Former US congressman George Santos reports to prison
The federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that the New York Republican was in custody on Friday at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, in southern New Jersey.
Santos pleaded guilty last summer to federal wire fraud and aggravated identity theft charges for deceiving donors and stealing people's identities in order to fund his congressional campaign.
His lawyer Joe Murray, when asked for comment on Friday, responded with a brief, all-caps text: "FREE GEORGE SANTOS."
The ever-online Santos, who turned 37 on Tuesday, hosted a farewell party for himself on X on Thursday night.

"Well, darlings … The curtain falls, the spotlight dims, and the rhinestones are packed," he wrote in a post afterwards.

Santos will serve his time in a minimum security camp at the all-male facility, which also includes a larger medium security prison, according to the Bureau of Prisons.
Santos was elected in 2022, flipping a wealthy district representing parts of Queens and Long Island for the GOP. But he served for less than a year and became just the sixth member of the House to be ousted by colleagues after it was revealed he had fabricated much of his life story.
During his winning campaign, Santos painted himself as a successful business owner who worked at prestigious Wall Street firms when, in reality, he was struggling financially.
He also falsely claimed to have been a volleyball star at a college he never attended and referred to himself as "a proud American Jew" before insisting he meant that he was "Jew-ish" because his Brazilian mother's family had a Jewish background.
The cascade of lies eventually led to congressional and criminal inquiries into how Santos funded his campaign and, ultimately, his political downfall.
Since his ouster from Congress, Santos has been making a living hosting a podcast called "Pants on Fire with George Santos" and hawking personalised video messages on Cameo.
He has also been holding out hope that his unwavering support for President Donald Trump might help him win a last-minute reprieve.
The White House said this week that it "will not comment on the existence or non-existence" of any clemency request.
In media appearances this month, the former lawmaker wasn't shy about sharing his morbid fears about life behind bars.
"I'm not trying to be overdramatic here. I'm just being honest with you. I look at this as practically a death sentence," Santos told Tucker Carlson during an interview.
"I'm not built for this."
On social media, his recent musings have sometimes taken a dark turn.
"I'm heading to prison, folks and I need you to hear this loud and clear: I'm not suicidal. I'm not depressed. I have no intentions of harming myself, and I will not willingly engage in any sexual activity while I'm in there," Santos said on X.
"If anything comes out suggesting otherwise, consider it a lie … full stop."

Though former Democratic Rep. Wiley Nickel of North Carolina announced a Senate run in April, numerous news reports indicate he is deciding whether to suspend his campaign. Democrats have had mixed success in North Carolina. The party last won a Senate election in North Carolina during the the 2008 cycle, when Kay Hagan defeated then-incumbent Republican Elizabeth Dole. That's also the last time a Democratic presidential nominee won the state when Barack Obama defeated John McCain en route to capturing the White House. Trump says he has not been asked to pardon Maxwell following Epstein interviews
US President Donald Trump has said he has not been asked to pardon disgraced British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell following her 'truthful' answers to government questions about sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Maxwell was found guilty in December 2021 of luring young girls to massage rooms for paedophile financier Epstein to molest between 1994 and 2004. The US Department of Justice met with the 63-year-old convicted sex-trafficker last week – interviews in which her lawyer David Markus said his client would 'testify truthfully'. The US government faced a backlash from Mr Trump's support base following words from Attorney General Pam Bondi that there was no evidence Epstein had a 'client list'. Following the criticisms, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche met with Maxwell over the course of two days – with Mr Blanche saying: 'No-one is above the law and no lead is off-limits.' Mr Markus previously said the disgraced socialite had not been offered a pardon as part of the interview process. In a short statement ahead of the meetings, the lawyer said: 'I can confirm that we are in discussions with the government and that Ghislaine will always testify truthfully. 'We are grateful to President Trump for his commitment to uncovering the truth in this case.' Questioned on whether he had been asked to pardon Maxwell, the US President told reporters on Monday: 'Well, I'm allowed to give her a pardon, but nobody's approached me with it. Nobody's asked me about it. 'It's in the news – that aspect of it – but right now, it would be inappropriate to talk about it.' During her three-week trial in 2021, jurors heard prosecutors describe Maxwell as 'dangerous', and were told details of how she helped entice vulnerable teenagers to Epstein's various properties for him to sexually abuse. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison at the federal court in the southern district of New York (SDNY) in June 2022. Epstein was found dead in his cell at a federal jail in Manhattan in August 2019 while he awaited trial on sex trafficking charges. The death was ruled a suicide.

Delta pilot arrested by federal agents who stormed the cockpit moments after landing in San Francisco
Passengers were left shocked as federal agents stormed the cockpit of Delta flight just moments after the plane landed in San Francisco. One of the plane's pilots was arrested on child porn charges by officers from multiple agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred on board Delta Flight 2809 around 9:35 p.m. local time on Saturday. The flight departed from Minneapolis earlier in the day. The landing was delayed due to heavy fog in the Bay Area. Fox News national correspondent Bill Melugin reported that the pilot was arrested on charges related to child sexual abuse materials. 'A group of people with badges, guns, and different agency vests/markings were pushing their way up through the aisle to the cockpit,' first class passenger Sarah Christianson told The San Francisco Chronicle. She also described the officers as having 'stormed the cockpit, cuffed the co-pilot, arrested him, walked him down the aisle, and ushered him off the plane through the cabin doors located between first and coach.' Christianson told the newspaper that the other pilot told the passengers that he was just as confused as everybody else about what was going on. She went on to describe the incident as 'shocking and unnerving.' Christianson said that she counted around ten officers involved in the arrest. In a separate interview, Christianson said that she was reduced to tears following the ordeal. 'It was scary. It was traumatic to watch. As soon as my husband picked me up from baggage claim, I jumped in the car and cried. Because who knows what's happening to that poor person? Why that happened? What did we just see?' she told ABC San Francisco. After the pilot was led away, officers remained on board, collecting his belongings. He had not been publicly identified. Video of the arrest was published by aviation blog A View From the Wing. Just last week, a Delta pilot was arrested in Sweden after allegedly failing a breathalyzer test, something the pilot and the airline have denied.
