Football League (MFL) for additional player registrations, with the current cap set at 34. "The number of players remains unchanged, so we just have to find better-quality players," he said. "This time, we're hoping luck is on our side. "Last season, we were unfortunate with so many injuries. I hope we can overcome that moving forward," Shahril added. Selangor finished runners-up in both the Super League and FA Cup, losing out to Johor Darul Ta'zim on both occasions last season. They crashed out in the Malaysia Cup round of 16 and failed to progress beyond the ACL2 group stage.

Soccer-Qatar-backed PSG's united approach puts them on brink of European glory

PARIS (Reuters) - Paris St Germain are on the brink of a maiden Champions League title, chasing European glory in their first campaign since the departure of France striker Kylian Mbappe, but street-wise Inter Milan stand between them and history in Saturday's final. Luis Enrique's Ligue 1 champions, backed by owners Qatar Sports Investments, have been impressive in Europe with a cohesive brand of football that marks a clear departure from the star-driven, sometimes disjointed squads of PSG's recent past. The focus on unity, tactical discipline and collective effort has drawn widespread plaudits ahead of their showdown with Inter, who eliminated Barcelona after a thrilling semi-final, in European club soccer's biggest match of the season. "They (PSG) buy into their coach's game plan, you can see it, and it shows in everyone's activity," former PSG coach Luis Fernandez, who led the club to their only European title in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1996, told Reuters. "No-one's playing the star, even though they're all stars, and I admire that." Since Qatar Sports Investments took control of the club in 2011, big-spending PSG have dominated domestic football but have fallen short in Europe, with their only previous Champions League final ending in defeat by Bayern Munich in 2020. Fernandez believes this year's squad represents a refreshing shift in approach. 'This is the best collective we've seen at PSG since the Qatari era began -- the one I like the most, and the one I keep praising,' he said. Fernandez highlighted the camaraderie and mutual trust forged within the group after a decade dominated by marquee signings and high-profile exits. "This team has the special quality of genuinely liking each other, appreciating one another — they're a group of friends," he said. "They position themselves intelligently, make the effort together and no-one resists what the coach asks of them." KEEPERS' FINAL Luis Enrique, who took charge last year, said his team had long targeted this moment, which comes after they won the domestic double of Ligue 1 and the French Cup. "We've been thinking about this final for a very long time because it's the objective we all share -- and we want to make history with our supporters," the Spaniard said. "We've been preparing for 11 months. There's nothing special to adjust because the team is used to playing this way. It's about managing the pressure and excitement of such a special moment." Inter, battle-hardened and tactically astute under Simone Inzaghi, will likely test PSG's resolve, particularly at set pieces — one of the few areas where Fernandez sees vulnerability in the French champions. "On set pieces, where PSG show a slight weakness, they'll need to be very careful. In open play, PSG are certainly the better side,' he said. PSG enter the final with no injury concerns, while Inter fullback Benjamin Pavard and striker Lautaro Martinez are expected to be fit for the Serie A runners-up. "My wish is to have everyone available on Saturday evening," Inzaghi said. "We're going to approach the final in the best possible way." Inter won the Champions League in 2010, after also lifting the European Cup in 1964 and 1965, while Olympique de Marseille are the only French club to have won the trophy, back in 1993. While this year's finalists have displayed attacking brilliance, the match could be decided by the goalkeepers - PSG's Gianluigi Donnarumma and Inter's Yann Sommer. "If you look at the Champions League winners over the last 10 or 15 years, practically, it's always the teams with strong goalkeepers who win," former Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "And if we look at the season, Donnarumma and Sommer have been the top goalkeepers in Europe. Maybe Gigio (Donnarumma) was the absolute best, but Sommer showed an impressive consistency in maintaining his very high level of performance. It will also be a final of goalkeepers." Man Utd flop Antony wanted 'revenge' at Betis, says Pellegrini

REAL BETIS coach Manuel Pellegrini said Brazil winger Antony wanted 'revenge' when he arrived in Spain after flopping at Manchester United as their team prepared for Wednesday's UEFA Conference League final against Chelsea. Antony joined the Liga side on loan in January and has roared back to form, scoring nine times and providing five assists in 25 games. The 25-year-old became the second-most expensive player in United's history when he joined from Ajax in 2022 for £81.3 million ($110 million), but he failed to live up to his price tag. The winger scored just once for United this season before his Spain switch. Antony told TNT Sports Brazil ahead of the Conference League showdown in Wroclaw that at one stage he was so miserable he went 'days without eating'. 'I told (my brother) that I couldn't take it any more,' he said. Betis boss Pellegrini told his pre-match press conference in Poland on Tuesday that he was proud of his role in Antony's revival but praised the forward, who has scored some spectacular goals in Spain. 'I think that Anthony did all that he could to do,' he said. 'I spoke with him before he came to Betis. He told me that he was not playing because he was not happy. 'Also, he wanted revenge. Here in Betis, I think that he did it in the way we know that he can.' Former Real Madrid and Manchester City boss Pellegrini said it was not easy to play with the pressure of such a huge price tag. 'Antony is a very good player. I am absolutely sure that this is a huge time he had in Betis to continue improving his career.' Two-time European champions Chelsea have been been favourites to win the continent's third-tier club competition since the start of the season. But Pellegrini, 71, backed his team, who finished sixth in La Liga and are playing in their first European final. 'We don't believe it is David and Goliath,' he said. 'I think tomorrow we will have exactly the same opportunity to win the match.' The Chilean admitted that early in the competition he had predicted he would meet Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, his former assistant at West Ham, in the final. 'I sent a very short message when we started in the group stage, telling him that I saw us in Poland in the final, and when we both arrived, I also sent a message to tell him how happy I was to play the final against him,' he said.
