KYOTO — An exquisite, uniquely woven reproduction of the famous pair of 17th-century byobu screen paintings 'Wind God and Thunder God Screens' by Tawaraya Sotatsu, has been dedicated to Kenninji temple in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto.
The original paintings, designated national treasures, are owned by the temple.
The reproduction consists of two tapestries, one depicting the Wind God and the other showing the Thunder God. It is displayed as a pair of hanging scrolls, each measuring about 1.9 meters long and wide.
The reproduction was made and dedicated to the temple in March by the Nishijin Textile Industry Association in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto.
The tapestries were woven with Japanese silk thread, which is difficult to obtain today, and thread made from pure gold.
They were made with a unique Nishijin weaving method that requires meticulous, highly skilled craftsmanship. This method creates complex patterns which can only be woven at a rate of one square centimeter per day.
Four master weavers, including Kikuo Hirano, 85, took seven years to complete this full-size reproduction of the original paintings, which was finished in 2015.
The tapestries were dedicated in time for the Osaka-Kansai Expo.
The dedication ceremony was held in the room of the temple's head priest, where the reproduction was hung.
The president of the textile association said, 'Seeing it here, it looks wonderful, as if it's finally found its right place.'
Hirano, who has been in the field for more than 70 years and was responsible for weaving the Wind God, said: 'When I examined the original paintings, I thought the key point was how they depict the clouds. I was able to make mine so that it looks like they're really floating in the air [as in the original paintings].
Kenninji chief priest Taigan Kobori said that the temple would treasure the reproductions.

SHANGHAI (Kyodo) -- At a club in Shanghai, dozens of young people are jumping and waving glow sticks as they dance to the music, leaning in as if to touch the performers on stage. They're Chinese amateur girl groups singing in Japanese, and this is Japan's globalized idol culture. About 20 Chinese idol groups wearing colorful frilly dresses and Lolita-style outfits performed at a recent weekend music event. The emcees sometimes called out to the crowd in Japanese, with shouts of "se-no" ("All together now!") or "arigato-gozaimashita" ("Thank you very much!"). After the show, fans lined up to chat with the idols at the venue's booths. These meet-and-greet sessions are called "perks meetings." The paid service lets fans take pictures with the idols, get autographs, and chat with the girls for a few minutes. An autographed photo and a two-minute chat costs 100 yuan ($14). According to Chinese media, the number of underground idol groups in the country has skyrocketed since the end of pandemic restrictions, from about 40 in 2023 to over 250 in March this year. A male fan of the idol group "Affloret" gave his favorite group member, Rhythm, a flower bouquet for her birthday. "I really love her and have been watching her grow. I hope she becomes the No. 1 idol in China," said the man, who wore a black vest with the Chinese message: "I only watch Rhythm." The producers of Affloret, which was set up in China's biggest business hub in June last year, include people who worked at AKB48 Team SH, the Shanghai branch of Japan's famous all-girl idol group AKB48. Since AKB48 started in 2005, it has operated under the concept of "idols that fans can casually meet" through "handshake" meet-and-greet paid events at venues including a Tokyo theater dedicated to the group. Of the six women in Affloret, only Nayuyu is a full-time idol. The others are either college students or work part-time in the entertainment industry aside from their main jobs. Rhythm said in an interview that she feels "very happy and blessed" on stage and that it is great to be able to share her emotions with fans who often reciprocate with a feeling "full of energy" after watching her performances. The group members, who were chosen from about 100 candidates, sing in both Japanese and Chinese, even though Nayuyu says Japanese pronunciation is hard since most of the members have not really studied the language. Being passionate and enthusiastic about becoming an idol is more important than talent, an Affloret producer said. Even though Affloret has over 100,000 fans who follow their online content and social media, the group's main source of revenue is offline -- event tickets and meet-ups. The Affloret members said they look up to Japanese underground idol groups like AIBECK and iLIFE as role models and hope to perform with them in Japan. A Japanese man in his 40s who lives in Shanghai and follows Chinese idols said he thinks the biggest difference between Japanese and Chinese entertainment cultures is the physical distance between the fans and performers. "In Japan, there are strict rules and fans must keep a certain distance from idols, but here the atmosphere is more relaxed, allowing fans to chat with the performers more intimately," he said. Unlike a lot of Japanese groups that are made up of teenagers, most of the Chinese idols are adults who get into show business for a limited time, according to the Japanese fan. A lot of members "graduate" or quit after a year or so, presumably because Chinese youth are under more pressure to find stable jobs. The man said he got into Chinese underground idols after seeing a live performance by a group called Transparent Classroom and Parallel Girls from Changsha, Hunan Province, in 2019. The six members of the Changsha idol group are unique. They sing original songs in various genres, including rock and punk, in Chinese. This is different from the groups classified as mainstream idols, which try to evoke feelings of "moe," or enchantment with cute and innocent characters. Zhao Beichen, 31, the producer of Transparent Classroom, is known in the Chinese media as the "godmother of Chinese underground idols." After a live performance in Changsha in May, she explained that she wants to nurture "alternative" performers who are "not perfect" and can be seen as "unsophisticated." Zhao researched Japanese underground idols for her thesis at Meiji University in Tokyo, attended concerts by amateur groups and worked at an idol talent agency while she was in Japan. "China's got a huge population base, so no matter how niche the genre is, there'll always be a market as long as there are people who like it," Zhao said. "I think it'll be easier to get underground idol groups together in China than in Japan because the culture here isn't as developed." Zhao said she has never thought about having her group sing Japanese songs because the members cannot speak the language. "Underground idols should be diverse and inclusive, like a hodgepodge," she said, adding that the industry is "fun because it is based on grassroots."

Chilling terror mixes with warm nostalgia as the Hiesan Haunted House rises from its figurative grave. For decades, every summer ghosts, ghouls, and other terrifying creatures would appear in Kyoto's Sakyo Ward. Once fall came and the weather cooled off the monsters would disappear, but only until the next summer rolled around. This pattern continued until 2000. That summer, for the first time since they'd first shown up, the ghosts did not reappear and rampage. However, this wasn't because of the efforts of onmyoji exorcists or proton pack-lugging Ghostbusters. Instead, the lack of supernatural activity came about because in early 2000, the Hiesancho Amusement Park, which had been in business since 1959, closed down, which also meant the end of its seasonal summer haunted house. But as anyone who's ever seen a horror movie knows, though it may seem like dark forces have been dispelled, oftentimes they're really just lying in wait, silently and sinisterly gathering power until, right when you think they're gone for good, they suddenly resurface. That's just what's happened with the Hiesancho Amusement Park haunted house, which has now returned even though its original home is gone. Like many department stores, the Kyoto branch of Daimaru includes event areas, used to host things like limited-time art exhibitions, clearance sales, and regional food fairs. Since the end of July, though, the Kyoto Daimaru's sixth-floor event hall has become haunted, as it's the venue for the Reiwa Return of the Hiesan Haunted House (Reiwa being the name of the current Japanese imperial calendar era, which began in 2019, long after the amusement park closed). This isn't a case of simply digging up the name of a previously popular attraction for some easy publicity, either, as the Reiwa Hiesan Haunted House was designed with the help of people who had first-hand experience with the original, and includes recreations of some of the pre-Reiwa iterations' scares visitors must brave in its graveyards and ruins. The department store haunted house is proving to be a big hit, with more than 10,000 people having made it out alive as of last Thursday. Daimaru says it's especially popular with couples on dates and families with kids, with some groups even consisting of stout-hearted grandparents and grandkids, making for an experience both spooky and nostalgic. ▼ The promotional signage has a retro aesthetic too, harkening back to the haunted house's original gory glory days. Prices start at 500 yen (US$3.40) for elementary school-age kids, with tickets for middle schooler 1,200 yen and adults 1,500 yen, with a slight discount for paired two-adult admission at 2,800 yen. Children younger than elementary school age are admitted free of charge, but must be accompanied by a paying parent or guardian 18 years of age or older, either for safety reasons, economic purposes, or perhaps moral considerations regarding the potential psychological damage of sending a bunch of preschoolers into a haunted house to fend for themselves. The Reiwa Return of the Hiesan Haunted House is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with last entry at 6 o'clock, through August 31 (though last entry will be at 3 p.m. on the final day). The organizers say mornings and evenings are comparatively less crowded, though whether an increased feeling of isolation as you're being menaced by the ghosts inside is a plus or not is up to you. Much like kawaii or isekai, gacha is one of those words that's become largely understood by fans of Japanese culture even if they don't speak Japanese. That's a handy linguistic development, because even if there are still a lot of times where 'capsule toy' works as a description, sometimes what the randomized capsule drop is awarding you is something other than a toy to play with. For example, this month sake gacha machines are going to be installed in Tokyo. Set to open inside the Tobu Department Store next to downtown Tokyo's Ikebukuro Station is the Kurand Sake Gacha Popup Store, operated by online sake and spirits marketplace Kurand. If you're thinking that the small size of a gacha capsule means you're getting shortchanged on the quantity of your beverage, you can put your mind at ease. Instead of being filled with booze themselves, each capsule contains a voucher which you can then redeem on-site for the corresponding alcoholic beverage. The random nature notwithstanding, this isn't an 'anything is fine as long as it gets you drunk' kind of promotion, either. The shop will have five different categories of alcoholic drinks, starting with one specifically for sake, one for fruit liquors and sweet-tasting alcoholic beverages, and one 'omakase' style with a variety of spirits in its lineup. There's also a mini-size sake gacha machine for smaller 300-milliliter (10.-1 ounce) bottles, and finally, there's the premium gacha, with such ultra luxurious possible prizes as Shinkyo, a rare 50-year-aged shochu that usually retails for 110,000 yen (US$743) a bottle and the 30-year-old sake Tenko, which at 55,000 yen a bottle is also very much a special-occasion drink. Prices to play the gacha machine range from 1,000 yen for the mini bottle gacha to 5,000 yen for the premium, with the remaining three being 2,500 yen. Since that's a whole lot of 100-yen coins to have to feed into the machine, odds are that you'll instead pay a store staff member and receive a single token to use instead, like with one Japanese airline's onboard gacha machines. The Kurand Sake Gacha Popup Store will be open from August 21 to September 29. And if you're after more tasty randomization, don't forget about the gacha cake shop elsewhere in Japan.
